@Dialektgefahr Du solltest dem #winboat Windows wenigstens 4GB zusichern. Besser wären 8. Aber ganz ehrlich, einfach ausprobieren. Die Installation dauert nicht lange und wenn es nicht passt, löschen und mit Windows 10 versuchen. Hostet ja nix, außer etwas Zeit 😆

Alle Software, Games, Features, die ich verwende, laufen stabil, knackig, schnell, ohne Darstellungsprobleme, einfachso. Der Rest - also nur #Affinity - läuft mit #Winboat

Ansonsten finde ich mich in #Linux #Mint überraschend gut zurecht. #WinBoat habe ich auch installiert, demnächst schaue ich mal, wie man das gestartet bekommt und benutzt. Bin sehr überrascht, wie schnell #linuxmint vom Test- zu einer Produktivumgebung im Haushalt geworden ist, und Windows nur noch für zwei Lexwareanwendungen benötigt wird. Auch der Umstieg von #Microsoft #Office zu #libreoffice klappte. Aufwändig aber erfolgreich war auch der Umstieg auf #Thunderbird. 2x

#piholeHoste meinen eigenen Mailserver wie auch alle oben genannten Services (excl Signal) selbst.
Dass ich ein Microsoft und Hoogle-Konto habe, ist meinem Arbeitgeber geschuldet... da müsste ich kündigen... nutze diese Services aber nur mit zugehaltener Nase und so selten wie möglich.
Windows 11 hab ich allerdings seit kurzem neu im Portfolio... für genau 2 Anwendungen für die Modellbahn, die ich mit wine nicht zum Funktionieren überreden konnte... und die der Hersteller ausschließlich für Win anbietet.
Aber es rennt mit #winboat im Container, der nur für diese beiden Anwendungen gestartet wird. -

Hace algún tiempo hablé por aquí de #WinBoat, que es un sistema de virtualización basado en Docker para ejecutar #Windows en #Linux.
Después de un tiempo probándolo, he de decir que va DE LUJO TOTAL. Parece hasta mentira lo bien que va. Solo lo he probado con Windows 10, que para lo que necesito tengo de sobra. Con 11 no sabría decir si va tan bien, habría que probarlo.
Es verdad que la instalación no es muy directa, hay que trastear un poco, pero bueno, bien vale la pena. -

I would recommend installing the Windows Office via https://www.winboat.app/
This will integrate in a linux Window very nicely and will give you access to the host filesystem. Just make sure to have an eye on Internet access, any successful Malware infection will have disk access as well.

@rwaschbaer Alle Komerziellen CADs sind Zicken auf Linux, Weder Solidworks noch AutoCAD habe ich mit Wine oder Proton zum Laufen gebracht.
Neuerdings gibt es ja #Winboat. Du könntest das mal auprobieren. -
Hier hat nicht zufällig schonmal jemand ArchiCAD produktiv(!) unter Linux zum Laufen gebracht? Wenn ich das richtig in Erinnerung hab, muss auch CodeMeter für die Lizensserver-Verbindung laufen.
Der Rechner auf dem das laufen muss bräuchte ansonsten eine neue CPU, damit Windows 11 zukünftig darauf läuft.
(Die neue CPU wäre vermutlich einmalig weniger Stress. Aber irgendwie sträubt sich alles in mir, perfekt funktionierende, vollkommen ausreichende Hardware zu ersetzen, damit da ein OS läuft, das ich eigentlich gar nicht in meinem Leben haben will.)

Gibt es eigentlich bei Linux sowas wie "Komplettsets", die einem den Umstieg möglichst leicht machen? Also Mint mit vorinstalliertem Winboat, oder sowas? Wahrscheinlich läuft das der Haltung "Linux" zuwider, aber ich denke das wäre schon praktisch, oder?

