  1. Pathogen host-jumps pose major risks to health, but how can we predict them? This study shows that #pathogen novelty, rather than #spillover rate, is a stronger predictor of host-jump risk, so we should monitor emerging pathogens with limited spillover histories @PLOSBiology plos.io/4ss5WCY

"We stand together to strongly condemn conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin."

  3. Newfound #bat #virus that uses notorious #receptor poses ‘#spillover#risk, nature.com/articles/d41586-025

The virus is related to the #pathogen that causes #MERS and capitalizes on the same ‘entry receptor’ used by #SARS-CoV-2.

  4. {#USA, #Nevada} The Occurrence of Another Highly Pathogenic Avian #Influenza (HPAI) #Spillover from Wild #Birds into Dairy #Cattle, etidiohnew.blogspot.com/2025/0

Analysis of hemagglutinin gene of Nevada dairy cattle viruses did not identify changes predicted to impact #infectivity or #adaptation to mammalian hosts. However, a change of #PB2 D701N commonly associated with mammalian adaptation of HPAI virus was identified in viruses sequenced from four separate dairy cattle.

  9. Farmed #fur #animals harbour #viruses with #zoonotic #spillover potential, Nature: nature.com/articles/s41586-024

We identified 7 species of #coronaviruses, expanding their known host range, & documented cross-species transmission of a novel #canine respiratory coronavirus to raccoon dogs & of #bat HKU5-like CoV to #mink, present at a high abundance in lung tissues. 3 subtypes of #influenza A virus—#H1N2, #H5N6 & #H6N2—were detected in #lungs of guinea pig, mink and #muskrat, respectively.

  10. #Epidemiological #inference at threshold of #data availability: an #influenza #H1N2v #spillover event in #UK, J Roy Soc Interf.: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

From limited data available, we generate historical estimates of probability that #outbreak had died out in days following detection of the 1rst case. Our method suggests that outbreak could have been said to be over with 95% certainty between 19 & 29 days after 1rst case was detected, depending upon probability of a case being detected.

  11. #Spillover of highly pathogenic avian #influenza #H5N1 virus to dairy #cattle, Nature: nature.com/articles/s41586-024

Whole viral genome #sequences recovered from dairy #cows, #birds, domestic #cats, and a #raccoon from affected farms indicated multidirectional #interspecies #transmissions. Epidemiologic and genomic data revealed efficient cow-to-cow transmission after apparently healthy cows from an affected farm were transported to a premise in a different state.

  12. Multiple #transatlantic #incursions of #HPAI clade 2.3.4.4b A(#H5N5) virus into North #America and #spillover to #mammals, Cell Rep.: cell.com/cell-reports/fulltext

#Seabirds likely enabled multiple incursions of A(H5N5) virus from #Europe to #Canada. Some A(H5N5) viruses possessed the mammalian #adaptation #marker #PB2-E627K. A(H5N5) viruses demonstrated rapid 100% #mortality and some transmission in #ferrets. A(H5N5) viruses preferred avian virus receptors and are sensitive to NA #inhibitors.

  13. #Outbreaks of #H5N1 High Pathogenicity Avian #Influenza in #SouthAfrica in 2023 Were Caused by Two Distinct Sub-#Genotypes of Clade 2.3.4.4b Viruses, Viruses: mdpi.com/1999-4915/16/6/896

South African clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses had comparatively fewer #markers of #virulence and #pathogenicity compared to European strains, a possible reason why no #spillover to #mammals has occurred here yet.

  14. From #birds to #mammals: #spillover of highly pathogenic avian #influenza #H5N1 virus to dairy #cattle led to efficient intra- and #interspecies #transmission biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/

These results demonstrate the transmission of HPAI H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b virus at a non-traditional interface and to a new and highly relevant livestock species, underscoring the ability of the virus to cross species barriers.

  15. #Molecular #basis of #hippopotamus #ACE2 binding to #SARS-CoV-2, J Virol.: doi.org/10.1128/jvi.00451-24

These results provide crucial molecular insights into the susceptibility of hippopotami to SARS-CoV-2 and suggest the potential risk of SARS-CoV-2 VOCs #spillover and the necessity for #surveillance.

  16. Protect where bats forage
    Protect where bats roost
Include primary pandemic prevention alongside preparedness and response.

"While biomedical approaches are an essential part of the pandemic response toolbox, the genesis of a pandemic is rooted in ecological systems, necessitating ecological approaches for prevention."

"To reduce the likelihood of pandemics, we must protect where animals forage and rest so that we can keep wildlife healthy, minimize allostatic load, reduce the need for animals to alter their spatial behavior, and minimize risky human-wildlife encounters."

  25. "Specifically, the researchers found that clusters of #Hendra virus spillovers occur following years in which the bats experience food stress. And these food shortages typically follow years with a strong El Niño, a climatic phenomenon in the tropical Pacific Ocean that is often associated with drought along eastern Australia. But if the trees the bats rely on for food during the winter have a large flowering event the year after there’s been a food shortage, there are no spillovers. Unfortunately, the problem is “there’s hardly any winter habitat left,” says Raina Plowright, a disease ecologist and study co-author at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York."

  26. #introduction
Hi all. I'm just starting to explore mastadon. I'm a #diseaseecologist who studies #zoonotic #viruses in wildlife and how they #spillover into livestock and people. I work for a science-based nonprofit called EcoHealth Alliance. My research focuses on #bats and their associated #henipaviruses, #coronaviruses and #filoviruses in Asia and Africa.
