Let’s discuss immortals for this one. We already know how communication worked for mortals (AKA humans) during the tail end of the Victorian era. Telepathy might be used (if a vampire has the gift) or perhaps notes will be sent via ravens. If anything, it’s made life easier for immortals. Things were much harder for the mortals during this era, of course.

Well here's the canon description of what people smell when they get close to Medb.
"He paused mid thought as his nose brought to attention the scent of ravens or crows, and several wolves in the room. There was clearly only himself and her in the room."
There's clues that aren't hidden, but I don't know if I'll outright explain this phenomenon.
If we're talking about a designer candle or perfume, it'd be a blend of hewed pine or birch, and earthy—planty smell like stawberry plants (not the fruit)

Antagonists: Let's start with Duncan. He would smell like a deep, woodsy cologne. (When he's freshly bathed, that is.) Isma would no doubt smell like freshly turned earth or dirt. Like Death itself. That's quite a signature scent.

Alistair would be the historically inclined tour guide, bringing us to all of the areas where he's seen many, many things take place in the past. He would share stories, ask opinions, etc. He also knows every good bookshop, home library (of friends), and place where antiques are sold.
Hati would be the fun tour guide. She would bring us to the places where the locals visit. She knows every hole-in-the-wall area, excellent eatery, and exciting pub (with good folks who frequent, not the arseholes).
All in all, I would just *have* take a tour with both of them for the full experience.

#EroticMusings 62 — Do power imbalances exist within the romantic or sexual relationships between your characters? Is this a challenge for you? Does it present unique opportunities?
I would actually go so far as to say that between Alistair and Fenella, things are pretty even and equal. They're capable of the same things. They're both immortals. With that being said, however, let's touch on other stories of mine. I've written many a tale with PAs (personal assistants) and their bosses falling in love. Those are tougher to tackle because there's definitely a power imbalance involved. It needs to be handled delicately. I've usually always written the PA making the first move, not the boss. That way it doesn't seem like the PA character is being taken advantage of, if you catch my drift. But yes, it definitely presents unique opportunities for the storylines we write with situations like that.

Rare and valuable? Trust, or perhaps compassion. For an actual item, however, let’s go with a typewriter. Alistair is an author, an owner of one, and they were both extremely rare (and a fairly new invention) and incredibly valuable.
Common and essential? Multi-layered clothing for warmth, of course. People wore up to five layers of clothing year-round for warmth in poorly heated homes, with women wearing structured corsets and men relying on waistcoats and hats.

Before now, the knowledge that the clan, him, and his brother had pledged themselves to had cultivated new strains of the parasite for other purposes was abstract. Something known but not real, not tangible. Now the knowledge was material, the proof sleeping behind him on the other side of several inches of steel and wires.
A dolorous decay set into memories of enjoying watching the fights at the Hippodrome. Those fighters were probably controlled by parasites. His stomach turned, his skin felt uncomfortable, and something itched in the back of his mind.
He kneeled down and carefully slid the bowl by hand pushing it a good foot past the door. He screwed the patch-plate back into place, pinching the rope so the bowl couldn't get dragged further in.
Then he sat there. Leaning against the wall. Just listening. Listening for the ship to make weird sounds or serenade him with angelic hymns.
Nothing was there, only the indecipherable itching in the back of his brain, and queasiness in his stomach.

As many of you know, I began writing this series 22 years ago. I had a grand vision for the entire series – I knew how I wanted my characters to evolve, the trials and joys they would experience to shape them, and all of the major story beats I wanted to hit along the way.
Things have sometimes detoured a bit from my original outline in a most delightful way that made the story even better, but to now be writing the last trilogy as I pictured it for years is so exciting! Seeing that things are working out just as I had envisioned so long ago and knowing that this complex and enormous undertaking is all falling perfectly into place is immensely satisfying. I still expect that the characters will take me through a few unplotted twists and turns as we go (they can be willful like that) but that just makes the journey more fun!
Thank you all for your support – to know that readers are so enjoying this journey really touches my heart. While there are 2 more novels / 6 more novellas to come, never fear. While the 4th trilogy will have the ending I envisioned, I am already seeing so many amazing openings to continue and have a notebook full of scenes and ideas for the future. I intend to continue in the ALMOST HUMAN universe with stand-alone novels that will feature some newly introduced characters and surely have appearances by our beloved main cast as well. But I’m getting ahead of myself, LOL.

#PennedPossibilities 1085 — What is special about your world or universe?
I’m sure I mentioned this the other day, but the lore is different for my universe. Number one, we’re taking quite a bit from Viking mythology for this supernatural universe, things that sit right along with my own original bits and pieces. Number two, this isn’t just another Catholic and religious vampire story. I wanted to write something that was entirely different, all while still keeping the heart and soul of the Hammer Horror films there for everyone to enjoy.

Number one, we’re taking quite a bit from Viking mythology for this supernatural universe, things that sit right along with my own original bits and pieces. Number two, this isn’t just another Catholic and religious vampire story. I wanted to write something that was entirely different, all while still keeping the heart and soul of the Hammer Horror films there for everyone to enjoy.

It’s left to the imagination, and that’s because I made it a point not to do any explaining on the matter. I want the readers to make up their own minds. In this series, we only know that Catholicism isn’t real. It’s a lie fed to mortals, which Alistair tells Hati pretty early on. I didn’t want to create yet another copy-paste vampire story with the usual religious lore that comes along with each tale. That being said, mortals and immortals alike might just wander the earth as ghosts after their lives end. For instance, vampires, when they die, always become spirits. That part is a given for their kind. (They don’t just go straight to a non-existent Hell.)

We have a lot of friendships, tentative alliances, and a few romantic relationships that are either strengthening or blossoming and growing.

At some point it became a thing to say "We have a Wolf at Court, shall I consult her?" if someone wanted to call someone else's bluff.

Extra tid bit: the Fae and Sídhe call Rhai'r-tír "Wolves/Wolf" which is a different pronunciation from "wolves/wolf" that refers to the regular wolves.
