Quasit's Daily Book Recommendations: "The Door Into Summer" (1956) by Robert A. Heinlein
Age Range: 15 to adult
Genre: Science Fiction, Time TravelI first read "The Door Into Summer" in my early teens. It really •worked• for me, and I reread many times thereafter.
Daniel Boone Davis is an inventor, and a damn good one. Among other things he basically invents the Roomba, which is particularly impressive since this book was written in 1956. Heinlein described it in some detail; apart from some of the technology, he basically nails the functionality. And he has lots of other projects in the pipeline.
Unfortunately his partner decides to screw him out of the small company that they own. Davis ends up getting drunk in a bar with his cat Pete, otherwise known as Petronius the Arbiter.
Through a series of unfortunate events, Davis ends up drugged and shoved into frozen sleep—i.e. suspended animation—4:30 years, waking up in the far future: the year 2000.
[What do you ask after thirty years? Have they reached the stars yet? Who’s cooking up “The War to End War” this time? Do babies come out of test tubes? “Doc, do they still have popcorn machines in the lobbies of movie theaters?”
“They did the last time I looked. I don’t get much time for such things. By the way, the word is ‘grabbie’ now, not ‘movie.’ ”
“So? Why?”
“Try one. You’ll find out. But be sure to fasten your seat belt; they null the whole theater on some shots. See here, Mr. Davis, we’re faced with this same problem every day and we’ve got it down to a routine. We’ve got adjustment vocabularies for each entrance year, and historical and cultural summaries. It’s quite necessary, for malorientation can be extreme no matter how much we lackweight the shock.”
“Uh, I suppose so.”
“Decidedly. Especially in an extreme lapse like yours. Thirty years.”]Davis is broke, so he explores this strange new future and tries to find a job. Eventually he finds that someone apparently carried on his inventing work...someone who •seems• to be himself!
There's a lot more to the story; Heinlein was at the peak of his talent, and he was a master storyteller. But I won't spoil it for you. The only thing I'll mention, in passing, is that there IS a bit of a skeevy romance towards the end.
It's a time-crossed lovers thing. I don't think I got the whole creepy element as a young teen, but as an adult it did freak me out slightly.
Oh, one last point: in the book, Heinlein (Davis) invented the water bed—and described it in such detail that no one was ever able to patent it!
