19th century Europeans popularized the notion that pentagrams mean something "different" based on how they are drawn, and that this difference is somehow “ethical” in nature. They insisted that one-point-up pentagrams are “upright,” representing “goodness and light,” while two-point-up pentagrams are “inverted,” representing “darkness and evil.”
The so-called “inverted” pentagram with a goat’s head goes back to the French occultist Stanislas de Guaita in 1897, and it was later adopted by Anton LaVey as the Sigil of Baphomet in 1966. This has led people to assume that any pentagram with two points up is “satanic,” which actually isn’t true by a long shot.
This symbol is held sacred and drawn differently in many traditions, and it means something unique to each one. Within the LV-426 Tradition of Setianism, we do not consider the two-point-up pentagram to be “inverted” at all. We consider it to be exactly the way it should be: right-side up. Whenever we see a pentagram displayed with only one point up, it actually looks "upside down" to us! But that’s OK, we just chalk the difference up to personal preference. Setianism is often linked with something Western occultists call “the left-hand path" or "LHP."
This term originates from Hindu and Buddhist Tantra, in which the Vama Marga or “left-handed way” to enlightenment involves practices that most orthodox believers find “repugnant” (e.g., erotic mysticism).
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Western occultists appropriated this term from Tantra and used it as a synonym for "black magic" and "devil worship." Even Aleister Crowley was quick to demonize other occultists he didn't like as "brothers of the left-hand path" (though he himself was also characterized as such by his own critics, too).
The "LHP" did not actually become a positive self-label in the West until Kenneth Grant, Anton LaVey, and Michael Aquino came along. They each defined the concept in radically different ways. Since the 1970s, many other LHP traditions have developed, with such notable recurring themes as autotheism (the worship of oneself); an indiscriminate affinity for so-called “dark” forces (like conflating Set with His enemy, the isfet serpent); an intersection of Gnosticism, hedonism, nihilism, and/or anti-cosmicism; and some rather unfortunate dispositions toward right-wing sociopolitical ideologies (from American Libertarianism to outright National Socialism).
Though some Setians identify as “left-hand path,” not all of us do. Until more recent years, you had to really immerse yourself in the LHP subculture if you wanted to meet anyone else who might be sympathetic to Set. But in more recent years, we are seeing a definite increase in Setians among the Kemetic devotionalist community, and I am seeing fewer and fewer references to a "left-hand path" in Setian literature and art - which makes my heart glad.
My issue here is not necessarily with LHP philosophy or beliefs in and of themselves (though I certainly take issue with some of the more right-wing influences and activities I have seen). Rather, my issue is with the idea some people have that you "can't really be a Setian" without Crowley's Book of the Law, LaVey's Satanic Bible, Aquino's Book of Coming Forth by Night, or some other Thelemic, Satanic, or Western occult literature or dogma.
Let me say this loud enough for everyone in the back to hear:
THERE IS ONLY ONE THING ANYONE NEEDS TO BE A SETIAN, AND THAT IS SET.
Of course, Setians are always welcome to share additional interests. There is nothing to say you can't consider the Book of the Law or the Satanic Bible to be sacred, if that is truly how you personally feel. But the point is that Set was there long before Vama Marga, Typhonian Thelema, LaVeyan Satanism, the Temple of Set, or any other LHP variant, and a person doesn’t need EITHER of those things to know Him or walk with Him. To claim otherwise is to ignore the fact that Setianism began over five millennia ago as a North African animist and polytheist tradition in which our Namesake was clearly revered and venerated (as He deserves to be).
None of this is intended to dissuade anyone from identifying as "LHP" if they choose to do so (though I would encourage everyone to at least consider the colonialist history of this term, if nothing else). My point is just that nobody HAS to do this in order to be a Setian, because there were Setians long before the LHP subculture ever came into existence.

The Ungod is a hideous monster of isfet (the absence of Ma'at) from beyond time and space. It has only one single-minded goal: the total discreation of all things, including all Gods, all universes, and even itself in the end. In "His Nocturnal Majesty" and "Our Lady of Thrones," it appears as a giant mouth in the sky, causing most who see it to go mad with fear. Every villain in my entire fictional multiverse is secretly under the Ungod's influence; but most believe themselves to be serving either "God," "Satan," "humanity," "nature," or even just their own fragile egos. This is just how the Ungod likes it.
Under normal cirumstances, it is impossible for the Ungod to attack our shared multiverse directly. This is because the multiverse is built upon Ma'at, the truth and justice of the Gods, which is poisonous to all monsters of isfet. The Gods work together to uphold Ma'at at Their higher level of existence, preventing the Ungod from devouring everything all at once. But human beings are responsible for upholding Ma'at here at the terrestrial level; and if too many people work isfet instead, reality will fall apart and the Ungod can physically slither into our world through the cracks.
If this happens (as it does in "His Nocturnal Majesty" and "Our Lady of Thrones"), the Gods cannot simply reach in and save us. Human beings will have to do something here on our end before the Gods can step in. We will have to repair and rebuild Ma'at within ourselves and between each other. We will have to work some powerful magic to win the soul of humanity back. Hence why the Knights in Sutekh's Service must conduct a synchronized ritual together to exorcise the Ungod. Once there is finally enough Ma'at for such a team effort to be successfully coordinated, Set Himself reaches through the cracks in our universe, grabs the Ungod by its cyclopean throat, and drags it kicking and screaming back to the Other Side.

