  1. @APBBlue Yes. I was about to congratulate them on the more accessible cycle racks, but instead of being about accessibility to disabled cyclists, I should have known it was about accessibility to abled parents.

Nevertheless, it seems like a cool train. Different from the ones I saw in Czechia. #CycleParkingAudit #Accessibility #BikeTooter #Train

  2. @geodarcy I always recommend that those who cycle to Costco and find insufficient and/or inaccessible racks leave a customer note card for them to let them know you're a cycling customer and want more/better racks.

The Costco near me has a counter with the customer feedback cards right near the Customer Service Desk. You just fill it out and put it in the slot.

Car drivers never cease to complain about car parking...it's time cyclists speak up about cycle parking, IMO.

    Have a good one!

  3. @PatrickRerat I'm sighted, but I want to make sure that folks who are low vision or blind can get what sighted folks get out of the image in your toot.

Blind/low vision folks do cycle (Anna Zivarts is a good example) and the subject might be of interest even if they do not.

Thanks for considering making your communication as accessible as possible.

  4. @ascentale @bikenite A8. These were 180 degrees from one another so I could not fit it into one shot.

Using an upright bike as "curb appeal", something I find VERY common for businesses in a number of countries. Here, the fake bike has pride of place near the entrance where ordinarily you'd put a cycle rack.

To the other side, you see what infrastructure there is for parking actual non-decorative upright bikes.

This is the first time I've ever seen a rack like that. I wonder what the thought behind it was, other than perhaps requiring a little less concrete/space than a U-rack or Sheffield rack? #BikeTooter

  6. @MarkBrigham @ascentale @bikenite Yes. I seem to recall reading that South Korea has a cycle path that had solar shading.

Putting solar around cycle parking and paths to create shade and generate energy makes sense, but there are definitely problems with theft in some contries where scrap dealers are not held accountable for buying copper they *know* was pulled out of public lighting, etc.

  7. @ascentale @pete @bikenite A5. This is regarding my herd before I had to move. When I arrived at UC Davis, the cycle racks were inaccessible yet they'd ticket/impound if your cycle was not parked at their racks. I arrived first thing in the morning to get an end spot - the only place my recumbent had a chance. Some upright rider SHOVED their bike in where they should not have, made my bike fall off its kickstand, bending the water cage and breaking the power button for the e-assist. Unfortunately, it remained broken the entire time until I sadly had to sell my herd.

  8. @plactagonic There's something called the "curbcut effect" where abled people ALSO benefit from and use accessibility that disabled people fought for. The trick is getting abled people to join us in that fight while it's going on instead of simply riding coattails.

Saw two different "artistic" cycle racks posted today and just hit my patience limit. :)

Good ol' Sheffield rack pretty much can't be beat, in my opinion. It needs to be combined with good spacing, good siteing, and good anchorage, but as far as the design of the rack itself, it is the one accessible to the most different kinds of cycle frame designs.

  9. When I see abled cyclists I know see my posts about accessibility say that an inaccessible rack is "cool", I get overwhelmed by what an uphill battle it is fighting ableism in cycling (and ableism in general).

  10. Besides the terrible design of the wheelbender rack and its terrible placement as a barrier, there's also the fact that it's providing parking where there's hardly any demand for it.

There are tons of places all over the city that badly need racks. You can see from how many cycles are locked to improvised places. But here, there's no big destination people are going to. There are some apartment buildings and construction sites nearby. Even the few businesses on this boulevard are blocks away. Yet for some reason there's a long rack here. 🤔

There are more racks in the middle of nowhere on this boulevard as well.

  11. Rode this 2-way cycle lane this morning and got a great illustration of car-centric urban planning. I doubt the person who designed this cycles nor even walks except from the car parking place to a door.

This lane just ended. On the right is the wider pedestrian route (peds prefer to walk on the cycle lane for some reason), which ends in --- an underground parking entrance ?!

There is a curb everywhere it ends and a wheelbender rack blocking one end. That's a barrier to me on a recumbent trike with no suspension that has already had issues from me going over a tall curbcut. No curbcuts here, either.

Dirt "desire line" made by both peds and cyclists to take them out of this trap. #Albania #CarCentrism #BikeTooter #CycleParkingAudit

  12. I always prefer individual racks like these over a corral. These ones are at the Akin building, Lake City, Seattle.

  13. @JustFi Because after your cycle's wheel is bent in that rack, you will be using your feet to take you and your cycle home (if you have working legs/knees/ankles/feet to do so...) #CycleParkingAudit #BikeTooter

  14. @ADFC @ADFC_BW Adding hashtags to help you find respondents (I'm a disabled cyclist, but not in Germany.)

For those who find this toot, look up at the original post.

