My road bike at home has an issue with shifting, I don't know if the cable is bad (most likely), the shifter is broken or if it's something else.
The road bike I'm provided this week on tour has electronic shifting, which is intriguing since I go through shifter cables once or twice a year.
Q: What are the pros and cons of electronic shifting versus cable shifting?

Question for #bikenitepq : Are there any current or former professional bike mechanics on the Fediverse that would be interested/willing to share insights about the profession? What was your professional journey like? Any warnings/advice for someone considering a career change into the profession? Would getting a certification from an organization like the United Bicycle Institute be worthwhile?

@ascentale @bikenite What has been your experience with fully housed vs. exposed/partially housed cables?

Wouldn't the exposed portion be a pathway for water/dirt to enter the cable housing?

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNitePQ I changed a cassette recently to one with a different spread of gears and while working fine it just feels plain wrong. How picky or sensitive are you to changes in bike setup, whether that be size/fit or components-related?

BikeNite Potential Question: There are municipal elections in Ontario, and cycling advocacy orgs are doing "Rides with the Candidates". Have you done a "Ride with a Candidate"? Does it do any good? That is, are candidates who go on these rides more likely to vote for cycling initiatives after going on a ride?

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNitePQ I've always used the classic thin squeezable water bottle, but it doesn't keep water cold enough in the summer or warm enough in the winter, so I am looking at insulated bottles.

I've seen stainless steel (obviously not squeezable) and double-walled plastic bottles, but not sure which to choose.

What sort of insulated bike bottle do you like, and why?

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNitePQ My bike has hydraulic disc brakes. Last week I took off the front wheel and put it back on a day later and all was normal.

A few days later I did it again but when I put it back on my front brakes seemed extra grippy! It took very little pressure on the brake lever to activate the brakes.

Why might have happened?

Do you say "ride a bike" or "drive a bike"?

I've seen people use "drive a bike" which seems weird to me. Maybe I just think riding is mostly meant for things you are "on" where "driving" is mostly for things you are "inside of"... or riding involves balance maybe?

It's not 100% of course, but "driving my bike" just sounds weird to me.

@meganL @marktyndall For what it’s worth, I learned from a bike mechanic to check everyday and to let enough air out of the tires to require at least 3 to 4 full strokes before reaching your desired pressure. They said gauges, especially inexpensive ones are notoriously unreliable and that’s the only way to get a somewhat consistent pressure reading. #BikeTooter #bikenitepq

@ascentale @bikenite: A #BikeNitePQ: Have you ever permanently or for a longer time swapped bicycles or other HPV with someone?

This will be my first year commuting to work in the winter on an ebike. I know you can get neoprene covers to wrap around the bike where the battery is, with the idea to keep it warmer for better performance.

Does anyone use those battery covers? Do they actually work?

After ~50 years of trouble-free cycling, I seem to have recently become the sort of person who's prone to abscesses. My GP says it might just be a "phase" I'm going through. I think I'm doing the obvious right things.

Has anybody else been in that situation? What's worked for you, either for prevention or dealing with the problem once it occurs?
