OBS Studio Update Adds New Features, Drops 22.04 Support
For high-quality screen recording and streaming few apps comes close to the power and versatility as the cross-platform and open-source OBS Studio – and a new version is out. OBS Studio 31.0 intros a slate of new features and capabilities. Among them, the long-awaited addition of preview scrollbars, making it easier to move around previews without needing to hold the spacebar and click, and a zoom/scale indicator so users can tell when the viewpoint is zoomed/moved. Elsewhere, OBS Studio 31.0 adds a new background blur filter – but it only works on systems equipped with a compatible NVIDIA RTX GPU :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS Released with Linux Kernel 6.8
The fifth and final point release to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is now available to download. This update was due to be released a couple of weeks ago but was delayed by a delay in getting Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS out the door – something had to give, so the release date of this update slipped. But it’s here now, ready to download. Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS brings a freshly-spun installer image (ISO) that includes all of the software, security, and stability updates released since the last ISO was made. This cuts down on the number of updates that have to downloaded after :sys_more_orange:

Is there any working CVS GUI frontend for #linuxmint or #Ubuntu22_04Lts ?
tkcvs (wish) uses 100% cpu and tries to read something from a socket (error: EAGAIN). cervisia (from #kde_gear) does start but is unusable (error: the cvsservice is not reachable via d-bus) althoug cvsservice was installed as dependency. cvsservice is used to access remote CVS repositories.
It seems that both applications require a remote CVS repository but I just have a local one. Is there a work-around for this ? -
Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS is Available to Download
A new point release of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is available to download. Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS is the fourth point release and results in a brand-new installation image (ISO) that integrates all of the security patches, bug fixes, and software updates released since last August’s Ubuntu 22.04.3 image. Additionally, Ubuntu 22.04.4 ships atop a new hardware enablement stack (HWE) composed of Linux kernel 6.5 (bringing support for newer hardware, file system tweaks, and security updates) and Mesa 23.2.1 (offering improved graphics support). Ubuntu 22.04 Users Can Now Upgrade to Linux Kernel 6.5
You can now upgrade to Linux kernel 6.5 in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS — no PPAs, additional repos, or edge packages required. Ubuntu routinely back-ports newer Linux kernels from “interim” releases to its latest long-term support release. The Linux 6.5 kernel from Ubuntu 23.10, released back in October, is the latest version to get the treatment. Now, this major kernel update affects the standard hardware-enablement (HWE) kernel only. It will not replace the standard GA kernel Ubuntu 22.04 LTS originally came with. If you’ve chosen to stick with Linux 5.15 because it works best then don’t fret: it ain’t going away. :sys_more_orange:

New Emoji Land in Ubuntu
A brown mushroom, a slice of lime, and a fiery phoenix — no, that’s not the start of a rubbish joke but a handful of the newest emoji added to the Unicode standard. And if you’re using Ubuntu, you’ll be able see and use them well before iPhone users, too. Rolling out to users on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 23.10 is an update to the Noto Color Emoji font that includes support for the 118 new emoji in Unicode 15.1. As well as the aforementioned brown mushroom, lime, and firebird, it includes new nodding and head-shaking smileys, a broken link, :sys_more_orange:

