Ubuntu 24.10 Default Wallpaper Revealed
The default wallpaper of Ubuntu 24.10 ‘Oracular Oriole’ (and the official release mascot artwork) has been unveiled. A visit to the local temple mystic wasn’t required to predict that an oriole would take centre-stage in the Ubuntu 24.10 wallpaper. Animal mascots are a recurring feature of Ubuntu’s default background since Ubuntu 17.10 ‘Artful Aardvark’. So it is – a geometric oriole bird motif sits ensconced within circles, with moons and other arcane symbols (echoing the ‘oracular’ element) surrounding it: It’ll sound twee and a tad pretentious, but I kind of see the circular aspect as a nod to the community :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 23.10’s New Development Wallpaper (Sunglasses Advised)
A new temporary wallpaper is being introduced in Ubuntu 23.10 “Mantic Minotaur”, which is currently under active development. The aim of the background is to make it “more obvious when testing the mantic daily that it is not lunar anymore”. There’s precedent for this; Ubuntu 23.04 included AI-generate lobster artwork for the bulk of its daily builds. It visual signpost doesn’t just remind developers and enthusiasts which release they’re working on/testing but makes those watching early-bird Ubuntu 23.10 reviews on YouTube etc aware that what they’re seeing is not the final, finished product. Anyway, here’s how Ubuntu 23.10 daily builds :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.10’s New Wallpaper is an Absolute Knock-Out
Ubuntu 22.10’s default wallpaper has been revealed. The new background image will grace the desktop of users who install or upgrade to Ubuntu 22.10 in October. Per tradition, all new versions of Ubuntu come with a custom-designed background image that carries a carefully-rendered character based on the codename mascot, which in this case is an African kudu. But in a break with the past, the mascot depicted in this drape has not been drawn using rigid geometry or bisecting circles, as previous ones have (to get effect, I should add). Instead, the leaping Kudu in the new wallpaper is a :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 21.10 Default Wallpaper Revealed
Ubuntu 21.10’s new default wallpaper has been revealed. As expected, the new background doesn’t deviate from the recent trend of sporting a large animal mascot atop a purple and orange backdrop. But unlike unlike most of the recent mascot wallpapers produced this one is not designed using an angular origami style, nor is it composed entirely of circles (Bionic Beaver, Cosmic Cuttlefish, Hirsute Hippo). As well as a new default wallpaper, Ubuntu 21.10 will include the two winners from the recent Ubuntu 21.10 wallpaper contest. Ubuntu 21.10 is due for release in mid October. A beta release is expected next :sys_more_orange:
