I relate to this so much; I also have the layer that I am #urban #metis and white in appearance with a #settler paternal heritage.
#Lateralviolence needs to stop. It was #colonialism that divided our people, not #Indigenous ourselves. -

My review of Francine Cunningham’s God Isn’t Here Today is up. https://www.cloudlakeliterary.ca/blogposts/book-review-god-isnt-here-today-by-francine-cunningham “Invisible Publishing and Francine Cunningham would like to send our thanks to Shantell Powell for their review of Francine's short story collection, God Isn't Here Today. To date, it's one of the few reviews that understood the tone of the work. We particularly loved the comp to John Waters!” #BookReview #Bookstodon #Indigenous @indigenousauthors #CanLit #ShortStories #IndigenousLit

Today's #Indigenous bookrave is for our cousins down south, Māori (Ngāti Porou and Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) poet Tayi Tibble. Holy, this is some badass poetry. In Poūkahangatus, Tibble gracefully balances contemporary life with narratives of a rich matriarchal lineage. A sense of the land is always present and invoked in ever-shifting (but always striking) images. If you ever have the chance to see Tayi Tibble in person, GO. She is funny and wise. #WritingCommunity #bookstadon #IndigenousLit

Another #Indigenous author and one of my all time favourite memoirs, Life Among the Qallunaat by Mini Aodla Freeman, Inuit from Cape Hope Island. Mini has led an extraordinary life as a nurse, translator and Elder. The writing style is really cool--a collection of short, linked stories--and Mini's sense of humour is 🔥🔥🔥. This book engages brilliantly with traumatic events while reminding readers that we aren't solely defined by our trauma. #bookstadon #WritingCommunity #IndigenousLit

I'm going to share some books by #Indigenous authors when I'm online, for folks who are interested. First up, Song of Batoche by Red River Métis author Maia Caron. This is an impeccably researched and powerfully written historical novel about the Métis. The character of Josette Lavoie drives the narrative, which gives readers a less common women's perspective into this story of madness, betrayal and love. #BogiReads from the archives: Whereas: Poems by Layli Long Soldier (reviewed in 2017) -
"a vast meta-awareness of language, poetry and words."

Absolutely breathtaking work. See my longer discussion on my book blog.
I thought I'd link it again today because this collection engages with the genocide of Indigenous peoples - among many other topics. But pls read any day.

Was writing out the six books to get to know me and realized that I was listing all the books that had a deep formative impact on me growing up. That's a different post. Adult!me has been/is imaginatively shaped by:
1. The Broken Earth trilogy
2. Lord of the Rings & Silmarillion
3. Oryx and Crake
4. Moon of the Crusted Snow
5. Cruel Optimism
6. New York 2140Yes, one's a theory text and there are a few trilogies but I stand by it.