  15. @jessta This is precisely the kind of comparison I used to do on the birdsite under the hashtag #CycleParkingAudit

I still use that hashtag here, but I haven't had the time to do the satellite maps and parking space counts I used to. #BikeTooter #CarCentrism

  16. @daihard @ascentale @bikenite Adding #CycleParkingAudit to this photo of what I call a "clothes hanger rack".

Congrats that the kid prefers to cycle and prefers you to cycle too!

  17. @ascentale @bikenite @ucaccessnow A4, cont'd: What could be improved: The racks need to be installed farther apart so that two fat riders of two trikes with panniers attached could be locking up at the same time without rubbing up on one another. The rack installation could also use a shelter from sun and rain (it doesn't really snow at that location, but for places with snow, the shelter needs to be designed for snow as well).

Another improvement would be having an accessible cycle tool installation, water fountain, accessible map of cycle routes nearby, and safe & accessible e-cycle charging infrastructure.

    #CycleParkingAudit #UCAccessNow #BikeNite

  18. @ascentale @bikenite @ucaccessnow A4. cont'd. They went on to ban e-cycles and e-scooters from inside buildings, even if they are folding. So having accessible safe and sheltered racks is even more important, but they largely resisted UC Access Now's rack initiative and buried credit when they did make some of the changes we suggested in a "pilot program".

Despite this, organizations like League of American Bicyclists continue to give UC Davis a "platinum bike-friendly" rating, allowing them to sweep any criticism under that award.

Below is a photo of a one of the "pilot projects" they did without ever consulting us to catch problems in the design. It's an improvement, but needs more. And is rationed out - which means abled cyclists who don't need the room often take it because - SURPRISE - it's better parking than the default. #CycleParkingAudit #UCAccessNow #BikeNite

  19. @ascentale @[email protected] @bikenite A4. I have made a study of cycle racks for about 15 years now. I have hundreds & hundreds of photos of the good, the bad, and the ugly. So many it's hard to find the best and the worst without dedicating more time to going through things than I have today. I have not found the perfect cycle rack anywhere. I would add that there are also racks on buses, trains, trams, etc. that should also be addressed as the accessibility problem is even worse than street parking.

So I'm going to show the rack that ruined my health and was the final straw that made me start @ucaccessnow UC Davis rules threaten ticketing and impounding if your cycle is NOT parked at their inaccessible racks. Despite this, they keep getting "bike friendly" awards that allow them to resist activism for accessible and safer cycling infrastructure.

Upright cyclist later shoved in and broke my bike.

  20. @ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A2 cont'd. My impression is that in the high cycle theft cities, brute force is still the most common attack, despite the fact that lockpicking sport seems to be skyrocketing in the US. Portable angle grinders are the tool of choice AND in the UK and US, the thieves also use the tool as a weapon to threaten any passers-by or cycle owners who are trying to stop them from stealing.

So I focus on choosing something angle grinder resistant and I also choose more than one kind of lock/layers of security so if someone generally uses one tool, there's still another lock that would require a different tool to break. Having more than one kind (U-lock, chain, etc) also gives flexibility in what one is capable of locking up to and how. #BikeNite #CycleParkingAudit #UCAccessNow

  21. @ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A2. I think there's not a one size fits all recommendation. Depends on the bike frame geometry, what the cycle rack or other infrastructure you'd lock to where you're using it, your physical capabilities, and your resources for replacing the cycle should it get stolen.

For me, this meant getting very heavy Kryptonite and other motorcycle and construction equipment chains because I could not easily afford to replace my rides and because it is harder for someone with a portable angle grinder to manage holding the chain safely while cutting it. Because of inaccessible racks, I needed a LOT of meters of chain to have flexibility. It was heavy as shit and inconvenient, but less inconvenient than my ride being stolen.

I watched Lockpicking Lawyer videos and cycle vlogger videos to decide what to do & which brand/models to trust. Recently I came across this site as well:

  22. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] A4: The best: Racks in front of Swanson's Nursery in Seattle (left). One of the worst: The rack at Fishermen's Terminal in Seattle (right). I could swear I've seen worse ones than this. I must not have taken the pictures!

  23. @MartyCormack @ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite Back when Storify was a thing, I had a whole Storify documenting how the same places that would tell me as a fat woman that I "need to exercise more" had shitloads of car parking spaces and no accessible cycle parking (or cycle parking at all).

  24. @ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite A1. I can't see the post to see what kind of rack it is, but if you feel you won't get in trouble for some tactical urbanism, and the rack isn't a design that would likely hurt people, I think you'd be doing a service if you picked it up and deployed it somewhere people should be encouraged to go by cycle, but might not be due to an absence of locking infrastructure. #BikeNite #BikeTooter #CycleParkingAudit
