KDE Plasma 6.5 released!
KDE Plasma has been upgraded to version 6.5 to provide you with big improvements for your desktop experience on your Linux installation. It has been officially announced in the KDE website that stated that KDE was “on the verge of making it big for the general public” and that it has reached the inflection point. This upgrade turns your awesome desktop to a more fantastic desktop that adds new features while incorporating many improvements.
KDE Plasma 6.5 brings more awesome features, including, but not limited to:
- Automatic theme transitions: it allows you to configure when your desktop automatically switches between light and dark theme variants.
- Caret text navigation: The zoom panel now follows the caret when you’re typing something in an application.
- KRunner fuzzy search: KRunner’s search function now finds your items more efficiently, even when you’re writing it wrong.
- Rounded bottom window corners: Your windows now have rounded bottom windows corners to achieve consistency in look.
- Pinned clipboard items: You can now pin your favorite or frequently used clipboard items at the top of the list.
Improvements to the accessibility feature have also been added to this version of KDE Plasma desktop so that color-sensitive users can use the grayscale color filter to apply to their desktop. Additionally, the screen reader underwent many upgrades to describe actions and keyboard shortcuts more clearly and to read the Caps Lock state.
KDE Plasma’s Discover app store can now handle Flatpak links, which causes the Flatpak’s install button to automatically open Discover to install your favorite Flatpak application. Additionally, it gained support for updating your device drivers for operating systems that support this function to make updating drivers easy and seamless.
Finally, performance improvements are now in place with this version of KDE Plasma, with the splash screens duration being reduced while the desktop loads faster, which makes your computer snappier than before. Overlay plane support has been added to reduce CPU usage when displaying full-screen content on your screen, if you have a compatible GPU.
Linux distributions will pick up this desktop environment, depending on their package update schedule and policy. Rolling distributions, such as Arch Linux, will get KDE Plasma 6.5 more quickly than other distributions, so you’ll have to wait for the update to appear on your system, depending on the version of your Linux distribution.

KDE Plasma 6.5 will be released next week!
The KDE Plasma 6.5 desktop will be released next week, because it already has reached the end of development stage with a lot of bug fixes and general improvements, in addition to performance boosts and feature additions, to enhance your desktop experience with added performance to make your PC snappier than before.
KDE celebrates its 29th birthday event by releasing the KDE Plasma 6.5 desktop on the 21st of October to the general public. Additionally, people are encouraged to donate to the KDE project fundraiser as a way to celebrate the birthday and to help the project reach its goals. Donations are in Euros.
Alongside the birthday celebration, the KDE development team started development of Plasma 6.6 by introducing some of the new features, such as the new color scheme for the Application Dashboard widget. Dark and light modes are supported, so this widget looks more uniform. However, polishing of the design is needed to match the aesthetics of the KDE Plasma desktop. You can see the screenshots below:
As we are looking forward into the release of KDE Plasma 6.5 in three days, we will inform you of the release.

KDE Plasma 6.5 color blindness correction now features grayscale
KDE Plasma 6.5 now features a new color blindness correction mode in the accessibility settings of the KDE Plasma desktop. This new mode desaturates all colors so that everything is in the scale of grays, called grayscale. This basically turns your desktop to what it would look like before colors were introduced to televisions and cameras.
This mode can be turned on by going to KDE Settings > Accessibility > Color Blindness Correction and adjusting the Problematic Colors entry to All (grayscale mode). After that, all colors will be turned to grayscale colors in your desktop, just like below:
Additionally, development of KDE Plasma 6.6 was reportedly in the works, with new features being added to the next version, such as the improved color blindness correction settings look.

