Legit #Win11 hack! :red_exclamation_mark:
First, uninstall #copilot - blow it away 💥
Next, install #opencode and run that 🍻wsl:
curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/install | bashYou're very welcome! 🤗❤️

I keep thinking that the limitation on work-use computer being #Linux is documents. And I think I'm still right. US biomed sciences use #Word exclusively. Stats? Math? Bioinformatics? Maybe other things. Clinicians? It's Word.
Now even on #Win11 it's weird. Collaborator uses Mac version of office. I get the doc. I open it locally. Spaces missing in random places. I open it on Word online. Figures moved in weird places, but spaces back. None of it is consistent between OS and online period.

Over the weekend, I lent a hand at my local library as they assisted a few customers installing #linux onto their laptops that don't support #Win11 . One person I helped, got stuck while I was answering questions. Instead of waiting they took initiative and asked a big #LLM , and got an answer before I finished.
Later on I went about the process of looking up the same question manually, the way I usually do it, it took me about 15 minutes to find the answer.

@NanoRaptor Simple batch/bash scripts in the #win11 box and the #linux machines. Tested and verified. I checked the backups on both O/S. Nothing fancy and every month I run them to external drives and alternate. I keep three runs on each so I can go back six months. Eventually a third drive and then chat with the bank about a safe deposit box for an offsite backup.

I only administer my own stuff. It isn't a job. But that means working on the command-line a lot. I prefer vim.
My daily driver right now is #Win11. I was just editing a markdown file in Atom and literally wrote this:
"end of sentence.:wq"
Vim has escaped containment in my mind. Apparently and all text files should be saved that way. *shakes head*

I lean more and more toward switching to #Debian or #Ubuntu for my daily driver laptop. I just keep getting smacked with Word incompatibilities.
Re-reading a thesis for someone defending this week. It's a Word doc. I open it in #LibreOffice on #Win11. The images are all gone. Yes, the see images option in options is checked. They're all just invisible. Open the same doc in Word and it's fine.
There's no "open in Word" option on Linux. In #Academia, I find this to be biggest hurdle.

If you're using #Windows and a #VPN service in order to get some #privacy, you may probably re-think and switch to a modern #Linux instead.
If you need further incentive for that step:
#Microsoft does generate a unique "Global Device ID" #GDID. This is not the bad news as all/most systems do have those (Linux: "man machine-id").
The issue at hand is that Microsoft is transmitting that GDID with many network transmissions of yours and you can't prevent that from happening.
Using that ID, the FBI identified bad guys that were using VPN for their felonies.
While catching really bad guys is always a plus, it also proved that your privacy is ignored while #surveillance is maximized when your activities may always be tracked down to your unique Windows ID.

Microsoft admits Windows 11 has a GDID tracker with no off switch, first documented publicly in an FBI hacker complaint. Here’s how it works and how to limit it.

Finally found a solution to Win11 Notepad being shit. Notepad3 allows me to open two instances of the same file just by double clicking the file. Reading lyrics/chords on screen will be easy now.
It's such a simple thing and they managed to mess up how it used to work (with no setting to enable it). Not the only thing I've had to find workarounds for. Unfortunately I still need Win.
I also have Notepad++ but that's for CSS tweaks so it needs code markers.

Windows (10/11) Ignorance Question:
I need a .exe file that can run a couple of commands. Intent is for it to replace a program in the Startup list, so it can run a config command to fix some display wonkiness after startup. Does anything useful like that already exist for legit purposes? It's a bespoke modified locked down Win10 system being used as a controller with a weird display config.

"You paid me, a long-time #Linux user, to use #Windows 11 exclusively for a month: here’s how it went" by @thomholwerda

Win11 update purgatory
Last use/updated Win11 less than 2 weeks ago. Had to use it again to test some bespoke Win11 app. Took over an hour and many rebootes to update. It lost my login PIN and face recognition. Thankfully, my recovery email is self hosted on a Linux server and via Roundcube webmail on my Android phone and I was able to get a magic code to reset my Win11 pin and re-setup face ID. Thankfully, I don't use it for anything except some testing. Thanks to #Linux #win11 -
Nope. #VibeCoding isn't hurting #Win11 #windows at all.

I fired up my Lenovo Flex 5G yesterday and was pleasantly surprised that I was FINALLY able to update it from 23H2 to 25H2. Microsoft or Qualcomm fixed whatever driver issue was blocking/resulting in a BSOD. This #fanless Windows laptop still has some life!

One of my biggest pet peeves (Scroll back in my feed if you don't believe) is the capslock key - here's my #win11 solution:

"Microsoft updated its #Surface buying guide to describe 8GB #RAM as “great for everyday use like browsing, streaming, schoolwork, and productivity apps.” A companion FAQ adds that 16GB or more is what unlocks #Copilot+ PC features. No acknowledgment that, for two years, Microsoft was the loudest voice telling everyone that 16GB was non-negotiable for a good #Windows11 experience."
"What makes this infuriating is that #Microsoft is one of the biggest reasons why the RAM situation got so bad in the first place."
-

RE: https://mastodon.thenewoil.org/@thenewoil/116817828454639672
Microsoft is quietly "buying" time to keep it's users from switching to better, free and open operating systems and software applications.
