  1. I do shift position on the bike, getting out of the saddle occasionally, often a necessity on some of the hills around here.

A nurse suggested previously that being hairy is a cause of the problem, and that waxing would stop it recurring. I'm not quite sure I'm ready for that.

GP recently suggested that a residual lump from previous occurrence could act as a trigger point, and might be worth removing in the future.

  2. I almost always wear cycling shorts with a chamois pad; usually bib shorts, sometimes non-bib shorts under another layer. I don't wear anything underneath.

They get washed after every use, except when commuting when they're hung in the drying room and worn for the return journey.

I use some kind of chamois cream, but now usually Doublebase (medical-grade emollient), based on research by British Cycling.

  3. I ride gravel bikes, mountain bike and (for shame) an indoor trainer. I had a bike fit done a few years ago, copied the measurements across bikes where applicable, but I think I know what feels right. Nothing else about my riding position gives me problems.

Obviously, I've got older, but I think I'm generally stronger and fitter than I used to be.

  4. Following-up my own question with further info and answers:

It's an infected cyst, between my legs, kind of towards the centre from the pressure points. Sometimes a small infected lump develops and goes away by itself. Sometimes it gets slightly bigger and antibiotics are required. Once (🤞) it required surgery: incised and drained; the wound left open so it heals from the inside out to reduce the likelihood of further cysts.

  5. @[email protected] @[email protected] A8: It was chilly and cloudy in the morning but turned into a gorgeous afternoon. The picture shows Lake Union in Seattle.

  6. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] A3: I have a similar problem with my right toe, though in my case, it's a pain on the middle toe. It happens only after I ride up a long steep hill, and it never happens to my left toe. I've been wondering if my right foot is a bit bigger than my left, and if yours is, too? #BikeNite #MastoBikes

  7. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] A1a: From Seattle, WA. I'd been having a calm and peaceful week until I saw the announcement of the new Trek Domane. I know I've got a fairly new bike, but the N + 1 theory suddenly looks very attractive... 😅 #BikeNite #MastoBikes #BikeTooter #Trek

  9. And our last question this week as usual: your week in a photo.

Q8. What did you see this week? Reply with a photo if you'd like. Cycling related or not is fine. Tell us about it! Bonus points if it's something that made you smile.

  10. @esnyder asks:

I've been riding a Yuba SpicyCurry long tail e-cargo bike for about 4 years now. I love it, except for how locked down the Bosch electronic system is.

I want to be able to buy spec compliant batteries, chargers, computers, motors from different vendors that all interoperate, and I'd like to know how best to contribute to making that possible.

Q7. Are there existing organized efforts to push for open standards in ebike systems?

I see stickers advertised with a "speed camera" sign, for instance

Q6. Has anyone used them, and observed any objective change in the behaviour of motor vehicle operators around them?

  12. @wtrmt needs help learning about bicycle repairs:

We've been spending a lot of money changing inner tubes for our bikes lately. We've two folding bikes, and ride 20km or more daily, on rough city streets, with plenty of potholes and all sort of damaging debris.

Q5. If you do this kind of work, can you point me to a good resource on how to change an inner tube without damaging the new one, and what kind of minimal kit should we take to accomplish it efficiently on the road?

  13. @hazz223 asks:

Been looking at retrofitting my push bike with an electric motor. What I've discovered is that todo this costs almost as much as just buying a new bike... Which is nuts!

£500 for a kit i would install at home, compared to £600 for a bike with it all done professionally + warranty.

Q4. Anyone got any tips or suggestions for e-bike conversions?

(When is it worth it to do a conversion rather than purchase an e-bike?)

  14. @Derek_DIY asks:

No matter witch saddle I use, my toes on the right foot get numb after approx. 30 - 45 minutes ride.

I am more the skinny type btw.

Q3. Do you have any tips on how to avoid this?

  15. @paul_edwin asks:

After ~50 years of trouble-free cycling, I seem to have recently become the sort of person who's prone to abscesses. My GP says it might just be a "phase" I'm going through. I think I'm doing the obvious right things.

Q2. Has anybody else been in that situation? What's worked for you, either for prevention or dealing with the problem once it occurs?

  16. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] A7: A key element, which I suspect a lot of small business owners overlook, is bike parking. If a business wants to have customers arrive by bike, they must provide safe bike parking one way or another.

