Heute ein Treffen in #behringersmühle auf Kaffee und Kuchen. Wir waren 8 #velomobil e, 2 #recumbenttrike und 1 #liegerad.
Die B470 war im Rahmen des Marathons in der #fraenkischeschweiz gesperrt für Krafverkehr, so konnten wir mal die komplette Fahrbahn nutzen. Mit dabei waren unter anderem @radlpit und @s_masto . -
Ausfahrt zu einem Treffen im Kleinziegenfelder Tal, zusammen mit @radlpit und einer Freundin.
Es ging durch das #wiesenttal und #leinleitertal über #heiligenstadtinoberfranken nach #stadelhofen . -

The other day I posted a picture of just the frame for this trike as I was starting to build it. This is the completed beast which I've been riding for a few days now.
Super comfortable, 2 battery mounts (only one battery on this morning, but the idea is to be able to go a long ways or have the ability to do massive climbs without completely draining the charge), head and tail lights, 2 bottle holders, and a wireless charging phone mount (it was an option, I had to get it).
The motor kit is from Grin Technologies in Vancouver, and it's been injected with cooling fluid (which they call Statorade, lol!) to keep the temp. stable even on long climbs. (Hub motor overheating can be a real issue)
It will be interesting to see how long the brake pads last with the regenerative braking taking on the bulk of the load.
So far, so fun!

Registrations are now open for the next British Human Power Club race meet at Colchester Sports Park on the 9th of August. Nice smooth tarmac, good sightlines and sensible* corners make it the opposite of last weekend's twisty silliness at Hereford and Evesham. I'm also hoping that August means it won't be stupidly cold, like it was when we last went there in 2022 and I had to un-jam my chain with frozen fingers.

* For certain values of sensible: There's a steep embankment on the outside of the hairpin to keep things interesting if you overcook it.

Got to take a demo ride on this today. Very smooth ride even with suspension that was softer than would be called for with someone of my mass.
They're made in Serbia and are known for being good off-road recumbent trikes.

Note that due to the high entry fee and limited numbers the Derby Velodrome event is unofficial, and will not earn championship points. It's a rare opportunity to ride something other than a conventional track bike on an indoor velodrome.
After the popularity of the (narrow, twisty) track at Hereford, we're doing a double-bill with the similar track at Evesham. Should be good fun for the un-faired and multitrack riders.
And we've managed to secure exclusive use of the (eyewateringly expensive) Betteshanger Park track for a weekend in September. Not a full World Championships, but we hope that some riders from continental Europe will take the opportunity to come over to enjoy the track, which with its long swooping curves and good sight-lines is well suited to faster machines.

If we want to get people out of cars, esp gas cars, old guard macho ableist cycling culture has got to unlearn their ableism and other toxic crap.
If people want a covered bike/trike/quad with e-assist, you should be happy they are going car-light or car-free! Be supportive!

They didn't mention an URL for it, but there was an advanced prototype of the Carbike there and they said it was constantly busy on the test track...very popular.
I think we're seeing a rise of enclosed e-bike/trike/quad ideas in order to get folks out of cars, whether they see themselves as "bike people" or not. There's a segment of the population that really wants an all-weather, inexpensive e-vehicle.

The panelists are enthusing about the Cixi chainless system that GoLo and others are using. It allows you to pedal in reverse, which is definitely something trike and quad users need due to not having as tight a turning radius as short wheelbase bicycles.
EDIT: Also has automatic shifting and allows use of regenerative braking (if I understand correctly).

One thing that I've seen and also heard is that more recumbent trike manufacturers are adding handcycle options to their lines.
If this sticks, it's very good news for disabled riders who need it as the competition will likely bring prices lower. #Recumbent #Accessibility #Spezi2025

Since I still have to book my flight and there are no direct flights to Tirana, AL from where I am, maybe I should book to a city that has a large recumbent dealership?
Any Central European folks have suggestions of cities with flights to Albania that also have a large recumbent dealership nearby?

A couple of days passed before I remembered exactly where I'd carefully stored the old freewheel that I wanted to install on my new wheel.
The old freewheel is a Suntour which I rode around with briefly over 20 years ago before I replaced it with something else for some reason that I can no longer remember. I didn't throw this nice part away - it emigrated with us.
The name now belongs to a Taiwanese company, but the original Suntour was Japanese. They were very innovative and made high quality parts for reasonable prices. My freewheel is from the early 1990s. It's a quality part with replaceable sprockets (I remember bike shops having a choice of sprockets back in the day) and it has a quiet clutch mechanism. Nice. No tick tick tick when free-wheeling.
Suntour had their own indexed gearing system and in principle this isn't supposed to be compatible with Shimano's SIS, but with a bit of careful adjustment it's working more or correctly.
Of course I'm still going to take apart the freehub from the other wheel and see if I can fix that as well. It's nice to have a spare.

This afternoon's bike trip was a 37 km round trip in one hour and ten minutes to collect a 20 kg sack of "greensand" olivine for the garden.
I think it's a good example of the efficiency of velomobiles: how they make human power even more effective than when riding a normal bike. Even on the return journey with a headwind and loaded with the sack of sand, it was easy to keep the speed above 35 km/h.
Being able to stow a lot of things inside the aerodynamic form of the bike helps a lot with efficiency. You feel extra weight when accelerating, not so much once you get going.
And why the olivine ? I calculated a few weeks back that in the worst case this last winter our heating could have emitted 105 kg of CO2. This sack is enough to absorb about a fifth of that amount from the atmosphere.
Each time we plant things indoors or in our garden we add a bit of olivine.
Once humanity (especially those of us in the highly emitting richer countries) has reduced emissions by a lot, it's possible to make a bit of a dent by using a product like this. But there's no chance of compensating for ever larger emissions by trying to mine ever larger amounts of olivine.

I've been very slowly working toward turning my delta #trike (like the one in the pic but uglier) into 2WD (by default these are 1WD).
Got some parts in the mail today, will have to return them (two sprockets won't fit). And this sent me on another (about the 20th) deep dive looking for ideas for a rear differential.
Now I'm knee-deep in this project and seriously considering changing the entire plan.
Here's hoping these ebay merchants take returns without too much hassle.
