  1. We (CompSci/Engineering folks which have no issue in principle with LaTeX) had a bit of a discussion of buying an #Overleaf subscription or license, which I’m highly critical of, partially because nobody could tell me yet how much it costs.

    Oh, and which problem it solves. “Everybody else is using it” also applies to cocaine, so it’s mostly not having git merge conflicts, it’d seem. No one seems to be using simultaneous editing, though.

    Investigation ongoing. @teamtype + LaTeX when? 😇

  11. Hey Fedi #academicchatter / #research people,

    What are you using (or considering) as Overleaf alternatives? The writing has been on the wall with overleaf in terms of enshitification for a while now, and I'd rather have a headstart. Also, I am not publishing or reviewing with Elsevier/RELX, so should get rid of Overleaf at some point anyhow.

    I've dabbled in hosting github.com/overleaf/overleaf myself, but I'd rather pay an ok company to stand up this type of tooling for me, to be honest.

  31. olcli v0.1.5 released! 🎉

    Fixes `push` failures (`folder_not_found`) when Overleaf's cached root folder ID is stale. Root folder resolution now uses Overleaf's collaboration socket as authoritative source, with automatic retry on failure.

    Also: E2E tests are now portable across projects + new regression test coverage.

    npm i -g @aloth/olcli
    brew upgrade olcli

  36. We're looking for further use cases of #Janeway in conjunction with #LaTeX-based workflows (e.g. #Overleaf).

    Are you working with #OJS or LaTeX-based workflows in #DOA and would like to share your experience with us?

  37. Do you know anyone using #Janeway in conjunction with #LaTeX-based workflows (e.g. #Overleaf)? If so, please share your use case. I am aware of one example but don't want to bias the responses here.

    If you are using #OJS (or anything else) for LaTeX-based workflows in #DOA contexts, that would be of interest too.

  38. We have an early present for you!
    Leveraging JabRef's brand new Git integration, it's now possible to directly sync your bibliography with Overleaf by using GitHub as an intermediate.

    We have written a short description in our blog post on how to get started.
    Currently, only one-way sync is possible!

  40. Good afternoon #Fediverse :fediverse: Hope you're all doing fine this hot Saturday afternoon, and if you're in #Adelaide, keep an eye on the #SAfires in your region.

    In today's #ConnectionList #Introduction #FollowFriday post, where I use my large # of followers to more richly connect the Fediverse, I'd like you to meet:

    @josiefraser is based in #London 🇬🇧 and leads #Digital #Policy at the National Lottery Heritage Fund. She is into #DigitalTransformation #eSafety and #edTech

    @s is Head of #Engineering at #Overleaf, which I use heavily for #academic and #research stuff. I sync it with #Git. He is into #Linux, specifically #Gentoo (ohai, on #Ubuntu here) and other #FOSS and #opensource things. In you follow #LaTeX you might want to follow Simon.

    @DrLinguo is a #linguist, who runs the @linguisticsmemes and @academiamemes which are both work a fellow, I mean, follow :blobcatgiggle:

    @drbeard79 is Dr Andrew McInnes, who is a #Reader in Romanticisms at #EdgeHill University #researcher #academic 🎓

    @robinsones is Emily and they (not assuming pronouns) are a #DataScientist, and #author of the "Build a Career in Data Science" book. They are currently in the market for a senior #DataScience role so if you are #hiring #recruiting then let Emily know! 📊

    That's all for today, don't forget to curate your own #ConnectionList.

  41. Good evening #Fediverse :fediverse:! How are we all doing this fine Tuesday? I'm taking a break from #LaTex and #OverLeaf to bring you this evening's edition of the #ConnectionList #Introduction #FollowFriday post, where I try to more closely connect the Fediverse together.

    Please meet:

  43. The documentation for #Overleaf says that Git integration is a premium feature, but I noticed it doesn't actually have the "Premium" button next to it on the settings page. Could it be the documentation is wrong and my non-premium account actually has git integration? ...

    ... yes! It works! My coauthors can continue to voluntarily suffer the indignities of Overleaf's editor¹ while I bask in the glory of #Emacs!

    -----
    ¹ Actually, the #Vim emulation is perfectly usable and includes stuff you wouldn't think would make the cut, such as ~ to toggle case and macros!

    I wczoraj wieczorem, już smażyłem gwiazdy, bo niebo wyjątkowo czyste było, przyszło olśnienie.

    A dziś zrealizowałem.

    Własna instancja Overleaf! Przecież to takie proste. A że głównie ten „ofis” miał być pod kątem edycji prostych tekstów...

    … i trochę mniej prostych:

    \subsection{}
    Pole trójkąta o wierzchołkach $A = (1,2)$, $B = (3,0)$, $C=(2,4)$ można obliczyć stosując następującą metodę:

    \begin{itemize}
    \item zaznaczamy w układzie współrzędnych punkty $ABC$;
    \item rysujemy prostokąt $KLMN$ w sposób przedstawiony na rysunku (odpowiednie boki prostokąta mają być
    równoległe do osi układu współrzędnych);
    \item odczytujemy długości odpowiednich odcinków: $|KL|=2$, $|LM|=4$, $|AK|=2$, $|MC|=1$, $|CN|=1$,
    $|NA|=2$;
    \item obliczamy pole prostokąta: $P+{KLMN}=|KL|\cdot|LM|=2\cdot 4=8$;
    \item obliczamy pola odpowiednich trójkątów prostokątnych:

    $P_{\triangle AKL}=\frac{1}{2}|AK|\cdot|KL|=\frac{1}{2}\cdot 2 \cdot 2 =2$

    $P_{\triangle LMC}=\frac{1}{2}\cdot|LM|\cdot|MC|=\frac{1}{2}\cdot 4 \cdot 1 = 2$

    $P_{\triangle CNA}=\frac{1}{2}\cdot|CN|\cdot|NA|=\frac{1}{2}\cdot 1 \cdot 2 = 1$;

    \item od pola prostokąta odejmujemy sumę pól trójkątów: $P_{\triangle ABC}=8-(2+2+1)=3$.
    \end{itemize}

    Stosując \underline{opisaną wyżej} metodę, oblicz pole trójkąta o wierzchołkach $A=(1,0)$, $B=(5,1)$, $C=(3,4)$.

    To Overleaf, to świetne rozwiązanie!

  45. Is "reality" more real that "reality"? Is reality real? Should we accept another reality? Or are LLM-based text writing aids an obnoxius waste of time? Here, overleaf, illustrating:

    Just adding endof10.org here for convenience.

    A real-life anecdote from today on "convincing" people is that some researchers unaware that #Overleaf is on an #OpenCore model were delighted to hear about the #AGPL 'd branch - source [1] - example instance [2]. I did *not* try to convince anyone - I just pointed out the possibility and gave URLs. And a new (non-public) overleaf instance may be the result!
