  3. Something I've seen more of lately that drives me bonkers is reporting and comments that say that the social support system will collapse because the birthrate is falling therefore people MUST have more babies.

So instead of redesigning how we do social supports (and these systems could use a revamp anyway), we have to force "the right people" (because that's what's underneath all this) to have more kids.

For fuck's sake, talk back to this stuff!

  6. I'm not saying there are no natural advantages to uprights - there are. But there are advantages to recumbents as well and if UCI hadn't put its thumb on the scales, I think fewer dudes would be damaging themselves for years thinking the upright was the only way to cycle.

  7. Reading about a guy who had a prostate problem for years, finally had surgery, and has to wait weeks before he can get back on his upright bike and I cannot help but think that UCI has done the world a huge disfavor by retarding the progress of recumbent bicycles in the '30s and up to the present.

Lots of dudes torturing themselves, giving themselves problems with erectile dysfunction, RSIs, etc because hours in the standard upright configuration are tougher than a 'bent would be.

  8. An American Expat Shares His Experience of Surgery in Albania

Not sure where he was when his emergency happened, but it sounds like he went to a public Albanian hospital.

His experience sounds similar to the one I had in Pogradec with the different sanitation and my inability to speak Albanian at that level being a huge hindrance.

"Argollo accused the executive branch of issuing regulations that benefit certain powerful families, the business class, agribusiness, bankers and millionaires, while "for the people, nothing."...

The conflict expanded this week with the addition of urban and rural teachers, who suspended classes and called for marches and blockades to demand wage increases, more educational positions and labor improvements."

  17. I'm very fortunate that when I was tempted to boost a couple things today, the hesitation due to looking for alt text also made me realize I should be looking for source and

Not only did our own shitty habits re creative works make it easier for billionaires to steal creative works with no consequences, but the result of their theft - genAI - has made critical thinking that much more important. It's getting harder & harder to tell what's a crafted lie or not.

  18. Trying to be a better critical thinker is a constant work in progress. I'm happy that my desire to only boost things with alt text will make me look more carefully and it's THEN that I realize I was thinking about boosting video (or photo or illustration) that has no link to a source, no credits. It's almost always a case of cognitive bias that makes me consider this - it fits with an impression or opinion I have (not that I like the thing...just that I think it's highly plausible)

  20. Something I've noticed in person and from vlogs is that SO MANY cities put up these "I ❤️ <name of city>" sculptures. Does anyone know how many years ago these things saturated everywhere? Maybe it's just the Instagram-ification of it all, but it feels like hiring local artists to make something unique to one's city would be doing a better job of creating the cachet they may be seeking...

  21. It's a real tell when people who seemed normal before suddenly become hate accounts when events flip and make their buried hatred easier to market as "patriotism".

Best to beware of such people. You never know what hidden bigotry they've got that you're not seeing yet because they haven't yet gotten "permission" to trot it out. But it's there.

Doesn't show the many ableisms of UC Davis cycle infrastructure that UC Access Now worked to get the university to respond to.

    youtube.com/watch?v=RF22Az5_7S0

  28. @lopta @bobjonkman @ascentale @bikenite Yeah, the end ones are more accessible, but in my experience the abled folks take those first because they find them more convenient.

OTOH, these racks look to have better spacing than average (don't know for sure), and - really importantly - they're U racks sunk into concrete. So they're a more accessible shape and also more secure.

  29. This note on the Natural Science museum's page makes me wonder if it was needed because bike theft is high in Freiburg and therefore people bring their cycles inside, or whether it is because there's not enough sheltered accessible cycle parking at the museum.

  30. @kirk I think it's possible to come up with more accessible designs for lockers, but there's no financial incentive to do so when gov't and institutional decisionmakers keep approving and using taxpayer (including disabled cyclists') money on the ableist designs.

  31. @kirk They can be very helpful, but one problem with these (and other cycle infrastructure being designed, sited, and built now) is that they are only built with abled riders of upright cycles in mind, which is ableist. I would not be able to fit my ride in here.

Not trying to be a killjoy, but pointing out something abled folks/riders of upright non-cargo cycles tend not to notice. Which is why things like this keep getting designed this way and winning bids.

  32. @shojiwax Yup. I tried pointing out that shit in Davis and people have such low standards now they don't really care how many public resources the private sector is appropriating.

  33. If you live near Davis, California and need to sell your bike, trailer, or other cycle-related things and are overwhelmed with dealing with lowballers and timewasters, you can help an elementary school out by consigning it instead. Read the details.

If you're in the market for a used cycle, this is a great place to pick one up, especially if you ride recumbents. There's not as much competition to buy those so you get them for less $.
