@Prediger_EF Ist natürlich auch eine Dokumentation von einer persönlichen Disziplin beim Datensichern und von Formaten, die man längerfristig nutzen kann - dank #TeX geht es bei mir bis 89 zurück - davor war ich auf Apple II und konnte bei der Migration meine Texte nicht gut mitnehmen...

Vermutlich waren auch schon damals gute Gedanken dabei - das finde ich beim gelegentlichen Blättern in Tagebuchnotizen spannend...

@Purplegengar25 A good template to start with is quite helpful. If you're mainly writing paragraphs of text, rather than fancy equations, you won't need to worry about a lot of the elaborate things LaTeX can do. But putting in tables and inserting figures becomes straightforward after you've done it a few times.

As an editor who has worked on documents in LaTeX and those in Word, I find I prefer the former. I'm happier when I can be in my linux text editor of choice (vim for me).

Regex, even at a very basic level, is the most effective productivity booster for everyone dealing with texts, ie, everyone.

The complete absence of any regex competence among almost all professionals (except programmers) has always baffled me.

If we could replace wordprocessors by TeX and Regex, everywhere, we'd liberate everyone from the most mind-numbing battles with their document processing software. Uncounted unpleasant work hours saved, at zero cost. No need to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on water-guzzling data centres to make it happen! Just a few quiet hours of training, between friends.

The analogy to basic arithmetic is apt. An essential life skill that doesn't come naturally to most people but that can be acquired by all.

Since Detexify is now #AI slop, I have updated my one-pager of advice for learning mathematics to recommend The Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List (https://tug.ctan.org/info/symbols/comprehensive/symbols-a4.pdf) for finding symbols. This is kind of a bad solution, since Detexify solved the problem of knowing how to draw the symbol without knowing its name with a very appropriate use of traditional image recognition. It is absurd that there is no #FLOSS tool I can recommend instead. If no one builds it first, it'll go on my list of things to do.

I'm pleased to announce that I managed to get the draft Common Lisp Specification translated from TeX to an s-expression based document format. I started this project in 2015 and finally finished it this year (maybe a bit late for it to be relevant).

The HTML proof-of-concept is at metaspec.dev/ and is probably the most complete rendering of the spec to date. It contains the acknowledgements, the appendix, errata, and preserves editorial TeX comments in the margins. It uses a patching system against sdoc to make auditable corrections and MathML to render the TeX mathy bits.

The code that generates it, and a copy of the metaspec.sdoc file can be found at codeberg.org/dlowe/metaspectre
