  6. AI Is Not the Enemy. Misuse Is.

By Cliff Potts, CSO, and Editor-in-Chief of WPS News

Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines — April 25, 2026

Artificial intelligence is being treated by some people as if it is a demon hiding inside a machine.

    That is the wrong frame.

AI is not human. It is not a spouse, a friend, a minister, a therapist, or a family member. It should not be treated as a replacement for human connection.

But it can still help people survive moments when human connection is not available.

    That matters.

Grief does not wait for office hours. Panic does not wait for someone to answer the phone. Loneliness does not pause because the rest of the world is asleep.

In those moments, AI can serve as a sounding board. It can help a person organize pain into language. It can turn emotional static into sentences. It can help someone think clearly enough to make it through the next hour.

    That is not replacing people.

That is helping someone remain steady long enough to reach people again.

The real danger is not AI itself. The danger is misuse, dependency, manipulation, and pretending that a tool is a human relationship. Those concerns are real and should not be dismissed.

But the opposite mistake is just as dangerous.

If we treat every use of AI as isolation, we ignore the ways it can help people communicate better, remember more clearly, and process difficult situations without falling apart.

At its best, AI does not build a wall between people.

It builds a bridge between confusion and speech.

It helps people find the words they could not find alone.

    That is not a demon.

    That is a tool.

And tools, used wisely, can help human beings endure.

  8. Probably not the best time for me to be watching *The Pitt*. There’s a scene with a brother and sister in the ER with their dad, and a line about how they become the witnesses to each other’s lives — the ones who hold the shared memories.

    That one hit hard.

One of the hardest things right now is realizing I don’t have that anymore. Even though my brother and I hadn’t spoken in years, he was still my brother. He was already gone when Dad died, so I stood there without that shared witness to our life.

Yeah… this one’s getting put on hold for now. Too much, too soon.

I'd love to hear some suggestions for TV shows or movies that I could watch instead. I have most of the major streaming services.

  15. ”Tender is the night
In which I hold your memory
    A cloudless sky
Reminding me of what used to be

    There are no words
To describe a longing long lost
But after years of missing you
I would always pay the cost”

  16. Also I'd like to mention an another interesting project - Death Over Dinner (deathoverdinner.org/) it is an initiative launched in 2013 to spark conversations about death and end-of-life wishes over shared meals.

With over 100,000 dinners worldwide, it offers tools, prompts, a resource library (reads, watches, listens), and editions like Australian and Jewish.

Part of RoundGlass, it aims to normalize death talks, reducing suffering through communication.

  17. The subject of death should no longer be taboo, because death is a part of life. Do not ignore this important part.

“Our great-grandparents were told that babies were found under gooseberry bushes or cabbages; our children are likely to be told that those who have passed on… are changed into flowers or lie at rest in lovely gardens.” — Caitlin Doughty

  18. The task of an end-of-life doula is therefore not to improve the client’s condition in the moment, but to create a safe and comfortable space so that they can understand and live their feelings here and now: express them, cry, get angry.

Contact with an end-of-life doula can significantly improve the condition of the dying person and their loved ones.

They do not have personal relationships with their clients and will not unload their emotions on them, even if it is difficult for them.

To cope with their condition, doulas undergo supervision and many also undergo personal therapy.

  19. When a person experiences a tragedy, be it with themselves or with a loved one, an end-of-life doula can come to the rescue.

This is a person who knows how to support you, what words to say, how best to behave and how to accept the inevitable. This person also accompanies the family after the death of the loved one.

This person is not a doctor, they cannot prevent the inevitable, but they can help you deal with grief and loss.

A doula knows exactly what you may be experiencing, how to answer your questions and how not to make it worse.

    5. Helpful Scheduling Hotline: Even something as simple as canceling my grandma's care aide visits was made easier by the compassionate person on the after-hours hotline of Fraser Health Home Support. They were understanding and efficient, taking one less thing off my mind.

During these tough moments, the kindness of these individuals was a real comfort. It reminded me that even in the darkest times, there are good people who care.

I found the information from the BC Bereavement Helpline page should you also need other resources.

Connecting with others who understand can make a difference. Thank you to everyone who privately connected with me to express their condolences.

  21. #MondayMourning: It’s YOUR Grief

Grief is a very individual experience. There are so many factors that affect it, like your personality, support network, beliefs, previous losses, and the security you feel in other aspects of your life (financial, housing, relationships, work).

Don't use the grief experiences of others as a gauge for your own. Grieve in the way that feels comfortable to you, and don't worry if others think you're doing it too much or too little.
