Wer auf Ubuntu 24.04 LTS »Noble Numbat« den HWE-Stack (Hardware Enablement für LTS-Systeme) nutzt, bekommt gerade ein verfrühtes Update spendiert: Canonical rollt den Linux-7.0-Kernel aus Ubuntu 26.04 LTS »Resolute Raccoon« vorzeitig auf Ubuntu 24.04 aus. Bislang lief der HWE-Zweig mit Kernel 6.17 aus dem inzwischen ausgelaufenen Ubuntu 25.10.

#GigaByte AERO X16 2WH (AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 w/ Radeon 890M + NVIDIA RTX 5070) has its HDMI port wired differently compared to my old #Lenovo IdeaPad 3 Gaming 15IHU6 (Intel i5-11300H/Iris Xe Graphics + NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile) which makes me understand why #HybridGraphics laptops have a fame as being complicated. Simply getting #LinuxMint #LiveUSB to boot I need to either download #HWE ISO (easy option), boot with nomodeset or temporarily set Switchable Graphics Device value as Discrete.

Ubuntu LTS Users Could Get Intel GPU Updates More Frequently
This week sees the (belated) release of Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, the first point release update in the noble series to deliver an updated hardware enablement (HWE) stack. Ubuntu’s HWE backports newer Linux kernel and Mesa GPU drivers to LTS users in an effort to ensure the latest LTS works well with the latest hardware. But it could soon include a lot more. This week, Canonical engineer Shane McKee put forward a proposal to expand Ubuntu HWE updates so they loop in a broader range of graphics driver packages for Intel hardware. —the entire point of the HWE, after all. Ubuntu 22.04 Users Can Now Upgrade to Linux Kernel 6.5
You can now upgrade to Linux kernel 6.5 in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS — no PPAs, additional repos, or edge packages required. Ubuntu routinely back-ports newer Linux kernels from “interim” releases to its latest long-term support release. The Linux 6.5 kernel from Ubuntu 23.10, released back in October, is the latest version to get the treatment. Now, this major kernel update affects the standard hardware-enablement (HWE) kernel only. It will not replace the standard GA kernel Ubuntu 22.04 LTS originally came with. If you’ve chosen to stick with Linux 5.15 because it works best then don’t fret: it ain’t going away. :sys_more_orange:

The Linux Mint project has released two new versions: Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 (LMDE 6) and Linux Mint 21.2 Edge. LMDE 6 is based on Debian 12 "Bookworm" and is designed to be more user-friendly for Mint users who may not be as technically skilled as Debian users. Linux Mint 21.2 Edge is based on Ubuntu 22.04 "Jammy Jellyish" and includes updated hardware enablement (HWE) support with a newer kernel. Both editions come with the Cinnamon desktop environment and offer a familiar Mint experience. Users can upgrade to the Edge edition without reinstalling by installing the updated HWE stack from Ubuntu's repositories.

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS users can now upgrade to Linux kernel 6.2 using the Software Updater tool. Ahead of the formal Ubuntu 22.04.3 point release due next week (August 10) Canonical has issued an updated kernel to existing LTS existing users to install. It back-ports the Linux 6.2 kernel used in Ubuntu 23.04 “Lunar Lobster”. Typically, HWE updates roll out once the formal point release itself is made. This time the update has arrived earlier – which is great news for those already on the LTS as it means they can benefit from all the new features in Linux 6.2 without :sys_more_orange:

Canonical Bringing Livepatch Support to HWE Kernels
Ubuntu Pro subscribers will be able to apply reboot-free updates to more Linux kernels from July. As spotted by our friends at Neowin, Canonical announced Livepatch support for Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernels starting this summer. The first HWE kernel being covered as part of this support extension is Linux 6.2, which will be backported from the Ubuntu 23.04 release and pushed out to users of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Livepatch is a feature only available on long-term support (LTS) versions of Ubuntu for users with an active Ubuntu Pro subscription. When enabled, Livepatch allows users to install kernel updates (on eligible :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS Will Arrive 2 Weeks Later Than Planned
The next point release in the Ubuntu 22.04 series will be released later than initially intended. Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS had been due for release on Thursday, February 9. However, the release has had to be delayed by two weeks, and will now arrive on Thursday, February 23. Why the delay? Nothing major, as Canonical’s Lukasz Zemczak explains in an e-mail to the Ubuntu developer mailing list, writing: “As there were some unexpected complications during the preparation of our HWE 5.19 kernels for jammy, and with shim 15.7 making its way to the archive, we decided that more time is necessary :sys_more_orange:
