  6. Lilbits: Pebble smartwatches, Linux 7.0, and the uncertain future for Lenovo Legion Go graphics drivers

If you’ve got a PC that works, there’s not that much reason to worry about getting frequent driver updates unless you want to plug in some currently unsupported hardware. But if you’ve got a gaming PC, then frequent driver updates can be pretty important, as NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel often tweak graphics drivers to add support for new games and improve performance for existing titles.

  11. Ugh, what's widely considered the best graphics card of all time, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti is seeing driver support end this month (along with several other models).

I've been using this card for 8 years and an RTX-3080 is not an upgrade compared to it. It's significantly faster than the RTX-3060 for non-raytraced games (like No Man's Sky, my game) and has 11GB of RAM, 3 GB more than the 3080.

    This is painful news.

I play latest No Man's Sky all Ultra settings at 2560x1600 and get avg around 75-85fps (ranging from 60 - 140 depending on the scenery).

    Painful news, indeed.

  16. Mesa 25.0 Released with Support for Vulkan 1.4 & OpenGL 4.6

A new version of the Mesa graphics library has been released. Mesa 25.0 features Vulkan 1.4 support, which the team bill as the ‘flashiest addition’ in this new development release as it spans Anv (Intel), Asahi (Apple), Lavapipe (software), NVK (NVIDIA), PanVK (Mali), RADV (AMD), and Turnip (Qualcomm). The OpenGL 4.6 API also sees implementation in Mesa 25.0 though the version reported will depend on the hardware driver in use since not all drivers support all features OpenGL 4.6 requires. AMD RDNA4 graphics sees initial support in the RadeonSI Gallium3D (OpenGL) and RADV (Vulkan) drivers is present, the former worked :sys_more_orange:

  21. Ubuntu LTS Users Could Get Intel GPU Updates More Frequently

This week sees the (belated) release of Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, the first point release update in the noble series to deliver an updated hardware enablement (HWE) stack. Ubuntu’s HWE backports newer Linux kernel and Mesa GPU drivers to LTS users in an effort to ensure the latest LTS works well with the latest hardware. But it could soon include a lot more. This week, Canonical engineer Shane McKee put forward a proposal to expand Ubuntu HWE updates so they loop in a broader range of graphics driver packages for Intel hardware. —the entire point of the HWE, after all. 26. Canonical and Intel Announce New GPU Drivers Preview

Canonical and Intel have announced they’re making it easier for Ubuntu users to get cutting-edge drivers for Intel’s newest discrete GPUs. The effort brings “ray tracing and improved machine learning performance” for Intel Arc B580 and B570 “Battlemage” discrete GPUs to users on Ubuntu 24.10, building on that releases’ preexisting support for Intel Core Ultra Xe2 iGPUs. “For the past decade, Ubuntu has been one of the first distributions to enable the latest Intel architectures. 36. NVIDIA Linux Driver Now Supports Night Light Feature in GNOME

NVIDIA has released a new driver for Linux that adds support for the Night Light feature in GNOME. Night Light is a feature that reduces the amount of blue light emitted from your display, which can (studies show) help to improve sleep quality, and reduce eye fatigue. It’s available out-of-the-box in all Linux distributions which use GNOME (including Ubuntu), and accessed from the Settings app. The Linux x64 NVIDIA Display Driver 545.29.02 release notes mention various Wayland-related improvements (and much needed they are too, from what I hear) including support for virtual reality displays, support for running in XWayland, and a :sys_more_orange:
