  1. "A lot of things don't change until things structurally change. If your team can't deploy at will, that's a constraint. If you're supposed to be data-informed, but have to jump through hoops to instrument a metric—and then another set of hoops to even see the dashboard—that's a constraint. If accessing customers requires five people's permission, it probably won't happen. If engineers are incentivized for individual accomplishments instead of shared outcomes, you'll end up with too much work in progress and not enough finished value. "
John Cutler on Marty Cagan and SVPG.

But that is the whole point: How helpful are very generalistic advices with an added extra "Google did that" sauce on it? Exactly, not much.

  2. I read a lot about "anti-pattern" in teams and organizations. What is that supposed to be?
I can observe patterns in teams and orgs. Some are helpful, some are not so helpful in that given context. The same pattern, that fails in one context, works well in another. All patterns served a purpose at a time, which might not be given anymore and makes them obsolete.

Talking about "anti-pattern" is normative BS and belongs to cults, not to social science. #justsaying

  4. Whitepaper on #dev productivity vs problem solving culture:

(full text is linked in the article)

"[..] we have argued that it is time to move past debates about increasing individual developer productivity (which is frequently narrowly operationalized as developer output), and shift focus to creating a broader science of
    collective developer problem-solving."

  5. „Everybody counts or nobody counts“ says Harry Bosch.

This is one of the reasons why pilots, labs, experiments and other forms of dabbling in organizational development suck.

  8. This is likely going to be an eye-opener for many of you, Rijon and I discussed "From Trist to Today" with my wonderful friend Paul Tolchinsky – co-creator of #WholeScaleChange, #EODF founder and author of 2 books & many articles in the field of #OrgDev. In our conversation, we traced the history of OD in practice, from its beginnings to today, and into the future. This 67-min. video should be worth your while!

  9. You cannot fully understand organizational dynamics if you do not understand #OrgPhysics: Which means to embrace the fact that every organization has three kinds of structure, three kinds of power and three #leaderships.

  14. In his new book on #BeyondBudgeting, my former BBRT colleague Bjarte Bogsnes does a great job at outlining the principles of an organizational model that works in today's complex world. Bjarte brilliantly frames the case for #transformation. He also shows why the time to act is NOW. This is also a terrific read for anyone who wants to learn about the roots, or origins of the #BetaCodex. amazon.com/This-Beyond-Budgeti

  15. In "social" processes like change and organizational development, notions like "implementation" are misunderstandings turned method!
Change work done should NEVER involve implementation, execution, experimentation or piloting. linkedin.com/pulse/transformat

  16. The assumption that change work ("change management") in organizations can be divided into phases like "planning" and "implementation" is testament to a profound lack of understanding of social systems and social dynamics.
    A far better approach: linkedin.com/pulse/transformat

  17. Let's strive for unity among the #lean, #agile and #betacodex movements - and all others that also wish to promote self-organization, decentralization and organizational democracy!

  18. #Delegation: "As your boss, I give you a specific authority now. I can take it away from you any time I want."

#Empowerment: "As your boss, I authorize you to act responsibly within boundaries I define."

#Decentralization: "Teams in the periphery are in charge."

    Big difference.

  19. Don't miss next Monday's episode of #BetaCodexLIVE! @rijon and @nielspflaeging will turn to the question if the #Agile, #Lean and Beta movements are one, if they should be one, if they are diverging or converging - and what needs to be done to unite them, if we do not want them all to descend into primitive tribalism!

  20. Culture eats nothing at all.
Culture is merely a shadow of an organization:
Change the system - the culture will follow!
    Culture is "obedient", not "powerful".
    It is "output", not "input."
The culture is shit? Work the system!

  21. The command-and-control trolls are everywhere now on social media.

They talk about "strategy" (again), they talk about "leaders" and leading, they talk about planning (a lot), they talk about scaling, aligning, hacking, and other stuff. They ignore science, assigning new meanings to concepts from empathy to culture, from learning to change.

The dark side is strong in them.
