The #host #tropism of current #zoonotic #H7N9 viruses depends mainly on an acid-labile #hemagglutinin with a single amino acid #mutation in the #stalk region
Source: PLoS Pathogens, AbstractThe incidence of human infection by zoonotic avian influenza viruses, especially H5N1 and H7N9 viruses, has increased. Current zoonotic H7N9 avian influenza viruses (identified since 2013) emerged during reassortment of viruses belonging to different subtypes. Despite analyses of…

Enhanced Diversifying #Selection on #Polymerase Genes in #H5N1 Clade 2.3.4.4b: A Key Driver of Altered #Species #Tropism and #Host Range Expansion, BioRxIV: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.08.19.606826v1?rss=1
the polymerase genes #PB2, #PB1, and #PA exhibit significantly greater selection pressures in clade 2.3.4.4b than in all the earlier H5N1 virus clades. Polymerases play critical roles in influenza virus adaptation, including viral fitness, interspecies transmission, and virulence.

In #turkeys, unlike #chickens, non-structural #NS1 #protein does not play a significant role in #replication and tissue #tropism of the #H7N1 avian #influenza virus, Virulence: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/21505594.2024.2379371
These results suggest that NS1 does not play a role in the virulence or replication of HPAIV H7N1 in turkeys and further indicate that #genetic determinants of HPAIV differ in these two closely related galliform species.

#Evolution of #nasal and #olfactory #infection characteristics of #SARS-CoV-2 #variants https://www.jci.org/articles/view/174439 J Clin Invest.
Together, our study characterized the nasal #tropism of SARS-CoV-2 strains, immune #clearance, and #regeneration after infection. The shifting characteristics of viral infection at the #airway #portal provide insight into the variability of COVID-19 clinical features, particularly long COVID, and may suggest differing strategies for early local intervention.
