Hi friends! You're probably reading this after attending the Fatphobia in SFF panel at Balticon 60. Or maybe you stumbled onto this post while doing research about the subject. I wanted to provide my notes from the event in a simple post for those who want more context, thinking material, or further reading. I'm just simply dropping this in for now and wi

Cool." But the moment you tell them you're the slightest bit overweight suddenly they're very worried about your health.

  7. Medical contradiction. In the same conversation about a transplant the surgeon stated that the heavier you are the less healthy you are and wont survive sugery, then said that heavier people make better donors than thin people due to the quality of their organs.

All this says to me is that surgeons are not competent to work on fat patients and want them to die to give their organs to the chosen thin people, who are not healthy

  8. Notice how when 'people' are trying to weight shame someone online they always use "300lbs" as the supposed insult? I can only assume that these idiots all use the same number because they are braindead drones who can't think for themselves.

  9. So much ableism and fatphobia from the left. Mama, not mine but someone else's somewhere said that people only go after someone's appearance or disabilities during conflict if they don't have anything important to say. And we have mountains of important things to say that shouldn't really include double chins and diapers. The end.

  11. Oh I am, well, pissed is maybe an overstatement, but I am for sure feeling some kind of way.
Once again some grown ass man accosted me verbally about my weight in public, making piggy sounds at me from behind me, on my way *to* the shop I figured hey i probably misheard maybe he was clearing his throat or something don't think too much on it, but the guy was here on the way back from the shop too, and this time he did it louder and for longer and like, at that point any alternative explanation just goes out the window.

Yes my good dude I am a fat white woman with an upturned nose, but I still think I should be able to exist in public without being yelled at or have some other abuse thrown at me. Just like I think everyone should be able to.

It's frustrating because this does happen with some regularity, and it's always the same genre of people too. Teen to early 20s women in groups of two or more, or, much more often, 20s-30s very fashionable and conventionally handsome men.

It's incredibly frustrating having that shit just come out of no where.

  13. we should treat the thin fetishists who try and get their partners to lose weight with the same disgust as we treat the fat fetishists who try and get them to gain weight

  14. Can't really put into words how repulsive this attitude I encountered last night is. Imagine viewing fat and conventionally unattractive people as so fundamentally subhuman that you can't even imagine *them* liking themselves.

  16. [P] I guess I should bring up Themberchaud since I've been talking about D&D. Is Themberchaud in Honor Among Thieves fatphobic? To any progressive, the answer is obviously yes. Is it because Themberchaud is fat? No. D&D's history is resplendent with badass portly dragons, there's art and depictions of that in lots of older stuff. Even of Themberchaud himself. But HAT made him ridiculous just for being fat—fat was the punchline. It was an intentional choice.

  17. [P] Hasbro sees D&D 5e as a commercial flop, so they're pulling more money out of WotC to pump it into their wunderkind, Magic: the Gathering. They see M:tG as their only real moneymaker in the fantasy space, so their last ditch effort is to turn D&D into a licensing brand. What I really want is for WotC to sell D&D after the licensing initiative fails (which it will). That's the only hope I hold for D&D's future.

  19. [P] I want actual progressiveness in D&D. Give me a fat, good, culturally gay dragon, you cowards. I'd love that as an.important poster character for D&D. We won't ever get that, though, because D&D is mired in right-leaning traditionalist regressivrness. The players often (often!) try to fix that, but it shouldn't be our job. It just makes me want a better game to replace D&D. And I might not have long to wait, frankly...

  21. [P] I recall 2e/3e dragons being so chonky because being fat wasn't always a sin in D&D. It feels like things should get more progressive with time. I mean, granted, they've made some superficial passes at LGBTQ+, but I see that as corporate cynicism as they've never gone all in with that support. A character being coded omnisexual doesn't give them authentic gay/lesbian culture, BG3 had not a single actual gay, just omnisexual straights.

  23. [P] This isn't new for WotC, either.

    buttondown.com/TayoWrites/arch

Apparently Larian was so upset with WotC's tampering that they've sworn they'll never make another D&D game. I don't think fantasy should be anything-phobic, but WotC is fatphobic on the regular. I want to say this started around mid-4E from what I remember, and it's juat gotten worse since then. It's really put me off D&D. Doing it to the dragons was the last straw.

  25. [P] I still can't forgive WotC for bringing American beauty standards—of all the vile things—to Dungeons & Dragons, where good has to be anaemic. The new gold dragon is now a poster-child for vomit-don't-eat while evil dragons get chonkier. Typical. It makes me want a progressive European replacement for D&D. 5.5e broadcasts "Good people aren't fat! Baddies are!" with SO much of its art, it isn't even just the dragons. WotC has a problem.

  27. #Fatphobia is unacceptable in every form. Even if you're mocking Trump. Hating on someone’s body to criticize their actions does more harm than good.

Spoiler: You don't need to hurt millions of people in a side comment just to make a piece of shit look bad. #justsaying

  28. GLOW (2019) #TVshow #fatphobia #FatphobiaInEntertainment

In one of the last episodes there is a conversation between two characters:

J: “I had to spend an evening with boring Billy!”

S: “Oh yeah? How is Billy?”

J: “Fat! I mean, he still looked cute, but he definitely put on a few pounds.”

This one hurt me extra hard, because I absolutely love love love GLOW. The show has several fat characters and it is so refreshing that their bodies are never used as a joke or something to mock. So this completely unnecessary comment stung. Sigh.

  29. Maebashi Witches sets a new standard for tackling fatphobia

A christmas-themed episode where somebody says (the American) Santa Clause is a walking billboard for the country’s obesity.

  32. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) #movie #FatPhobia

One of the main characters is a fat boy. He gets fostered and when he first meets his ‘auntie’, she gives two or three remarks about him being fat.

For example, she asks “Would you like a cookie?” and then immediately follows up with “Of course you would, I mean, look at you”.

It is really annoying, because the auntie character is actually good to him and there is no other remark about his body in the whole rest of the movie. It could have just been a movie with a fat kid in a leading role and him just existing. But no, they had to ruin that …

  33. Uglymug, Epicfighter – Episode 1

The only ugliness to be found is in Shigeru’s volcel actions and this premiere’s treatment of his body and physicality.

  34. [P] If you really want to understand why I think the new design for 5E's goodest of boys (gold dragons) is fatphobic? Observe the examples.

Old is on the left; New on the right.

"Gold goes from chonky to thin! To be good is to be slim!"

Yes. I know. Lung. But they could've created an entirely new awesome lung dragon for this, or chosen a priorly sinuous dragon. Like it or not, this makes a very unpleasant statement.

    I miss chubby golds. :C

  36. CW: fatphobia, patriarchy, personal but Boosts ok <3

I mentioned I'm fat a few times recently.

I'm not particularly invested in fat liberation, and I'm not that fat. But talking about it, feeling ok in my skin, and being able to safely explore my feelings about my body is nice, and a direct result of being a trans lesbian and a shift in my life that transition allowed.

Queer women are not free from fatphobia, we are not perfect saints on this sinful Earth, in this way or any other.

But I've seen how straight men talk about women vs how queer women talk about women. I'm able to be me in broadly queer female circles and not have to assume by default I'll have to defend my existence or decisions or body or anything.

I'm still exploring how much that safety means to me. Until very recently, I wasn't even aware there's things to explore.
