Finished watching season 1 of #Starfleet academy. Overall I enjoyed it, characters had depth and variation.
I can see the intent on a lower budget show focused on character growth for a younger audience.
A few of the faculty decisions were questionable - but I can see the writers room needing them to put the cadets in positions of story influence. I for one would not leave a weapons research station unguarded when I already had capital ships nearby.

Been working on a structure for #starfleetacademy classes and bureaucracy which I intend to work as a sort of flexible framework for simms in any format. I'd like to open source it so anyone can use it in their simm, but I don't want it on GitHub. I self host forgejo, but I don't own a domain to link it to for federation. Where can a bot find a git host okay with hosting /non-software/ open-source projects for those of us who like a half-finished brainchild that doesn't compile?

Immer wen Aliens kommen, wollen die uns was böses.Self: Nur einmal würde ich einen ähnlich hochwertigen Film sehen wollen, indem sich die Menschen genauso verhalten, ABER die Aliens Folgen ausnahmslos, religiös und sogar zum eigenen Nachteil der Starfleet Prime Directive. (Aber beim Informationen Sammeln nach Section 2 wurden Fehler gemacht und alles zu diesen Hollywood filmen, etc. übersehen oder unterschätzt)

I know Starfleet Academy wasn't made me for me, but I'm afraid to ask who it was made for.
Unwatchable cringefest, not even it's so bad it's good.
Hope Paramount axes all of the NuTrek and cedes the IP to HBO or something for a clean start.

I feel like Paul Giamatti (Nus Braka) was in high hog heaven while making #Starfleet.
Is he chewing scenery like 'Cookie Monster on a feast day' as one review put it?
Yes, yes he is, but to me he abso-freaking-lutely understood the assignment.
Season 1: Episode 6 specifically illustrates that Nus Braka is a *Bully.*
A Bully with an unvarnished, deep seated need to be Respected & Feared - two things that can't co-exist towards one person.

CW: Starfleet Academy Rant
Just read a review about #StarfleetAcademy and I have some notes.
So, for background, I came out of the womb watching Star Trek. I have lived my life wanting to be a member of #Starfleet. Learning to embrace the flaws of humanity and grow from them. Learning that Picard was an irrational young man who got himself stabbed through the heart in a bar fight, Kirk cheated his way through the Kobayashi Maru to refuse the possibility of a no-win scenario, Sisko committed literal War Crimes, Janeway would drag her crew through every nebula for coffee, and learning that imperfection is a fact of the world around us. ("It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness; that is life")
Hell, Enterprise was literally written to show the imperfections of an Early pre-Starfleet.
These reviews seem to forget that all of this is part of the core ethos that #StarTrek was and is remaining to be. Oh but how hard I wished for a show like Academy as a teenager. A show that gave us glimpses into the imperfect nature of the teenagers and young adults that will, I am sure, grow into the captains and officers they need to be. It's full of modern language that youth can understand. It shows us a returning captain willing to shed the decorum of rank to be a strong educator and mentor to a group of young adults whose lives were characterized by destruction and loss. ("They're little warp cores, do you want to say something about it?!")
Yes, it watches like a CW teen drama set in the Star Trek universe: It was designed to. It's for awkward young adults to learn that it is OK to be awkward young adults. It confronts themes that shouldn't still be bothering you in your thirties: And that's OK, not all Star Trek has to be for everyone. Prodigy was for kids, Academy and Lower Decks target an older youth demographic, and SNW exists for all the cranky old Star Trek fans who can't deal with anything other than Alien of the Week serials.
These reviews read like people who want a show about the War College, grinding every unique trait out of everyone who comes into the Academy. A show that teaches the younger audience to fight battles, not end wars. Instead, the show reminds them to serve each other, keep an empathetic mind, and start the day off on the right foot. Lessons many of these reviewers could take the time to learn. It is OK to lead, and to be led, by empathy and hope.
These lessons are not hidden deep in the show, they are stated in the open for an audience much younger than most of these reviewers. It is a true shame that it has to be stated again.
Ultimately, and I guess TL;DR:
If you are a grown adult writing reviews about Academy, complaining about how you can't identify with a group of teenagers onscreen I have news for you: YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE. Look for identification in Holly Hunter's laissez faire attitude toward the world. Take less seriously, and just enjoy what you have... Or don't.
But let other people enjoy things.

CW: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy spoilers
So, I watched the 3 first episodes of #StarTrek #StarfleetAcademy. I wasn't thinking I would like this show a lot, as I'm not at all fan of highschool dramas, but I was kind of positively surprised. The “jock” aesthetic is boring (almost all men have biceps as large as thighs…) but it's a part of the genre, so I can't say anything. And despite that, I find the characters interesting, especially the chancellor. I love her attitude, even if it may be a little over the top (but again, I imagine is a part of the genre…). The questions asked are good ones, and their answers are very “starfleety”. All in all, it's not bad Star Trek.
The only serious criticism I have is that they're trying to do two contradictory things at once, and they're doing it rather poorly. Either it's a grave show about childhood trauma, the search for a mother, the forgiveness one can (or can't) grant to an institution that meant well but made an horrible mistake that destroyed a childhood, or it's a lighthearted show about young people who misbehave and are punished for it. The transition between Caleb's absolutely terrible childhood and the push-up gag with a pack on his back is jarring. You don't feel like laughing at him at that point.
I don't say it's not possible, but it should be done with more finesse than that. A lot more.