    #BikeTooter #BikeNite #MastoBikes

  17. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] A6: Sorry to hear that. I too suspect it's a very common type of injury for people cycling. I fractured my right collarbone when I fell hard on my bike about 11 years ago. Knowing I'm a cyclist, my surgeon strongly recommended I have surgery to put the bone back in place instead of letting it heal by itself. I'm glad I did. Best of luck for your swift recovery.

  18. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] A3: I'm neither—I have a kindergartner (soon to be a 1st grader) who bikes to school. She learned to ride a two-wheeled bike back in May. She loved it so much, she wanted to ride her own bike to school instead of being carried on the back of my cargo bike. I loved that!

Her school (K-8) doesn't have its own bike-to-school program, but a lot of students bike.

  19. @[email protected] @[email protected] I've had a go in a few velomobiles over the years, but most people's are far too big for me.

I have spent the last couple of years learning to ride a streamliner racing bicycle - same principle of being completely enclosed in an aerodynamic shell as a velomobile, but two-wheeled (which makes it faster and better at cornering than a three-wheeler) and difficult to get in and out of without assistance, so completely impractical to ride on the road.

It's insanely fast once you get moving, though. I managed to average over 30mph for the two hour race
at the WHPVA championships at Sittard last month, and I'm still unfit after a year of hardly any cycling. Nearly died on the hill-climb, though: Unlike the road-going velomobiles, I don't have low gears for climbing, so the only way to get up the (short but steep) hill was to attack it at full sprint and hope I could carry enough momentum to stay upright.

I know people who use velomobiles as touring machines and practical forms of transport. They're particularly good for long flatish rides, in all weathers, and lower maintenance than a bike with an exposed drivetrain. Luggage capacity varies. And of course the drivers notice you and pay attention even more than they do for recumbent bikes/trikes.

  21. @streetmeme asks:

Q7. How can small businesses build a clientele with diverse transportation modes?

Some business owners oppose bike lanes, bus lanes, and street safety improvements; some claim that the loss of parking will be fatal for their business, despite studies showing that business activity generally increases after such projects.

Given that urban street design philosophy in many US cities is finally prioritizing safety and multimodal transportation, what can businesses do to prepare for that future?

(Relatedly, what good outreach can be done by people who cycle to preemptively address these fear of losing business?)

  22. @ascentale @uxMark @bikenite I love my #brompton ! Tips: run the tires at high pressure, they can handle it and you’ll get fewer flats and have more fun. A front bag is super useful (took mine off for this ride, but it’s almost always on the bike). Practice folding and carrying before you tackle public transit 😅 #bikeniteq #BikeNite #BikeTooter #cycling #mastobikes

  23. @puercomal asks:

I crashed my bike and broke my collarbone, apparently it’s very common for cyclists.

Q6. Any stories to share or advice about recovery?

  24. Q5. Do you ever have an issue with bike gloves, where they are uncomfortable because they fit too tightly in the gap between your fingers?

Is there a way to fix this?

  25. @uxMark asks a question that is making me feel a little jealous!

Now that I’m a Brompton owner, I’m more-often noticing Brompton riders in the responses here or in posts from folks I follow.

Q4. For Brompton and other folding bike vets, what are some special tips for newbies that you could share? For other new riders, what’s your experience been like? Also, please share photos 😀🚴‍♀️❤️

  26. @Amgine asks:

In northern hemisphere, we are entering the harvest season, and school will be starting soon.

Q3. If you are a student, what do you think about bike-to-school programs? Are your adults involved with one? Is this a good, a bad, or just not a, part of your life?

If you are a post-high / post-secondary school student, do you bike to/on campus? were you or your family part of a bike-to-school thing at previous levels of education?

    #BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite

  27. Q2. Have you ever ridden in a velomobile? An electric one? What is it like to ride? Are they practical at all?

I've seen a couple on the used market now from companies that appear to have failed. One example is the ELF, an e-velo with a solar panel on its roof: veemo.ca/blogs/articles/elf-so

And a PEBL, which looks similar to me: better.bike/models

Both of these were available in the $1k-$2k USD range, a huge discount from their original retail. They both seem interesting, but are maybe more of a curiousity than practical transportation.
