There’s a lot of ongoing work in documentation:
“A not so short introduction” (ANSS – community edition; https://codeberg.org/anss-ce/ANSS-CE/) gained a new chapter about math, and “ConTeXt – an excursion” is being updated to LMTX, to be released soon.

The upcoming update will contain fixes for initials in Hebrew and Indic languages where a vocal “accent” can belong to a letter. (At the last online meet-up, a user presented the problem.)

Also, there will be a possibility to declare colors in PNG images without alpha channel as transparent (“index mask”).

Since a few weeks, the “handwritten” math font Pennstander, companion to the freely available Grandstander, is part of the ConTeXt distribution and fully supported.

Nach vielen positiven Reaktionen (danke!) habe ich gerade den ersten Verriss meines ConTeXt-Buchs bekommen. Der Leser findet es schlechter als alle LaTeX-Bücher, die er gelesen hat.
Immerhin hat er sich die Mühe gemacht, mir seine Kritikpunkte aufzuschreiben.
Ein paar Dinge kann ich sicherlich in der nächsten Auflage verbessern. Antworten mag ich aber nicht…

Another update for ConTeXt:
– bugfixes
– \externalfigure[foo.png][gray=yes]
– context --extra=compare --colors=red,blue one.pdf two.pdf
– new "squeeze" keyword for left and right justification
– align=fixed:small / broad:small (small penalty for interpunction)
– \pbsp as “possibly keep together space”

At the ConTeXt intro workshop last Wednesday, participants struggled with ConTeXt on the newly released TeX Live 2026.
Not the usual about wrong paths or unwritable cache directories.

ConTeXt was apparently correctly installed, generating the file database and the format was working, but then it couldn’t find the format file if the "context" or "mtxrun" command wasn’t called with its full path.

TeX Live’s processes were changed before this release and something’s broken.

Frank Mittelbach, Karl Berry, Hans Hagen, and Herbert Voß were just elected as honorary members of DANTE e.V. for their life-long work and commitment for TeX and its community.

Hans Hagen continued with visual examples of the typesetting improvements they developed for #TeXConTeXt to produce more complex layouts using column sets.

The increased flexibility is amazing and his slides also illustrate why one might want to take toddlers and twins into account when optimizing the typesetting.

I will add a link to the slides as soon as they are publshed. Guess it's better to show than try to explain ;-)

Inspired by @samcarter ’s talk at DANTE’s spring meeting, Hans implemented cistercian numerals* in ConTeXt. With the next update, you’ll be able to use them as number conversion "c". (Since ~2 years you can already use Kaktovik numerals* as conversion "k".)

Hans Hagen zeige anschließend einige Beispiele für die Verbesserungen in #TeXConTeXt, um verbesserrte Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten im Satz zu zeigen. Er fokussierte sich da auf visuelle Beispiele aus Rücksicht auf Teilnehmende, die kein #TeXConTeXt sprechen aber hob dadurch auch schön die Flexibilität des Konzeptes des „Column Sets“ hervor.

Wieder einmal mit netten Kommentaren zu komischen Vorgaben von Verlagen, z.B. Registerhaltigkeit in Layouts die dafür nicht gemacht sind …

This presentation included nice examples showing the mechanisms #LuaMetaTeX (and #LuaTeX) provide to create macros using Lua as well as the internal JSON parser.
