Anyone knows why ARM boards don't use simple things like Open Firmware (https://www.openfirmware.org/Open_Firmware.html) instead of the mess they use to boot?

Powered off my #homeassistant #rpi4 today to change the fan.
re-powered ... and NOTHING.
turns out, the SanDisk A2 U3 #microSD is now completely fried.
Can't even be access anymore. SD-card readers just give up completely.Really glad I did not use #hass default backup automation, but regularly pull backups to a separate server with my own script :-)

Restoring took a long while, but went smoothly.

75 MILLION cycles & 24h stress test: PASSED.
Final verdict on #RaspberryPi 4 + #Buildroot + Linux 6.19-rc1 PREEMPT_RT:
Max jitter: 118us (under heavy stress)
Max jitter: 70us (post-stress/idle)Perfect recovery, zero drift, and absolute determinism. This $50 setup is officially outperforming industrial hardware 10x its price. The future of #RTLinux is here 👊🏻

30 MILLION cycles. Max jitter: 118us. Solid as a rock. 🏁
Final report on my #Buildroot + #RaspberryPi 4 setup with Linux 6.19.0-rc1-v8 PREEMPT_RT.
After 8+ hours of torture:
🔥 stress-ng (2x VM workers)
📶 Active SSH over Wi-Fi
📊 Avg Jitter: 14us | Worst Case: 118usThe kernel isn't even stable yet, but this real-world performance is already production-ready. We are ready for the future of #RTLinux. 👊🏻

Built a custom #Buildroot system for #RaspberryPi 4 running the brand new #Linux 6.19.0-rc1-v8 with PREEMPT_RT! 🚀
Real-world stress test:
1M cycles with cyclictest
2x stress-ng VM workers (1GB RAM)
Active SSH over Wi-Fi📊 Results: Max Jitter 118us (Avg 14us).
Pure magic to see this level of determinism on a bleeding-edge kernel before its official release. Stable, lean, and mean. 🐧⚙️

🚀 Rock-solid Real-Time performance on Raspberry Pi 4!
Just stress-tested via SSH a custom #Buildroot (Kernel 6.12.61-v8 #PREEMPT_RT). Even with a massive memory hog running (stress-ng --vm 2 --vm-bytes 1G), the results are insane:
🔹 Avg Latency: 14µs
🔹 Max Latency: 42µs
🔹 Jitter: Virtually zeroThis #RPi4 is now a deterministic beast. 🐧🛠️ 64-bit RT Linux at its best!

Success! 🎉 Just finished building a custom Linux OS for my Raspberry Pi 4 using #Buildroot (raspberrypi4_64_defconfig).
SSH access is fully configured, network is up, and I'm connected remotely! This minimalist embedded system is flying. Time to start the real customization. 🚀

My #RaspberryPi 4B is acting up and I think it's data corruption(?) from not powering off properly when it stopped responding. I really need to buy a switch to shutdown safely...
I formatted the SSD (SMART status seems ok), flashed the latest #DietPi and slowly setting back my services.
This is a great chance for me to actually sort out the messy initial setup of experimenting with #SelfHosting I'm in the process of setting up a #cron job with #rsync, #syncthing & dietpi-backup now. 🤞#Rpi4

I kid you not, just did a moto24 - #raspbian #rpi4 sftp transfer via #termux because #bluetooth could not connect.
Twa's literally faster to type in than wrestle demons of #ui.
There was someone lately as had said that he doesn't like the #cli and good riddance? My dude! Looks like you could never run your fingers over it proper.
Lazy day today. Did an exercise I was putting off. Turns out it was quite simple in the end.
'kay off to bed.. night night..

In other exciting home sysadmin news, I have a problem in the #RPi4 box I use as the router for the local WiFi network: periodically, some clients disassociate, and then can't reconnect. (I don't really know why.) The general solution is to restart #hostapd. But I don't want to do that manually all the time.
I have now set up a service to restart hostapd automatically if it cannot successfully ping one of the other boxes. It runs with a systemd timer. Things seem better now.

Major upgrade today for #Jellyfin. They are changing how their database is used, so the upgrade may run for hours.
Note further that the upgrade requires the relevant partitions to have at least 2G free. On my #Debian #RPi4, I had to increase the size of /tmp in order for the upgrade to proceed.

**Update:** It took about two minutes on my box, after I increased /tmp.

@q7mJI7tk1 I have #Pihole and #unbound both running on an #RPi4 for over a year. Solid as a rock although new domain lookups take much longer the first time. After that they’re cached. About 6.5 to 7.5% of the #DNS queries get blocked. I’m super happy with the setup.

Yall talk about #solarpunk, so here's a glimpse of my new LE setup to raid BBSes at night. And srsly, 15" is more than enough if you know what you are doing 😏
Shoutout to paulie at #20forbeers . I'll get ya that 20 mate, promise honest to godess 🤘

@Mr_Dr_Oink
The #RPi4 includes 2xUSB3.0 ports (color blue). Internally, the Pi 4’s USB 3.0 ports (and also the USB 2.0 ports and Ethernet) are attached via a USB controller which itself is connected over a single PCIe bus. All USB traffic must share that internal link. Throughput is limited in the range of 200-400 MB/s.
The #RPi5 has a single-lane PCIe 2.0 link exposed via a 16-pin FPC (flat flex cable) connector. Devices can be attached via HATs that adapt that PCIe lane into M.2 or PCIe slots. -
Migration from #homeassistantcore and #pihole on an #RPi4 to an #IntelNuc is done. Gone #containerised for the move. Main motivations were #performance and #homeassistant deprecating everything except the #haos and #containerised versions.
Fairly straightforward to be honest, but just need to think about the user/permissions assumptions around the containers -
After completing most of my second #10inchrack which was going to house my #RaspberryPi #Kubernetes cluster I've decided to go a different route. I'm building a 1U unit to house the Raspberry Pi's, so I'll have to figure out what to do with this little guy :nkoThink:

Looking for some #FediHelp with some #RaspberryPi stuff - #BoostsWelcomed
I'm trying to set up a #RPi4 to interact with #SMS messages (in the UK, eventually, but setup/testing in AotearoaNZ).
Many moons ago, I had something similar going with a USB dongle from Vodafone, and #gammu - however it only worked with Vodafone SIMs. I'm wanting something not SIM locked, but that still does SMS (all the things I see online seem to be 3G/4G focussed).
Recommendations please?

Living in a #converted #bus and being an absolute #nerd
I have had ups and downs. But, I've managed to do things here that I didn't think were possible. Here is a screenshot of my main "server" in the bus, a #RPI4 running #Raspbian and on it a few #Docker containers, torrent client and more. And as you can see the uptime on the machine is 58 days and counting =D
I also have quite a few ESP32s running as well as two or three #RPIZeroW SOCs here. And all running fantastically =D

I sent my #ROCK4SE back.
Its 6 slower cores were 8% slower than the Raspberry Pi 4B's 4 faster cores doing non-graphical code or non-AES encryption (the ROCK4SE has hardware encryption).
Supposedly the ROCK4SE graphics chip is faster than the Pi4B chip - I didn't test that as my interest was as a Pi4 replacement in the GoPiGo3.
ROCK4SE idled 60degC same heatsink (inverted, processor is on bottom), #RPi4 idles at 45degC.
SPI is dev1 not dev0 - not code compatible
