  1. Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a great #Matariki weekend.

Mine was lovely. Would definitely long weekend again.

  2. On the night of #Matariki I visited the Karikari Peninsula in Northern #NZ to take some dark sky #astrophotography. Here are two of them, both 3 minute exposures showing the Milky Way. The two #Maori "pou" in one of the photos overlook and protect Maitai Bay and Waikato Bay. They're clearly painted with a kind of glow-in-the-dark paint, which is faintly visible in person but shines brightly in an exposure like this. #NewZealand #Aotearoa #Astronomy #Space #Photography

  3. Wonderful morning watching #Matariki and the rising of the sun on te tau hou over Tauranga Moana with my friends and neighbours and listening to the waiata and kōrero. We had the first wānanga in the warm sun. Hosted very kindly by Ngati Hinerangi. I didn’t check my few photos until this evening.

  4. #AucklandNZ - Free #LoveFoodHateWaste #Matariki workshop – Glendene

    Saturday, 11 July 2026
    11:00 am - 2:00 pm

    Glendene Community Hub
    82 Hepburn Rd, Glendene, Auckland

"Matariki is a time to celebrate with #kai (food), gather, and reflect on #TeTaiao (the environment), making it a perfect opportunity to practice #sustainability by reducing food waste. Join Wei for this Love Food Hate Waste – Matariki workshop. Bring a few vegetarian soup ingredients such as herbs, garden produce, or simply veges in your fridge that are edible, just looking a bit tired. Together we will make a warm hearty soup to share.

We will be learning about each #whetū (star) and ā rātou tohu o te taiao (their environmental signs); Reflecting on the knowledge of kai we have each learned from our own ancestors. Practical advice about how to be creative with your fresh food and leftovers will be given, to help them last longer. Making the most of the food we have helps save money and is better for the environment. We will play a few games and sing waiata together to consolidate our learning.

This is a hands-on activity. Please bring your chopping board, knife and your taste buds along.

Please inform Wei [email protected] if any food allergies need to be accommodated.

This Love Food Hate Waste workshop is proudly supported by Auckland Council and delivered by #CompostCollective.

    Space limited. Booking is essential.

Register this workshop today to celebrate #TeTauHouMāori (the #Māori #NewYear) with us.

  5. Finally, and appropriately today, one for absent friends.

    "It's been a long day
    Without you, my friend
And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again
    We've come a long way
    From where we began
Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again"

  7. Manawatia a Matariki!

(for those that don't know, it's the New Year for Māori, and all else whom celebrate it, in Aotearoa New Zealand en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matariki)

  8. Happy #Matariki to all those celebrating te Māori New Year.

I hate to say but it feels like a midsummer day here in Tāmaki Makaurau which is quite alarming considering today is a midwinter festival.

  9. Known as the Pleiades, the rising of the Matariki star cluster marks the beginning of the Māori lunar calendar. Nine of the stars are called Waitī, Waitā, Waipunā-ā-rangi, Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Ururangi, Pōhutukawa, Hiwa-i-te-rangi, and Matariki. #Matariki #NewZealand

  10. "We live in a world increasingly designed to capture, fragment, and monetise our attention. Media outlets compete relentlessly for views. Phones buzz in pockets with alerts, messages, and meeting reminders. And AI delivers a mix of existential dread and FOMO (the overhyped fear of missing out).

"In these volatile times, #Matariki offers an opportunity to slow down, to look up, to reconnect with others, and to remember who came before us. It is a time to regain perspective on what matters in life." 🇳🇿

  14. The start of Pipiri is Monday week, so that’s close enough to the public commemoration of #Matariki on Friday. Since our peoples used the same calendar (right down to which years have leap months) it’s very easy to calculate when it is: basically near the start of 六月 for us (thrown out occasionally by when we add leap months—Māori are more practical on this and append Ruhanui to the end, which makes it all simpler)!

Plan ahead: This is a great film to teach with for Matariki on July 4-19!

  19. Ngā mihi harikoa ki a koutou, mo te rā whakatā ā-ture o Matariki.

    Happy Matariki public holiday everyone.

In Te Reo Māori, #Matariki is the name of a star cluster known in English as the Seven Sisters. Subaru to the Japanese. Pleiades to astronomers, and ancient Greeks and Romans.

For Māori, seeing Matariki in the night sky marks the start of a new year. As winter solstice passes, a time to reflect on the year ended, and envision the year to come.

    In that spirit, a little #TechHistory ...
