  1. Trying to dive in and understand the 19,000 line file of VB.net and I'm getting nothing at all because 1) it's 19000 lines of VB and 2) The plumber is here at the house and my brain can't let that go even for a second.

  5. I finally got what passes for guidance from my new team at work.

They haven't packaged any of their libraries. They're all set with local references.

So I download a project. It won't build because I didn't download this other project.

    So I download a project...

It's all one ugly chain-compiled ball of burning garbage.

  15. I open-sourced the status dashboard I use to watch my cloud vendor stack.

The backstory: I audited my old monitoring script this summer and found four separate ways it reported green when it was wrong. The worst one fetched Microsoft's status endpoint, discarded the response, and returned a hardcoded "Operational." It had passed every casual glance for months.

The rewrite is built around a single rule: an unverifiable status is unknown, never operational. Null payload, changed vocabulary, bot wall, network error, whatever. If the check didn't verify anything, the row doesn't get to be green.

It polls 46 SaaS and cloud vendors' own status pages every 15 minutes (Okta and IBM don't publish real APIs, so those adapters were archaeology), runs on a $5/month Cloudflare Worker with zero runtime dependencies, and answers the oldest question in IT: is it them or is it me?

The repo ships with every adapter pinned against recorded vendor payloads, six merge-blocking CI gates, and an OpenSSF Best Practices badge at passing. There's a one-click Deploy to Cloudflare button if you want your own board with your own vendors.

    Code:
    github.com/bjgreenberg/vendor-

    Live board:
    briangreenberg.net/service-sta

Apache-2.0. Fork it, swap in your vendor list, done. Let me know what you think.

  21. If you were teaching someone new(ish) to coding a bit of Python as part of a larger codebase they would need to reference/navigate... what editor* would you start them out on? Something that does all the nice auto-completion, the navigation to definition and use points, possibly even built-in documentation**.

    * I am a vi*** user, and whilst I did once have a bit of editor-religion, I don't really care any more... and realistically I feel like I don't want to push a non-coder into the viverse... it feels... sadistic?

** Yes, I do have all these featues and more in my nvim setup, but that doesn't change my view on it being sadistic 😆

*** I mean, I can survive in oldskool 'vi', but realistically a vim user for 2+ decades, albeit more recently have switched to nvim (seems to have been a fairly painless transition, but I do miss some of my old config, and not really got my head around neovim config yet.)
