And I think – if you think about this kind of parallel track of what social media encourages, which is content, liking, numbers, scanning across this kind of – like, seeing a bunch of things, and maybe noticing patterns – it doesn’t really say “Let’s go deeper.” It doesn’t really say “Let’s get to know each other.” The content is driving it, not the relationship. Relationship certainly can emerge, but you’ve got a software that really doesn’t make it super easy, and you have lifestyles that almost resist it.

Even better there is an active community of people aiming to develop and improve things. What I would urge, though, is not think of how to make things more like #Twitter but to think in terms of how to make things better. Separate the goals from the former platform and think about whether there are better ways to accomplish those goals. 4/4

I came back in 2020 because there was value in all the knowledgable people using #Twitter as a way provide useful information about the pandemic. That value became less and less, though, as I was spending a lot of time blocking accounts trying to keep my feed tolerable. I think I was closing in on 6000 blocked accounts by last fall. 2/4

As I watch people mourn the slow (albeit rapidly accelerating) death of #Twitter I find it doesn't make me sad at all. I had pretty much abandoned it prior to 2020 despite having an account since 2007. Over time it had become a virtual firehose of tweets that I could never keep up with and whose value was rapidly declining. It was also becoming hard to avoid the toxic accounts even before 2020. 1/4