KDE Plasma 6.5 introduces “App Permissions” page!
The upcoming KDE Plasma 6.5 has undergone many changes, such as the setup wizard, the favorites to the clipboard manager, and quick settings toggle. Now, we have another page that is being on the way to the stable KDE Plasma 6.5 release ahead of the Akademy event, called “App Permissions.”
As you can see, the “Flatpak Permissions” page, which only showed permissions for all Flatpak applications installed in your system, has now been expanded to cover a more broad range of applications other than the Flatpak ones. To do this, the page has been renamed to “App Permissions.”
It not only allows you to configure permissions for each app separately, but it also allows you to configure settings related to the XDG portal system, such as taking screenshots of an application. Alongside this, there is a brand new permission that allows apps that use the XDG portal to set lock and home screen wallpapers.

KDE Plasma 6.5 adds favorites to clipboard manager
This week, we have some of the new feature additions to the upcoming KDE Plasma 6.5 desktop environment. While some of those features that were added are interesting, we have a particular feature we want to give a shout out, because it increases productivity significantly.
This new feature that we’re talking about was turned from a 22-year old feature request that was reported in 2003 (while KDE 3.1 was the current desktop version) using the old KDE Bugzilla instance to fruition in KDE Plasma 6.5! The KDE Team has now considered this to be a new record for the oldest feature request ever implemented!
You can now add your commonly-pasted items to the starred items so that you can access them more easily than before. Not only that, but you can save them permanently so that you don’t lose them between sessions.
To star a clipboard item, drag your mouse cursor to a clipboard item that you wish to favorite, then press the star button to add it to your favorite clipboard items. This is similar to how Samsung’s keyboard clipboard “pinning” feature works in One UI.
To learn more about more features added and improved this week, you can consult the below page.

KDE Plasma 6.5 brings the Setup Wizard
This week, the KDE team has officially pushed the initial system setup wizard to the upcoming KDE Plasma 6.5 environment. This ensures that the Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) principle is applied when setting up the KDE desktop for the first time.
This was inspired by the idea that the introductory window would show up when you first start up KDE Plasma. However, the Welcome Center doesn’t do a job related to user accounts: it’s about setting up a user account for you! So, to solve this problem, the setup wizard will start when you start KDE for the first time, especially on OEM installations.
From now on, when you start your computer that has KDE installed for the first time, you’ll be greeted with this screen:
The same official blog article that will be linked below shows you another part of the setup wizard, which, along with the username creation, is the keyboard layout and the language selection.
To learn more about the setup wizard, as well as many improvements that landed to this version of KDE Plasma, click on the below button.

KDE Plasma 6.5 shows the device connection notification
The upcoming version of KDE Plasma 6.5 has undergone many improvements under the name of polishing. Alongside the huge amount of improvements that we saw this week, according to the official blog post, one change felt worth mentioning.
Starting from KDE Plasma 6.5, a notification now appears when a USB device or any other device gets connected to your computer. This will help users know that the device has been recognized by the system, and the device name will be shown in the notification.
The notification was made for accessibility reasons, but it can also be used to troubleshoot issues related to the device connection. This simplifies the troubleshooting task for power users.
Those notifications are, fortunately, not intrusive, because the KDE team made it so that such notifications are not annoying. Not only that, but those notifications can also be turned off, leaving the sounds intact. Different sounds will be played, depending on the device connection state. If you don’t like such sounds, they can be turned off from the system settings.
This change has been made as part of the EU Directive 2019/882 compliance rules.

KDE Plasma 6.5 no longer colors the 3rd-party app icons
The upcoming version of KDE Plasma 6.5 has undergone many improvements under the name of polishing. Alongside the huge amount of improvements that we saw this week, according to the official blog post, one change felt worth mentioning.
Starting from KDE Plasma 6.5, all third party application icons will no longer be provided with the default Breeze icon theme. The decision, which was labeled as complicated, stemmed from the fact that overriding the branding of those apps was considered “rude.”
In addition to that, the KDE Plasma team also showed a lack of interest and resources to maintain all third-party application icons in the Breeze icon theme, especially as applications may go through the process of rebranding, which means that icons are being changed.
However, the KDE team invites anyone who prefers the colored third-party icons on their Plasma desktop to create an icon theme that contains only those removed icons from this tree and to publish said theme to the KDE Store. This is possible, given that the KDE desktop environment is open source to begin with.
