En las tierras altas de Papúa, el pueblo Dani conservó durante generaciones una forma muy particular de honrar a sus ancestros: momificarlos mediante humo, calor y un cuidado constante que podía durar meses.
No lo hacían por exhibición ni por miedo a la muerte.
Para ellos, aquellas momias representaban memoria familiar, autoridad y continuidad espiritual dentro de la comunidad.La práctica consistía en secar lentamente el cuerpo usando humo de hogueras y calor controlado.
Después, el cadáver era untado con aceites animales y vegetales para ayudar a conservarlo.
El proceso podía prolongarse mucho tiempo y estaba reservado sobre todo para hombres importantes: jefes tribales, guerreros respetados o líderes espirituales.Las momias terminaban con la piel oscurecida y endurecida por el humo, los rasgos marcados y el cuerpo encogido por la deshidratación natural.
Muchas eran colocadas sentadas, en posición ceremonial, y permanecían dentro de las aldeas como presencia simbólica de los antepasados.Uno de los casos más conocidos es el de Agat Mamete Mabel, antiguo jefe de la aldea de Wogi, cerca de Wamena, en las tierras altas centrales de Papúa.
Según la tradición local, sus restos tendrían alrededor de 250 años y todavía siguen siendo cuidados por sus descendientes.Y eso es lo que más llama la atención.
Para mucha gente de fuera, ver una momia sentada en una cabaña puede resultar inquietante o incluso difícil de entender.
Pero para los Dani no se trata de algo macabro.
Se trata de mantener cerca a quienes ayudaron a construir la comunidad.Durante años, algunas de estas momias incluso eran mostradas en ceremonias importantes o durante visitas especiales.
Formaban parte de la vida cotidiana de la aldea, no como objetos, sino como ancestros cuya presencia seguía teniendo significado.Con el tiempo, la expansión del cristianismo, los cambios sociales y la presión del gobierno indonesio hicieron que la práctica desapareciera casi por completo durante el siglo XX.
Hoy ya no se realizan nuevas momificaciones tradicionales, aunque algunas de las antiguas todavía se conservan.También existe un debate delicado alrededor de ellas.
El turismo convirtió ciertas momias Dani en atracciones para visitantes extranjeros, algo que ha generado críticas y discusiones sobre el respeto cultural y la forma en que Occidente observa las tradiciones ajenas.Aun así, detrás de esas figuras ennegrecidas por el humo sigue existiendo algo profundamente humano: el intento de no romper el vínculo con quienes vinieron antes.
En un mundo donde todo parece olvidarse rápido, los Dani mantuvieron durante siglos otra idea de la memoria.
Sus ancestros no desaparecían del todo.Seguían sentados junto a ellos.
