In 1982, psychologist Robert Wicklund at the University of Texas at Austin, along with his colleague Peter Gollwitzer, published research on what happens when people feel a gap between who they are and who they want to be.

They were studying what they called self-defining goals. These are not ordinary goals like losing weight or learning to cook. These are identity goals. The kind of person you want to be at your core. Strong. Intelligent. Masculine. Patriotic. Moral. Successful. The things that form the foundation of how you see yourself and how you want others to see you.

Wicklund and Gollwitzer found that when people feel incomplete in a self-defining area, they do not respond by doing the work required to close the gap. They respond by acquiring symbols that represent the identity they have not earned.

They called it symbolic self-completion.

A person who wants to be seen as masculine but doesn’t feel masculine will buy the boots, the truck, the gear. A person who wants to be seen as intelligent but hasn’t done the work will buy the books, share the quotes, display the credentials of other people. A person who wants to be seen as tough but knows they are not will put a skull decal on their vehicle and a tactical flashlight on their belt.

None of those symbols make the person more masculine, more intelligent, or more tough. But the brain doesn’t care. The symbol fills the gap temporarily. It provides a shortcut to the feeling of being complete without requiring any of the effort that actual completeness demands.

Wicklund found that the bigger the gap between who you are and who you want to be, the more aggressively you pursue the symbols. The louder the costume gets. The more flags, the more stickers, the more hats, the more yard signs. The volume is not a measure of commitment. It is a measure of the gap.

[4/5] This Father Time lights a cigar to symbolize 1876 while 1875 goes up in smoke. It's captioned "Derniere fumee, premier feu!" which translates as "Last smoke, first fire".
Santa Claus has also smoked as far back as the Victorian age, although that has changed recently 😃
Fire is, of course, a recurring symbol in midwinter traditions.

[2/5] Father Time's wings (in former post) and timepiece date back most recently to Renaissance artists and then still further back to the Greek god Chronos. Chronos sometimes had wings and he eventually became the God of Time. Chronos was originally a god of agriculture, hence the scythe 😀
This Father Time dates back to 1875/76 and is by the artist Massicotte.
