  1. 🌊 Nachträglich zum #WorldOceansDay am 08. Juni:

    Welche Meeresdaten interessieren Dich besonders?

  3. 🌊 Oceans cover more than 70% of our planet.
    🌊 Oceans are under pressure.

Yet they give us so much:

    Oxygen to breathe.
    Food and livelihoods.
    A stable climate.

Protecting the ocean means protecting life on Earth.👇

  9. RT by @EUCYPRUS: 🌊The oceans are not simply a natural resource. They are the foundation of life on our planet.

Today, on #WorldOceansDay, we celebrate everything the oceans give us: over half the oxygen we breathe, climate balance, biodiversity, food, livelihoods, economic opportunities, wellbeing and resilience.

The EU Ocean Pact places the protection and sustainable management of our seas at the heart of European policy. Because what is good for the ocean is good for all of us.

Healthy oceans. Healthy planet. Healthy societies.

  10. RT by @EUCYPRUS: 🌊 On today's on #WorldOceansDay, we’re spotlighting a powerful act of collective environmental action. ♻️🌍

In a recent beach clean-up organized with @spot_turtles 🤝, #UNFICYP civilians, military personnel, and @UNPOL officers came together side by side, not just to remove waste, but to send a clear message: protecting our oceans is a shared responsibility. 🧑🤝🧑👮‍♂️

🗑️ From plastic packaging to discarded fishing gear, over 550 kilos of rubbish was removed from Akdeniz/Agia Irene beach. Every piece collected is a step toward healthier seas and stronger communities. 🐠🌊 #A4P

  14. It's #WorldOceansDay. My favourite parts of the ocean are those adjacent to Antarctica, Greenland and other locations where ice flows into the sea. There is something magical about the juxtaposition of ice and the ocean. Unfortunately though, warming and changes in ocean circulation are increasingly turning this association into an unhealthy one for the ice.
Photo shows the vessel Bark Europa, taken during the voyage to the Antarctic Peninsula I joined earlier this year.

  17. At @ECMWF we have routine monitoring plots of the (old) ocean analysis system #ORAS5*.
These are designed by my office mate and ocean expert Eric de Boisseson.
I asked him about El Niño and he immediately pulled up not maps, but vertical cross sections along the equator.

    Plots are openly available here:
    charts.ecmwf.int/catalogue/pac

When you look at things this way, the expectation that we will soon get a surface heat anomaly in the eastern Pacific doesn't need much more explanation.

    2/2

*The new system, #ORAS6, is in place but publishing the equivalent plots is not yet there.

  19. Why are forecasters confident that El Niño is on its way? Especially when looking at SSTs and they seem underwhelming?

We need to look deeper into the ocean.

  26. This #WorldOceansDay, marine protected areas have officially surpassed the 10% mark globally.

To reach the UN goal of protecting 30% of the oceans by 2030, another 20% must be secured over the next 4 years.

Experts warn many sites remain "paper parks" that still allow destructive bottom trawling. mongabay.cc/zkrxPV

  30. Happy World Oceans Day!

Remember that, as Herman Melville put it, "however baby man may brag of his science and skill, and however much, in a flattering future, that science and skill may augment; yet for ever and for ever, to the crack of doom, the sea will insult and murder him, and pulverize the stateliest, stiffest frigate he can make".
