  12. KDE Plasma 6.5 adds favorites to clipboard manager

This week, we have some of the new feature additions to the upcoming KDE Plasma 6.5 desktop environment. While some of those features that were added are interesting, we have a particular feature we want to give a shout out, because it increases productivity significantly.

This new feature that we’re talking about was turned from a 22-year old feature request that was reported in 2003 (while KDE 3.1 was the current desktop version) using the old KDE Bugzilla instance to fruition in KDE Plasma 6.5! The KDE Team has now considered this to be a new record for the oldest feature request ever implemented!

You can now add your commonly-pasted items to the starred items so that you can access them more easily than before. Not only that, but you can save them permanently so that you don’t lose them between sessions.

To star a clipboard item, drag your mouse cursor to a clipboard item that you wish to favorite, then press the star button to add it to your favorite clipboard items. This is similar to how Samsung’s keyboard clipboard “pinning” feature works in One UI.

To learn more about more features added and improved this week, you can consult the below page.

  13. KDE Plasma 6.5 shows the device connection notification

The upcoming version of KDE Plasma 6.5 has undergone many improvements under the name of polishing. Alongside the huge amount of improvements that we saw this week, according to the official blog post, one change felt worth mentioning.

Starting from KDE Plasma 6.5, a notification now appears when a USB device or any other device gets connected to your computer. This will help users know that the device has been recognized by the system, and the device name will be shown in the notification.

The notification was made for accessibility reasons, but it can also be used to troubleshoot issues related to the device connection. This simplifies the troubleshooting task for power users.

Those notifications are, fortunately, not intrusive, because the KDE team made it so that such notifications are not annoying. Not only that, but those notifications can also be turned off, leaving the sounds intact. Different sounds will be played, depending on the device connection state. If you don’t like such sounds, they can be turned off from the system settings.

This change has been made as part of the EU Directive 2019/882 compliance rules.

  18. KDE Plasma 6.5 no longer colors the 3rd-party app icons

The upcoming version of KDE Plasma 6.5 has undergone many improvements under the name of polishing. Alongside the huge amount of improvements that we saw this week, according to the official blog post, one change felt worth mentioning.

Starting from KDE Plasma 6.5, all third party application icons will no longer be provided with the default Breeze icon theme. The decision, which was labeled as complicated, stemmed from the fact that overriding the branding of those apps was considered “rude.”

In addition to that, the KDE Plasma team also showed a lack of interest and resources to maintain all third-party application icons in the Breeze icon theme, especially as applications may go through the process of rebranding, which means that icons are being changed.

However, the KDE team invites anyone who prefers the colored third-party icons on their Plasma desktop to create an icon theme that contains only those removed icons from this tree and to publish said theme to the KDE Store. This is possible, given that the KDE desktop environment is open source to begin with.

  23. KDE Plasma 6.5 brings quick settings toggles!

KDE Plasma 6.5 is an upcoming KDE desktop environment version that brings a ton of awesome features that make it easier to use than the current Plasma 6.4 desktop. This version is a promising release that will improve your Plasma desktop with many improvements and new features.

Last week, the team showcased the day/night theme switching for wallpapers where the desktop would automatically switch between day and night themes based on the time of the day in your location. This week, the KDE development team brought some of the most interesting changes that allow you to quickly configure your system right from the Settings app.

In the settings sidebar, pages in the System Settings app can now interact with the parent window, making quick toggles and other exported actions possible. This is to save time from having to go to a settings section to be able to, for example, turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Currently, this is only rolled out to Bluetooth settings, but, in future development iterations of Plasma 6.5, Wi-Fi and other settings should use this feature soon.

The pages can also mark themselves as “not relevant” when certain conditions for accessing the settings page are not met. For example, if a settings page requires certain hardware, and your PC doesn’t have it, that page will no longer be accessible. This saves time from having to go to a certain settings page when you discover that none of the options there are relevant for your PC.

KDE Plasma 6.5 will be released later this year, and it includes many bug fixes and general improvements that make your desktop more stable and reliable.

  28. KDE Plasma 6.5 has a Day-Night Cycle section in Settings

Night Light in KDE Plasma uses the day and night cycle to manage the scheduling for turning on the blue light filter in the nights and turning it off in the mornings. The day and night cycle consists of sunrise and sunset times in your region, and they differ from area to area. You can either select your region manually from the map shown, or automatically from the Internet.

Over time, various features in development for the upcoming KDE Plasma version are being worked on, such as dynamic wallpapers. This feature uses the day and night cycle that you’ve set up to automatically change the wallpaper based on the time of day. From the sunrise time, the wallpaper changes to the light version, and from the sunset times, it changes to the dark version.

As a result of introducing features that utilize the day and night cycle, its settings page has been moved to its own separate section to expose it more clearly and to emphasize the fact that it’s being used by different features other than Night Light.

Dynamic wallpapers and other features that depend on day and night cycle will be able to utilize the configured cycle times to allow a more dynamic experience on your desktop. To learn more about other changes, press this button.