Saw a coworker use Winboat on linux instead of a windows virtual machine and it looks like quite a smooth integration! Running apps in the same window as other linux apps. If my internet wasn't so slow I'd like to give it a try right now (but you need to download win 11 ISO, which takes some time with my internet...).
Maybe this would fix certain issues virtual machines have, such as keyboard shortcuts in the VM. For some reason Virtualbox can't deal with SPACE+DRAG.

Is anyone using #winboat reliably? Now that it has podman support, I decided to give it an earnest try, and i have to say... Im not having much success. I got a guest up and running, and this morning I started working on getting one of those apps I really need windows for installed.... and the guest just disappeared, and wont start up now.

Aus der Steinzeit des PC (kurz nach Apple ][ und C64 erinnere ich mich an eine Diskussion an meinem Arbeitsplatz, ob denn nun Word Perfect oder Microsoft Word besser sei. Es gab nur wenige, echt Argumente. Im wesentlichen wurde immer das unterstützt, was man schon kannte. Jede Umstellung ist mit Aufwand (u.A. Installation, Training) verbunden.
Diesen Aufwand muss man gegen die Vorteile, die man bei Umstellung sieht, abwägen.
Für den Umstieg würde ich #Linux Mint Cinnamon empfehlen. Dieses Ubuntu-Derivat ist einfach zu installieren und in Look and Feel Windows-ähnlich.
Wenn man für bestimmte Software von Windows abhängig ist, ist #WinBoat (unter Linux Mint) meine Wahl.

This looks promising.
Most of my Linux machine have Windows OEM licenses still in their firmware anyway.
That should probably be better than Wine for trying to get WPF, WinUI, or Maui apps running.
And might maske Windows Rider development easier on a Linux box.

So, WinBoat (https://www.winboat.app/) AppImage genommen und mit Gear Lever (https://github.com/mijorus/gearlever) Updates managen lassen. FreeRDP3-Client ergänzt, alles andere sonst schon da.
Home Folder -Integration mal gelassen - hinterher geht das alles zu OneDrive :D
Kaffee machen und ne Stunde warten jetzt.

Okay, yeah. That's #Rhino3D version 5 (because I own a license for it) running apparently flawlessly on #Linux Mint, by way of #WinBoat - and it was close to effortless to set this up.
Rather than futzing around with Windows libraries and trying to run things more or less on bare metal like Wine does, WinBoat sets up a virtual machine with a whole-ass installation of Windows 10 or 11, and gives you a 'porthole' of sorts to individual applications as you run them. It's actually pretty elegant.

Acabo de probar #Winboat y me ha dejado maravillado. 😍
Es una alternativa muy buena para ejecutar #Windows sobre #Linux. Es bastante ligero (funciona sobre Docker) y tiene una interfaz con funciones muy chulas.
Inconveniente: Está en fase beta.

Frage zu WinBoat: Ich habe es nicht hin bekommen, die Grösse der VHD (data.img) nachträglich anzupassen. Die Anpassung der Env-Variable `DISK_SIZE` in `~/.winboat/docker-compose.yml` und ein anschliessender Neustart des WinBoat docker containers haben nicht geholfen.
Funktioniert hat das Löschen der VM und das Anpassen der Grösse beim erneuten Aufsetzen.
Hat jemand einen Tipp, wie es richtig gehen würde?

Today on my #homelab I finally managed to drop in the main and backup #pihole machines, two #wyze 3040. To do: #selfhosting nebula-sync. Though I don't see myself needing to sync configurations that often, honestly.
I've also had to once again tweak my rack placements for the back of the rack, where the switching and power delivery happens. Hopefully this is the last time I have to fiddle with that side of the rack so deeply, because it's a major pain (both figuratively and actually, thanks to my lower back pain...).
I've also gotten Debian running on a 2018 Mac Mini, which will also go in the rack as soon as I can get 15cm ethernet pigtails, because dear LORD they are a pain to make even with passthrough terminators...
Also ready to go in the rack is the W11 8th-gen NUC that will serve as the host for #winboat for the apps I might need.
Feeling like I've been trampled, so time for slowing down.
