  1. #AucklandNZ - Free #LoveFoodHateWaste #Matariki workshop – Glendene

    Saturday, 11 July 2026
    11:00 am - 2:00 pm

    Glendene Community Hub
    82 Hepburn Rd, Glendene, Auckland

"Matariki is a time to celebrate with #kai (food), gather, and reflect on #TeTaiao (the environment), making it a perfect opportunity to practice #sustainability by reducing food waste. Join Wei for this Love Food Hate Waste – Matariki workshop. Bring a few vegetarian soup ingredients such as herbs, garden produce, or simply veges in your fridge that are edible, just looking a bit tired. Together we will make a warm hearty soup to share.

We will be learning about each #whetū (star) and ā rātou tohu o te taiao (their environmental signs); Reflecting on the knowledge of kai we have each learned from our own ancestors. Practical advice about how to be creative with your fresh food and leftovers will be given, to help them last longer. Making the most of the food we have helps save money and is better for the environment. We will play a few games and sing waiata together to consolidate our learning.

This is a hands-on activity. Please bring your chopping board, knife and your taste buds along.

Please inform Wei [email protected] if any food allergies need to be accommodated.

This Love Food Hate Waste workshop is proudly supported by Auckland Council and delivered by #CompostCollective.

  2. I reviewed Mike Joy's memoir "The Fight For Freshwater" for the December issue of Takahē Magazine. It's a really good read – and Mike has had a fascinating life in all sorts of interesting ways. 3. The #Maori taught me that the Western #society model is deeply flawed, designed to keep people fighting each other rather than working together as families #Whānau and communities #iwi to care for one another and the environment #TeTaiao we live in.

The Māori cultural approach has much to teach us in how we can survive the #ClimateEmergency and improve our health and society

  4. #NZTwits Highly recommend watching this documentary when you have 45 mins to spare.

Tells the story of Bay of Plenty's natural environment but it has broader use/meaning/lessons than that.

    It's a roller-coaster - awe-inspiring beauty, tears-inducing destruction.