I can’t claim to be absolutely 100% certain that Set (or any other deity) is really a sentient entity that actually hears my prayers, or that has ever directly intervened in my life to change it for the better. But apart from my personal belief that these things are true, I can at least be certain that if I had never uttered a single prayer to Set, I would never have met some of my closest loved ones; I would not have the family I now cherish; I would not have developed my current career; and I would never have hoisted myself from the domestic situation in which I was raised. None of this proves that Set is objectively real by any means, but it does prove that His influence in my life is strong enough for it not to matter whether He is or isn’t. And to this extent at least, He and the other divinities I’ve encountered are all quite real enough for my purposes. Whatever the Gods actually are or however They are to be explained, They are certainly effective, just as magic can be effective whether it is truly “paranormal” or not.

I believe in many Gods and Goddesses; I am especially drawn to the ancient Egyptian pantheon; and I am specifically devoted to a God named Set. I also pray and make offerings to Set according to a unique religious tradition that some of my best friends and I developed together while we were growing up.
“Who or what is Set?”
Set is the Egyptian God of storms, deserts, and the nighttime world. His name is sometimes rendered as Seth, Setekh, Setesh, Sutekh, or even Suti, and He is also called Typhon in Greek (though He is not theologically identical to the Hellenic Titan who is also known by this name).
“Isn’t Set just the Egyptian version of Satan?”
No. Set is not a devil who rebels against His Creator; He is the Creator’s personal bodyguard, ritually defending Atum-Ra and all the rest of us from an ever-present apocalyptic threat. So while Set might seem dark and spooky, He is truly a force for good and not evil.
“It kinda looks like you worship the devil, though.”
That’s because “satanic” imagery was appropriated from various polytheist Gods, including (but not limited to) Set. This was historically done to demonize said Gods and the religions that follow Them. If it bothers anyone that my God reminds them of their “devil,” it really says more about them and their religion than it does about me or my faith.
“What about Osiris? Isn’t Set the bad guy in that story?”
Theologically speaking, Osiris can’t rise from the dead and create a happy afterlife for all good-hearted people unless He dies first; and it is part of Set’s job to make sure this happens. This is not a story of “good versus evil,” but of agricultural cycles, changes in ecosystems, the hope for better experiences after painful life transitions, etc. It is also not uncommon for Set and Osiris to be honored together at the very same shrines.
“The ancient Egyptians believed in magic; do you?”
The ancient Egyptians believed in heka or “divine speech,” which really means something more like “prayer” in general, and which potentially includes a wide variety of religious expression (discussed further below). While heka does attempt to influence events in Nature and/or human society by means we might assume to be “supernatural,” the exact same thing is true of prayer in all religions. So the way I see it, my practices are neither more nor less “magical” than those of any other faith.

I like to pray, which I define as any heartfelt communication with a God or deceased loved one (even if the purpose is just to express anger or despair, rather than praise or worship). I enjoy making offerings, which can include sharing meals, creating art (like paintings, sculptures, music, pottery, etc.), or even just dedicating a good deed to the Gods and/or the dead (like feeding stray cats for Bast or Sekhmet).
Many of my personal offerings to Set (and to other Gods and Goddesses) are available for the general public to enjoy as well. These include my entire discography, my podcast, my art, etc.
“What holidays do you celebrate?”
I really observe just one Egyptian holiday: Wep Ronpet (“Opening of the Year”), the New Year festival, which occurs in early- to mid-August during the annual inundation of the Nile. It’s technically a “roaming” holiday that falls on a slightly different date each year, but I prefer to celebrate on August 15 since this coincides with the date of my original conversion experience in 1997. The other holidays I traditionally observe are not Egyptian in origin; these include Hallowtide (October 31 through November 2), Walpurgis Night (April 30), and Friday the Thirteenth.
“Are you a member of the Temple of Set?”
No. I am well aware of the Temple of Set, but I have never been involved with that particular organization, and I respectfully do not subscribe to their ideology. Nor does anyone need to join that organization to know or walk with Set.
“Isn’t Setianism a ‘left-hand path’ (LHP) religion?”
Some Setians identify with this term, but I do not. Some would argue I am “right-hand path” (RHP) because of the devotional emphasis in my faith; but I don’t identify by this term either. Nor do I try to collapse every possible variety of religious experience into some false “LHP/RHP” binary. Setianism existed long before anyone ever used such terminology—which means “LHP” beliefs are supplementary to believing in Set, not fundamental.

