This version of Ubuntu, which was released on October 2025, has reached its end of life period. Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka brought Linux 6.17, systemd 257.9, .NET 10.0, and various new versions of different packages. Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray Snapshot 1 released!
Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray has four development snapshots to help you test this version of Ubuntu without having to rely on daily builds. This was done as part of the official plan that the release team have released on the official Ubuntu documentation site.
The official plan stated that the Ubuntu release team wanted to release Ubuntu every six months, while relying on the modern software engineering practices. More automated testing will be made to ensure that future releases will have next-to-zero problems that may cause a delay of the release. Alongside this, the release process will be refined to achieve the goal of little to no human intervention when dealing with releases.
The Ubuntu release team describe the snapshot releases as not production-ready releases, but as testable milestones that allow you to try out the upcoming version of Ubuntu without having to wait until the official release.
You can find those snapshots here:
- Ubuntu
- Edubuntu
- Kubuntu
- Lubuntu
- Xubuntu
- Ubuntu Budgie
- Ubuntu MATE
- Ubuntu Unity
- Ubuntu Cinnamon
- Ubuntu Kylin (麒麟)
- Ubuntu Studio
Why not try out this snapshot to get early access to new features and to report bugs?

Ubuntu 25.10 Flatpak issue fix is on the way!
Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka was released a week ago, and it brought many new exciting features. Sadly, it appears that it has broken Flatpak support, as users were encountering errors when trying to install any Flatpak application, and bug reports, such as this one, were being landed to Launchpad.
When Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka was released, users have discovered that the installation of any Flatpak application fails with error messages stating that it’s unable to unmount revokefs-fuse, which is a fatal bug. Additionally, AppArmor generates messages that talk about permission denial of file accesses in
/run/mount/utaband its related files, which are/run/mount/utab.*.The error messages that are generated when trying to install any Flatpak application are:
Warning: Could not unmount revokefs-fuse filesystem at /var/tmp/flatpak-cache-4EB3B3/org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default-FAB3B3: Child process exited with code 1Warning: Could not unmount revokefs-fuse filesystem at /var/tmp/flatpak-cache-4EB3B3/org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default-K8HAC3: Child process exited with code 1Warning: Could not unmount revokefs-fuse filesystem at /var/tmp/flatpak-cache-4EB3B3/org.freedesktop.Platform.openh264-D0P4B3: Child process exited with code 1Warning: Could not unmount revokefs-fuse filesystem at /var/tmp/flatpak-cache-4EB3B3/org.gnome.Platform.Locale-QP83B3: Child process exited with code 1Warning: Could not unmount revokefs-fuse filesystem at /var/tmp/flatpak-cache-4EB3B3/org.gtk.Gtk3theme.Yaru-dark-M2N7B3: Child process exited with code 1error: Failed to install org.gnome.Platform: Could not unmount revokefs-fuse filesystem at /var/tmp/flatpak-cache-4EB3B3/org.gnome.Platform-EM6KC3: Child process exited with code 1
The bug will be fixed soon, but the fix has landed to the
-proposedrepository pocket with version5.0.0~alpha1-0ubuntu8.1of apparmor. Before, the version that came with the release was5.0.0~alpha1-0ubuntu8.When this fixed version was installed, people began verifying that the fix actually worked, and it looks like that the fix worked, as Flatpak installations seemed to have succeeded, and that the resulting applications were running fine. However, AppArmor still generates denial messages related to DAC_OVERRIDE and SETUID capabilities.
If the fix lands, you’ll be able to install and run Flatpak applications on your system.