Kubuntu 22.04 LTS Users Can Upgrade to KDE Plasma 5.27
KDE Plasma 5.27 is now available for users of Kubuntu 22.04 LTS to upgrade to — if they want to. Kubuntu 22.04 LTS ships with KDE Plasma 5.24. That’s a great release that works well for most but it lacks a few of the fancier flourishes and refinements found in more recent versions of the desktop. Now no-one need miss out. Developers working on the popular Ubuntu flavour have put in the effort to package KDE Plasma 5.27 into a backports-extra PPA. Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS Released with Updated Kernel, Graphics Drivers
Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS release has been made available to download. The 3rd point release in the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS series, this update rolls together all of the security patches, bug fixes, and software updates issued to the Jammy Jellyfish since the previous point release, into a shiny new ISO image. I.e. it’s a real time saver for those doing a fresh install. Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS also includes a new hardware enablement stack (HWE) composed of Linux kernel 6.2 and Mesa 23.0.4 (a sizeable update in itself). Package updates include GNOME Shell 42.9, LibreOffice 7.5.5 (an uplift over the the 7.3.x series), :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Users Can Now Upgrade to Linux Kernel 6.2
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS users can now upgrade to Linux kernel 6.2 using the Software Updater tool. Ahead of the formal Ubuntu 22.04.3 point release due next week (August 10) Canonical has issued an updated kernel to existing LTS existing users to install. It back-ports the Linux 6.2 kernel used in Ubuntu 23.04 “Lunar Lobster”. Typically, HWE updates roll out once the formal point release itself is made. This time the update has arrived earlier – which is great news for those already on the LTS as it means they can benefit from all the new features in Linux 6.2 without :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.04 Fixes Window Snapping Memory Bug
Users of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS who make use of window snapping to enhance their productivity will be interested in a bug fixes coming down the update pipes shortly. The Mutter 42.9 update currently in Jammy’s proposed repo contains a fix for high memory and lagginess when resizing side-by-side tiled windows. Given that Ubuntu 22.04 only supports vertical side-by-side window tiling — the upcoming Ubuntu 23.10 supports quarter tiling out-of-the-box — this is likely to be a bug that has affected many users. I was interested to see if this bug was reproducible on any of my 22.04 installs. I fired :sys_more_orange:

Here’s a quick tip for those of you looking for an easy way to see see remaining disk space in the file manager of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Once upon a time — like, really far back — the Nautilus file manager had a static status bar. This gave you an easy, at-a-glance way to see the amount of remaining disk space in whatever drive or folder you were viewing, at all times. Alas, this feature was lost to the sands of time (well, development priorities). Nautilus still comes with a status of sorts but it’s now a floating overlay that :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS users can now see a range of newer emoji in their favourite desktop apps, web browsers and command line clients. Nothing major, as Canonical’s Lukasz Zemczak explains in an e-mail to the Ubuntu developer mailing list, writing: “As there were some unexpected complications during the preparation of our HWE 5.19 kernels for jammy, and with shim 15.7 making its way to the archive, we decided that more time is necessary :sys_more_orange:

A Memory Quirk in Ubuntu 22.04 is Killing Apps too Frequently
If you’ve found memory management in Ubuntu a little too aggressive since upgrading to 22.04 LTS know this: you are not alone. A new discussion on the Ubuntu mailing list highlights issues scores of users are experiencing on the system. It all links back to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS’s introduction of systemd-oomd, a user-space out of memory killer that’s designed to “take corrective action before an OOM occurs in the kernel space’. When it detects that memory pressure is getting a bit too stressed, it intervenes to ensure the system copes, and (most) things stay running. Problem is, some folks are :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu already supports the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB and 8GB versions (and has done since the Ubuntu 20.10 release). Now the team building the distro plan to go further by supporting the Raspberry Pi 4 2GB model too (which costs around £40, if you’re considering one). However, making Ubuntu run decently on devices with modest amounts of memory is difficult. Enter zswap, Ubuntu’s ‘secret weapon’ in targeting low-memory Pis with the full-blown Ubuntu experience. Most Ubuntu systems come :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.04 Really Hopes You Like the Colour Orange…
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is going to be very orange. I didn’t want to write about this change quite so soon as a) it’s not finished or final and b) the code hasn’t landed in Ubuntu 22.04 daily builds yet. However, people have noticed and I don’t want to look like I’m behind 💁🏻♂️. So, you may remember that last cycle Ubuntu’s community-based design team were instructed to remove purple (aka aubergine) from the Yaru GTK theme (as it is being dropped from the Ubuntu colour palette). While the great ‘de-purpling’ task didn’t end up happening in time for Indri it :sys_more_orange:
