Four Corners has long been regarded as the ABC's flagship investigative journalism program – and often Australia's premier current affairs show.
Yet there are several strong arguments why it no longer fully deserves that top-tier status. -
@ecoscore Yeah, fair point. But let's be real: most of those outlets are niche, subscriber funded, or comedy shows scrapping for survival. The big players (Nine, News Corp, even the ABC at times) are too busy pulling punches, chasing clicks, or cosying up to power.
Then there's Friendlyjordies. Solo act. No corporate leash. He's out here dropping long form deep dives with actual receipts, digging into Angus Taylor's water rorts and breaking down the Liberals' slow motion suicide pact. Real research. Real footage.
It's not that the others aren't doing good work. It's that a YouTuber who's been firebombed and threatened for telling the truth is often the only one going full throttle on the rot, because he doesn't have advertisers or access to lose.
That's where Australian journalism is in 2026.
Still, respect to every indie holding the line. We need more of them. Not fewer. -
It's genuinely sad that in 2026 Australia, the only place doing real, no bullshit journalism is a youtuber.

All this has gained #friendlyjordies an online audience almost as big as some of the major TV channels—as well as a lot of enemies.
Before having his house firebombed (then doxxed on the evening news), he's faced lawsuits (civil & criminal), had numerous hit pieces against him in the corporate press, had numerous videos taken down, been subject to plenty of death threats, and had counter-terrorism cops surveilling him and then arresting his producer on bogus charges.
So after getting firebombed, what does he do now? Keep his head down?

Comedian, provocateur, YouTuber, muckraker & investigative journalist #JordanShanks (aka #friendlyjordies) had his house #firebombed a couple of months ago. A long list of powerful interests have plenty of motive, given his history of exposing #corruption & abuses of power in NSW politics. (NSW is an Australian state with 8m people, 5m in #Sydney.)
Shanks has targeted many of NSW's major industries: #coal, #banking, #construction, #media, #realestate, #gambling, #logging. He's been sued by a mining magnate #billionaire & a member of the state executive. He's exposed links between organised crime & the executive, shown how easy #moneylaundering is, triggered parliamentary questions about #NSWpolice abuses, & played a not-insignificant role in bringing down a popular premier & her deputy, almost causing a rift between the two parties that form a Coalition government in NSW. He's also covered corruption in federal parliament.
At times, he has been nasty, misogynistic, racist & ableist. He's unashamedly partisan (pro-ALP). But there's no denying that while still in his 20s he has become a significant figure in #NSWpol and #Auspol, whose influence has been felt across many fields.

Maybe you don't follow niche political content of the twists and turns of a drama unfolding over many months in a single state of a minor nation (0.3% of global population) on the far aide of the world, where a shit-posting 20-something YT stand-up comedian eventually brought down both top executive officeholders (premier and deputy premier) in a jurisdiction of 8 million people that all started by making some low-effort meme videos about their destructive environmental policies and snowballed until it encompassed dodgy anti-terrorism police, multiple court cases, organised crime, everyday corruption, the world's most powerful gambling lobby, #google getting sued, too many cheesy #nintendo references, and the firebombing of the comedian's house.