I upgraded to #Ubuntu2510, it took around 20 minutes and, after I rebooted, everything worked as before. Far is the time I was afraid an upgrade would break my computer. This upgrade process is the best I have seen lately, Windows updates are so slow and inpredictable, MacOS is a mess every time, from what I can read. Rust Coreutils “uutils” v0.1 released!
The developers behind the Rust coreutils, called
Learn moreuutils, have reached a major milestone with the release of v0.1.0. This comes after the last release, which was v0.0.30. This version is now on GitHub, which you can check out below. This version of uutils contains many interesting changes done to the system utilities, including
cp,ls, and others. The SELinux support has been added tocp,ls,mkdir, mknod, mkfifo, install, andstatfor systems that are security oriented. This makes sure that systems with this coreutils implementation can now enjoy better security with SELinux enabled, especially when SELinux is enforcing. In addition to that, the speed has been improved to match and possibly exceed the legacy GNU coreutils performance. You can now notice the improved speed in commands like
cat,ls,wc,tail, seq, and more. Thanks to many commits and contributions done to the Rust coreutils project, it has witnessed many changes done to various commands, such as date allowing negative date offsets, echo allowing double hyphens, and print fixing octal escape parsing.
In addition to that, the test suite compatibility has seen increasing number of successes. While 0.0.30 has 507 passes; 41 skips; and 69 fails, version 0.1.0 has 522 passes; 31 skips; and 65 passes.
As a result, as future versions get released, compatibility with the older GNU coreutils increases. This is evidenced by the increasing number of succeeding unit tests for the Rust coreutils project, especially when it comes to SELinux-related tests.
You can consult the official website of Rust coreutils below.
Official websiteWhat about Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is planning to ship
uutilsto replace the older GNU coreutils as part of the broader plan, called “Oxidizing Ubuntu.” Ubuntu 25.10 will be the first version of Ubuntu that will use this coreutils implementation to ensure that your Ubuntu system becomes both more secure and quicker; furthermore, your productivity will increase as the improved performance becomes prevalent in this release.Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka will use the Rust coreutils during the development cycle, along with the Rust implementation of sudo called
rs-sudo. In later development milestones, Ubuntu will use thefindutilsand thediffutilsprojects from the masteruutilsproject. You will be able to download the stable release of this Ubuntu version on October 9th, 2025.

Ubuntu 25.10 will include sudo-rs
Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka will include sudo-rs by default as part of a plan to use more Rust-based core system components, such as the Rust CoreUtils “uutils” that will replace the standard GNU CoreUtils written in C. According to the MemorySafety blog, both sudo and su have been rewritten in Rust to ensure that they are memory safe, in comparison to the standard ones that are written in the 1980s.
Earlier, the Rust-based CoreUtils is used as part of a plan that allows Canonical to migrate from the older CoreUtils to the newer one to ensure memory safety. Although there is a drawback involving uutils’ bigger size in comparison to the GNU version, memory safety is more important. Because of this downside, it’s possible that the Docker containers may still use the traditional GNU CoreUtils.
Currently, sudo-rs is maintained by Trifecta Tech Foundation, which announced that Canonical confirmed the sudo-rs migration. This non-profit organization has also announced that this move was “part of a broader effort by Canonical to improve the resilience and maintainability of core system components.”
All this is part of the broader plan that will make sure that Ubuntu uses the Rust infrastructure.

Ubuntu 25.10 will use Dracut
While Ubuntu 25.04 is still ongoing development, there has been progress in switching from initramfs-tools to Dracut. Those tools both handle initrd generation for booting into the Linux kernel in preparation for the full system boot. The Ubuntu engineers are working hard to migrate such tool to Dracut to ensure better bootstrapping by reducing hard-coded logic as much as possible.
Initially, Ubuntu 25.04 would have used Dracut as the initrd generator, but the work wasn’t complete yet, so the Ubuntu engineers have delayed the migration to after Ubuntu 25.04 gets released so that the next version of Ubuntu uses Dracut completely.
However, you have an opportunity to try out Dracut in Ubuntu 25.04 when it gets released. This is so that you can provide feedback to the Ubuntu team about your experience with the Dracut integration.
Ubuntu 25.04 will be the last version that uses initramfs-tools as the default initrd generator, with the October release of Ubuntu being the first version that uses Dracut. This is going to be exciting news for the next year’s Ubuntu LTS release that will be out in the next April.
