  2. Also totally forgot to talk about this yesterday.
As a part of global accessibility awareness day, we put out a new update for the Be My Eyes app for Windows that is completely rebuild from the ground up. Along with giving us a better base to build amazing new features for desktop in the near future, this new app also fixes a lot of the accessibility issues that people have reported over the last 1.5 or so years.
In addition Chat History is now also available on Desktop, so you can start a conversation from mobile and continue it on desktop (and vice versa).

  4. It's that time of the year: Global Accessibility Awareness Day. Have you ever felt that you don't need accessibility features or any accommodations? We need to increase awareness on what these actually mean and why they make everyone's lives better!

Let's take an example. Are you wearing any visual aids like glasses or contact lenses? How about a temporary eyepatch after a surgery? Or maybe sunglasses to protect your eyes and help your sight when circumstances are not ideal? What about using reduced blue light and dark mode when you're struggling with headaches?

All of these are accommodations to meet accessibility needs. No matter if continuous, temporary or situational. There are tons more for you to go and find out about!

Let's stay curious for each other's needs, and that includes our own needs as well.

  5. For today's #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay (#GAAD), I just sent out a letter of support and call to action on behalf of CATO (the state college system's Committee for Accessible Technology Oversight, of which I am one of the two current co-chairs) to several groups within SBCTC (the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges), expressing our support for all of our state college's disabled students, staff, faculty, and the public communities we serve, especially in the light of recent and ongoing attacks on the disabled community and this year's updates to Title II of the ADA. Others are helping to pass it on to other councils and groups, and it will eventually be making its way to all of the SBCTC college presidents.

I'm really proud of it (I wrote the first draft, and most edits were additions to the call to action section, so most of it is still my wording). (And a little nervous too...it's kind of a big thing.)

    Happy GAAD!

  6. My #iPhone15Pro keeps running hot! sometimes, it gets so hot I can't even put it to my ear. I have to talk to whoever I'm on the phone with on speaker because it's just to hot to hold. thankfully though, that last part hasn't occurred in a while. the strange part is that #Voiceover has never informed me that my phone is to hot to use. To that end, I called #Appleaccessibility last night & the advisor I spoke with was extremely kind & helpful. She advised that I restore it, which I haven't done in a few months & now may actually be a good time since #WWDC2025 is coming up on 6/9/2025 & I'm one of Apple's faithful #BetaTesters. I love doing it & it helps create better software for all, since it has less bugs than it otherwise would, if no one in the disability community, especially, those of us who are #Blind, #VisuallyImpaired or #deaf-blind beta tests & reports bugs, Apple won't know where to focus its #Accessibility efforts, which I firmly believe we should all strive to help with, on this #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay! Everyone with any kind of disability should test this stuff. The more testers, the better the public release in the fall will be.

To that end, what's everyone's favorite cross-platform web browser? I'm seeking something which works across, #ApplePlatforms, #Android & #linux, speciffically, #Slackware, as I'm using #Slint which is a dirivitive of #Slackware, designed specifically for the #Blind & #VisuallyImpaired.

  10. Well, convincing admins of big instances to get onboard with the idea is an uphill battle, as you'd expect.

So maybe something like regular folks posting descriptions of the images they'd normally upload instead of the images themselves could be a good, arguably less impactful alternative?

  13. @Stefan Bohacek My contribution is my first image post in three months. As usual, I've described the image appropriately. This, however, led to me outdoing myself again.

The alt-text with the "short" description is precisely 1,500 characters long. The actual image description in the post is over 60,000 characters long. And I've had to limit myself in both cases.

Here's the post. Or try to find it under the hashtag #UniversalCampus if it has found its way to your instance.

  14. The above post is my contribution to World Sight Day in the Fediverse and Global Accessibility Awareness Day, just to show that I do describe my images, and that I do so in a way that I think is appropriate, considering how niche my images are. It is my first image post in three months.

There is only one image in this post, but with an alt-text of precisely 1,500 characters plus a long image description of 60,553 characters. That's more than 50% longer than my previous record.

I don't know how many hours exactly I've invested into describing this image. But I started writing the description on Monday. I missed some nice, sunny, warm days because I had to describe this image. I did the last edits today.

    Dadurch erreicht man Accessibility.

  16. Global Accessibility Awareness Day
