My favorite thing about the #ducklings has been their surprising intelligence and comprehension as they grow,

I don't use food bribes for my #waterfowl so everything they say to me or listen to me is of their own accord and interest .

Little sesame was ready to go outside this morning! She says 'QUANCK QUANCK' when she sees we got up for the day

So I tell her, 'sesame! Wait, wait short'
And she goes silent,,, like she has a #snooze alarm! Such a bright&polite #duck

I promise #birds ,,I am working on the #diy filter so their pool will stay clean

The best thing a #duck can have is #freshwater !!!

When you can’t think of anything else to talk about, bring up the weather. Today’s report says we’re in for six days of hot temperatures, but when I look at the extended forecast, I see nothing but heat all the way to the end — at least ten days. My guess is it’ll last straight through the summer. It always does.

These days we have air‑conditioning, so when it gets hot we just stay inside as much as possible. But sixty years ago, when AC wasn’t common, people spent more time outdoors simply because it was cooler out there than inside. At least in the South. Here in Louisiana, where the heat comes with a side of humidity, working outside can feel like you’re slowly melting.

Lately I’ve been living in gym shorts and a T‑shirt unless I’m doing yard work or heading out somewhere. If I’m leaving the house, I get all duded up and presentable.

Okay, I really don’t have much this morning, so I’m going to cut this short. Have a wonderful day.

Merganser Air Dance

Here’s an image of a pair of hooded mergansers (Lophodytes cucullatus) that I photographed years ago. It was an overcast day, the birds were far off, and my gear wasn’t nearly the quality of what I use now. The original file had quite a bit of noise, but after smoothing it out, the image took on a painterly quality that I find really appealing.

Rain on the roof this morning, steady enough that the forecast might as well just say don’t bother with outside today. So I’ll stay in and work indoors. Maybe I’ll finally clean the family‑room floor — the job that requires moving half the furniture and pretending I’m still twenty. I noticed on Saturday, during my exercise session, that the view from ground level reveals a whole ecosystem under there. Maybe we need a household staff. Or maybe I just need a nap. Rainy days are built for naps, and I’m already feeling the pull. No doubt I’ll manage both before the day is over.

When I first started driving, I had a 1954 Chevy station wagon. I’d cruise around town — not that the town was big enough to require cruising — but that’s what we did. There was a little mom‑and‑pop store near a streetlight, and for reasons lost to time, that was the local hangout. Teenagers gathered there like something might happen if we stared at the pavement long enough.

Me and my sidekick would roll by in the ’54, signaling our coolness with a snappy peace sign. Peace, man. Groovy. Out of sight. We had our own lingo and a Jets‑vs‑Sharks attitude, though in truth we weren’t about anything except mild mischief and trying to impress girls. As if a 1954 Chevy wagon was all it took for them to chase us down. They never did.

That era ended abruptly when a woman, late getting her son to a birthday party, tried to pass me while I was making a left turn. Totaled the car. I can still hear her kid crying in the back seat: “This always happens when you’re taking me to a party.” A perfect little soundtrack to the end of my first car and the end of that particular brand of teenage cool.
