Got some #Zigbee #Lightbulbs so that I can time #lights with my instance of #HomeAssistant. Previously, they were plugged in via a timer, which had to be adjusted every so often as the length of the day varies in length. Now the timing should follow time time of #Sunset automatically.

It’s getting dark outside.

I think I’ll go and panic buy light bulbs.

Seems to me that something went wrong with some California lightbulb efficiency law, that only a very small handful of companies (FEIT Electric, EcoSmart, and Cree at the high end) plus graymarket sellers (Amazon random brands) are now selling here. Curious what the story is. (No Philips, no GE, etc.). Has there been a consolidation or is this a California thing? Anyway, almost seems like a monopoly. #lightbulbs

While I knew how LED bulbs function, I’d not caught up on the mass manufacturing of them. It’s so fascinating to me what part of it is manual and what is automated… factory design and automation is a fascinating engineering problem that needs to balance human nature, current cost efficient line of automation and then depreciation + determine how the arc moves when it comes to manufacturing automation.

I visited Robert Haus, a national neon treasure two days ago in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
I have known him online for years, and he moved from Alaska so now he is slightly easier to visit.

Robert has probably the best collection of historic neon artifacts, especially when it comes to old bending equipment, transformers, catalogs, and other difficult to find oddities. "Neon Archaeology" is his thing and his blog catalogs his journeys,

I gave him some hand pulled tubing to play with in exchange for some coffee beans he roasted and some really old rare electrodes. It was so nice to meet him and his wife.

I’ve just now realised #SmartHome #lightbulbs don’t make any sense. Not unless the switch is smart too. If you keep the dumb switch around, people will use it out of habit, powering the device off.

That being said, #TPLink #Tapo #L535, despite giving a very nice light, is an utter shit. Can’t stay on the WiFi or #Matter network for a day. Usual quality of TP-Link software, I guess…

My old #ESP8266 boards do a better job of remembering WiFi creds and settings…😂🤡

A little video of Galen's finished "Slumlord" sign. I bent the neon for him, and some of his sign painter buddies helped with the paint design.

Galen wears the "Slumlord" badge with pride- refusing to raise rent on his property in the rapidly gentrifying Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma. The piece is inspired by another landlord with a coin operated gas meter on the stove (quarters for cooking time).

We love the clickity clackety of the mechanical incandescent bulb flasher in there- Galen mounted it so the whole metal "can" acts as an "amplifier". Galen loves anything mechanical. It was way fun being his Teachers Assistant for the class.

The ruby red glass in this came from Chihuly "Studio 1" in Tacoma (long since moved to Seattle)

Hmm, discovered 540 watts of excessive power usage at this house. Security lights are still 90W halogen lights. Can get that down to 66W, saving 474 watts when those lights are on (at night or when accidentally left on). I wonder how many other people around here have failed to change out their lights and are paying way too much for energy usage? #EnergyEfficiency #energy #savings #lightbulbs