Here's an attempt at explaining my whys and wherefores for the "Seven Gates of Set":
One issue I have always taken with Hermetic Qabalah is the way in which it purports to “blend” Jewish mysticism, alchemy, Western astrology, and certain polytheistic religions. There is nothing wrong with blending different religious traditions together, of course; but Qabalists often brand themselves as representing “the original Qabalah,” which is absolutely false. True Kabbalah is not a “free-for-all,” but an intricate cosmology that is entirely unique to Judaism. It is also a closed practice that requires studying the Torah inside and out. Hermetic Qabalah is simply a “Gentile” appropriation of this tradition that really has nothing to do with Judaism or the Torah, or with any of the polytheist gods that are commonly mentioned in Qabalic literature.
For example, Kenneth Grant insisted that Set is linked to Daath, the so-called “eleventh” sephira on the Tree of Life. Other writers have linked Set with Geburah, the sphere of divine judgment and wrath. These associations might appear to make sense on the surface, but I think many Jews and Setians would likely agree they are oversimplifications. Set is far more than just an “emotive attribute” of some monotheist god; He deserves to be understood on His own terms, not in Kabbalic (or Qabalic) terms.
Set is not just the destructive “murderer of Osiris” that Hermetic Qabalists like to pigeonhole Him as being. He is also the Son of Nut, the Savior of Ra, the Friend of the Dead, and an ambassador for the Netjeru to other pantheons. Yes, He can certainly hinder and destroy; but He can also help and protect, as evidenced by His own religious following in ancient times. He can become wrathful and go on the warpath, as He does with Osiris and Horus; but He can also be loving and romantic, as He is with each of His various partners (of both sexes). Hermetic Qabalah is ill-equipped to comprehend or explain such a multifaceted polytheist divinity, since it is predicated on monotheism in the first place.
By the same token, SETIANS—people who revere and emulate Set—are not the “black magicians” or “devil worshipers” of Egyptian polytheism. Most of us are regular people just like everyone else in every other religion on earth. We work jobs, we pay our bills, we take care of our families. We value safety and consistency, we become upset when things go topsy-turvy, and many of us work as educators or caregivers as well. So there is quite a bit more to Setians than whatever Hermetic Qabalists might think about us.
I decided to develop a new way of explaining the Setian “wavelength” with numbers and correspondences that does NOT appropriate anything from either Jewish Kabbalah or Hermetic Qabalah. This meant doing away with the “Tree of Life” and using an entirely different visual model as my starting point. And it seemed to me that there is no better visual model for capturing the Setian experience than the Big Dipper, which the ancient Egyptians called Khepesh or “the Thigh of Set.”
I first learned about Set’s connection to the Big Dipper from reading The Gates of the Necronomicon by “Simon” (who is most likely Peter Levenda writing under a pseudonym). The book recklessly equates Egyptian ideas with bits and pieces of Kabbalah, Daoism, and a “Lovecraftianized” version of pseudo-Sumerian mythology (which actually owes more to August Derleth than to H.P. Lovecraft). Yet the parts about Set being associated with the Dipper are factual at least, and I liked the idea that these particular stars might correspond with certain “astral gateways.” “Simon” claims to be sharing information from a real Sumerian “grimoire” that doesn’t actually exist; so it’s important to understand I am not referring to his work as a credible resource here. Rather, his suggestions inspired me to think about how the stars in the Big Dipper might each relate to Set without needing to appropriate anything from any non-Kemetic or non-Egyptian mystical traditions. I sensed that each of these stars corresponds with a different aspect of Set, a different phase in His myth cycle, a different animal from His divine iconography, and even a different aspect of what it is like to be a Setian.
Please note that this is not a “re-invention” of Kabbalah; nor is it an “initiatory curriculum” that must be followed in sequential order. The numbers I have assigned to each star are simply for convenience. Assuming I am not completely crackers for thinking of the Big Dipper as a series of “Setian gateways” in the first place, I imagine these gates as being “open” all at the same time, with Set reaching down to us and us reaching up to Him through each of them all at once.
