Leaving aside the issue of propulsion system for the #ADF #submarine acquisition and what type of platform is really needed, there is only one major issue left. And that is can they be built on time and within budget. Arguably and regretfully, the answer appears to be a unanimous (from two ot the @AUKUS partners concerned) NO.

#ABC reporting on #UK House of Commons Committee inquiry into #AUKUS leaves a lot to be desired for those with an interest in Australian #Submarine acquisition plans. I guess that is to be expected from a ‘public’ digital platform concentrating solely on headline grabs and short and superficial texts. For those more into the details there are other places to look at. But I don’t known how deep the #Fedi interest runs or whether it is anything more than politically motivated with a progressive agendum.
So this toot is what it is, superficial and eseentially not very informative (all in keeping with the #Labor fixation on #Secracy where #Defence posture and capabilities are concerned).

“I’m a veteran of 20 years. War crime apologists don’t speak for us. Like many who have served, I was deeply shaken by the Brereton Report in November 2020. The war crimes detailed across its 530 pages—including the alleged murder of 39 Afghans by Australian Special Forces soldiers—were far worse than anyone expected.”
When I served, I was left in no doung as to my responsibility to uphold the Geneva Conventions, what is allowed in war and what is not, what is a lawful order and what is not. But Special Forces is another ‘breed’. Looking in from the outside, I always thoughs those ‘sandy’ and ‘green’ berets were the kind of soldiers who ‘bent’ the rules and challenged the notion of ‘well asjusted individuals’. Yet, I also was shocked by the Brereton Report in November 2020 and want justice to be served.

There has been numerous comments in the media about #Australia ‘s role in the sinking of an #Iranian frigate in the Indain Ocean by the #SSN #USS-Minnesota. While there is no denying that three #ADF members were aboard, there is no evidence that they acted in any way other than in accordance with their ‘Rules of Engagement’ (or Orders). This article wishes to cast doubt on this with the following argument:
”The Australians may not have been engaged in any ‘offensive conduct’ as part of the Minnesota attack, but no precise details have been given as to what role they played. What the author missed is that while all personnel aboard a submarine are critical in the running of the boat, there are three ‘watches’ on board and had ADF personnel been ‘on watch’ prior to engagment with the Iranian vessel, they could well have been relieved by US personnel from another watch prior to the dreadful (and potentially illegal) sinking of the ship and subsequent total disregard for the Conventions of War at Sea resulting in over 40 dead sailors of the allegedly unarmed vessel.
Just sayin’. Armchair generals ought not to be so specific in their arguments if these do not hold water (pardon the pun).

Defence spending has gone more opaque. Yet another example of this #Labor govt getting more secretive under the broad excuse of '#NationalSecurity'. Oversight of Defence procurement will now be the responsibility of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD) taking over from the Parliamentary Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit. The JSCD will be able to take in classified information and hence we can expect anything the committee hears and scrutinises will not be revealed publically. This is from ASPI (right-wing think tank, but valuable info nonetheless).

John Quiggin ‘s blog is a sad read indeed. It reaks of pessimism about Australia’s political landscape. Not without cause to be sure, and the faint hope of redemption laid on a stagnating #Greens penetration of the electorate isn’t giving me much hope. Nevertheless, I agree that #Labor is just about a lost cause and any move to put #ADF boots on the ground in support of the #MadKingDonald ‘s campaign in the #MiddelEast will be the final nail in the coffin afaiac. That will be the trigger for me to cancel my party m’ship to be sure.

Notwithstanding the US illegal #war, the sinking of an alleged unarmed vessel by a #US SSN, and a total disregard of the Geneva Convention with respect to survivors by the boat’s Captain, assigning any responsibility to trainee #ADF crew members on the SSN seems a lot like saying the cabin crew must be complicit in any aircraft crash that kills by-standers on impact (or the passengers for that matter). There’s a disconnect in this line of thinking. I’m not taking any position on this matter, just pointing a flaw in the opinions presented here.I can’t help but put myself in the ADF personnel’s shoes not knowing that the boat’s training cruise would turnout to be a combat ‘seek and destroy’ mission. Not much alternative but to stay put when underwater.
That the govt isn’t dealing with this US/Israeli aggression very well at all is a pity. But, it is what it is. We have no love for the #Iranian regime (though there is such a thing as self-determination and territoriality, even if Iran doesn’t respect that these rights also extend to Western Nations).
It’s a shit world…

There’s all this talk on #msm and free to air tv about Australian #ADF personel posted to allied platforms, the #SSN responsible for the sinking of an allegedly unarmed #Iran navy vessel off Sri Lanka in partcular. Let’s be clear. All ADF personel on deployments have ‘rules of engagement’ which guide their actions in the event of confrontations. Moreover, as stated by the PM, bilateral defence arrangements also come with such rules for serving ADF personel that would prevent them engaging in #combat operations with their hosting nation unless authorised by the Australian govt.
Many journos do not undestand this and keep asking the same questions…

So it has been reported through other news media outlets that two Australian defence members were on the US submarine that sank the Iranian ship we had been hearing about.
The government has been refusing to confirm if this is the case or not.
