  1. I like #TimescaleDB for storing time-based data...

...until I have to find a row by the given ID, which is 90% of the time.

In other words, I use TimescaleDB 10% of the time, and with that usecase, I literally don't use it at all because it adds another shit to worry about.

Once it works for both use cases, I'll may take a look on that.

  3. Hey @linuxfoundation here is a plan under #California law #AB1043:

Sell a standarized, audited compliance module (libagesignal) to corpos. Put an #opensource "Age Signal API" standard. Sell signed the binaries and certification.

I'll bet corpos will lobby the hell out the law.

  5. So, libxml2 developer fed up with the lack of commitment from Google, Red Hat and Amazon.

A library used by Chrome, Windows, macOS, iOS, Linux, and most tech stacks in the world: now abandoned.

Seems that the only way to force big corpo to care is to offer an AGPLv3 version and a commercial version.

    gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libxml2

To me, that should be the base standard.

  7. It's time guys, GNOME is good but...

...if you want GNOME to be great, there is a donation button that links to here:

    donate.gnome.org/

I'll donate to GNOME any time of the day as long they don't spend 40% of the budget for inclusive bathrooms.

  9. My FOSS laws:

    1. You can ask, but not demand.
    2. You can help, but not enforce.
    3. You can critic, but not rant.
    4. You can compare, but not disparage.
    5. You can compete, but not sabotage.

That should be the guidelines for any FOSS discussion.

Thank you for an article to shows both the problem and shows a possible solution and prevention.

We all can see problems and a lot of authors have become good at describing the problems.

We need more folks like you that also work on and describe solutions.

    #democracy is more than voting.

  13. The inherent value of FOSS is not only getting it for "free" and the "freedom" of doing whatever you want with it.

It's also maintaining it for "free".

If you cannot maintain it, then offer your ideas so it can be enhanced or fixed with the least amount of hindrances for the maintainers to understand.

If you can't do both, shut the fuck up.

  15. Not me writing a bunch of new disclaimers and warnings on my website as I encounter more and more folks (not on here! In other discussions!) that have never done DIY software and computing and are diving in with my very-imperfect implementation of an installation ISO Linux build.

Again - not on Mastodon. If you're on Mastodon, you've certainly embraced using software that is not corporate packaged or polished (for better or worse).

When you start getting the "Hey asshole, you bricked my machine!", it really does make you reconsider hosting and supporting a FOSS project.

There's a specific mindset and paradigm of interacting with FOSS. It's very DIY, accept consequences of failure, adaptation, troubleshooting, etc.

But folks are used to the "client / server" paradigm of consumerism. Something is made. Someone buys it with expectations. If it doesnt work, they can return for moneyback, if it really doesn't work they can sue, etc.

Like. Don't get me wrong. I am doing my best to build in accessibility and ensure quality in what I'm making, but I'm also not forcing anyone to try and install this.

I can only imagine how folks working on FOSS medical equipment feel. That can actually kill people (corporate products kill people all the time, too, but they're protected by Limited Liability Corp structures).

Anyhow... hope I don't get sued.

  17. @derekmorr
    True.

Also true is that #facebook, #whatsapp, #instagram and #twitter are "real world systems". They are all centralized, from the US and once they imposed their reign they f*** everything up.
"Be fast and break things .. dumbf***!"

So yes, when it comes to #privacy and #democracy I'm all about purity and ethics, #decentralization, #freeOpenSource and #openGovernment.

    That's basics and not negotiable.

You know how the saying goes:
    Fool me once ..
    Fool me twice ..

<!-- written in "i" like italic irony -->

    #tragedyOfTheCommons

While installing #freeCAD on this #ubuntuStudio LTE setup I realized again that the result of the commons are really tragic. After downloading and installing that #freeopensource program from the repo in a glimps of an eye, opening it for a first time my mind was confronted with a simple first page without popups, advertisement of more addons to buy or little dogs that jump around whipping with their tail.

I have to admit, I'm confused, my tictoc trained mind that can't concentrate for more than 45 seconds anymore has no clue what to do and went into kernel panic mode.

    help!

  22. I recommend to everyone that they contribute at least with data (if not able with donations as well) to @openstreetmap and/or @organicmaps

It is an absolute rush of euphoria and joy to see the map changing through your efforts! The almost "treasure-hunt" like experience of trying to find as much info about the place you are adding as possible is my favourite part though. Feels like active #OSINT work!

PSA: If you're someone who uses, creates or cares about , free open source software, please be aware of the European Cyber Resilience Act. It could have dire consequences to the FOSS community.
