I've been working on a secret project this month. 20 years ago I lived in the UK and decided I had to go on one epic bike ride before leaving the country so in July 2006 I cycled from Land's End to John o'Groats - the length of the country from the furthest South-West point to the furthest North-East. The route that I took was just over 1700 km and it took ten days of cycling. It was fun, but also quite dangerous. A lot of those km were on A-roads, some of them on dual carriageways which are motorway standard except that they lack a safe hard shoulder to pull over onto. In all honesty, I can't really recommend it.

Anyway, the secret project this month was to ride the distance of LEJOG while doing all the usual things that I do each month. I decided on 1407 km as the target as that's the shortest possible LEJOG route. No need to push myself too hard this time.

I only thought of this idea in the second week of July. I'd made a good start with the 200 km ride that we did on the first Sunday of the month, but I'd also had a couple of relatively lazy days so I had fallen behind the ~45 km a day required to finish the distance in 31 days but not by much (I told you it'd be relatively relaxed).

The motor kit is from Grin Technologies in Vancouver, and it's been injected with cooling fluid (which they call Statorade, lol!) to keep the temp. stable even on long climbs. (Hub motor overheating can be a real issue)

It will be interesting to see how long the brake pads last with the regenerative braking taking on the bulk of the load.

Registrations are now open for the next British Human Power Club race meet at Colchester Sports Park on the 9th of August. Nice smooth tarmac, good sightlines and sensible* corners make it the opposite of last weekend's twisty silliness at Hereford and Evesham. I'm also hoping that August means it won't be stupidly cold, like it was when we last went there in 2022 and I had to un-jam my chain with frozen fingers.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite I meant a recumbent trike. Upright trikes don't have that issue. With upright trikes, esp delta trikes, the real issue is tight turns at speed possibly causing rollovers.

The high bottom bracket thing is common to all recumbents. If the bb is up high like that, each downstroke is actually turning the bike a bit.

That happens on upright bikes as well BUT the difference is that you're balancing on top of the bb so your body can lean one way or another to correct for it. That doesn't work when the bb is high. #BikeNite #Recumbent

Unfortunately, the #climateclassic cycle ride for today, which goes along the future Dutch sea front at 1 m altitude, was cancelled and/or shortened (depending on your start location). Why ? Because of the climate change that the ride tries to draw attention to !

The temperature and humidity were considered too high.

But we could still collect shirts at the start in Groningen so we were sort of committed to a minimum 60 km ride there and back, and we decided to follow the route all the way back to the furthest point from Groningen, before then riding to our respective homes.

Each person's total distance was different. For me it worked out as only 120 km instead of the expected 160 km total. It was indeed warm today and we rode at a relatively modest pace as a result. But very pleasant it was, with excellent company including @TheoZw and @twilwel

And there's some good news. Because it was cancelled for us this year, we have already paid the entrance fee for next year:

It is blowing and raining HARD out there and so far the cover on my trike is holding on. I didn't tie it as well as I could, but I did tie it. And the elasticized ends help. I sure hope it doesn't blow away.

The seats of recumbents are generally an ergonomic advantage, but they do catch a lot more rain and are harder to cover fully in a rainstorm. #BikeTooter #Recumbent

@ascentale @bikenite A8. This week was the week I finally got to ride the replacement recumbent. As my left knee is in a lot of pain and very tetchy, it couldn't have come soon enough. Life is much better with a ride.

The challenge is finding infrastructure that isn't ableist and/or car-centric. When places refuse to hold drivers accountable, we get infrastructure that is meant to keep drivers out, but also keeps disabled cyclists out. So we have to educate about these issues, and advocate for holding drivers accountable first & then when relying on barriers, make the barriers as accessible to all cyclists as possible.

But I'm very very happy to be riding again! #BikeNight #Recumbent #Albania

@ascentale @TicklishHoneyBee @bikenite A4. Finally replaced my recumbent (thanks to those who've helped...I'm far from paying down the debt from this so I'm still crowdfunding). A trike is new for me so while I've got recumbent experience, I'm having to learn how to adapt to the new configuration.

I bought a water bottle holder, but it's made for upright bike tube diameters. I may have to attach it to my seat back, but the mesh seat design I have doesn't allow for as much of that as the Haluzak Horizon did. I already put a lock holder there.

I have an after-market adapter for things, but it's at my feet so I can't put stuff there I need to access while riding. Currently, I'd like to find a phone/GoPro holder so I could more easily vlog my rides.

I *wish* I had an AirZound, which is my favorite for warning drivers. If I did, I'd have to modify the hose because it's designed for uprights with the reservoir meant for the bottle holder.

Am Montag gab es ein gemeinsames Treffen zum Mittagessen in Stadelhofen in der #fraenkischenschweiz . Zu 10 sind wir eingeflogen, bunte Mischung aus #velomobil en, #recumbenttrike und #liegerad .
Gestartet zu dritt über #forchheim , #ebermannstadt das Tal hinauf über #heiligenstadt auf den Nebenstraßen, zurück dann zu viert.
Es war herrlich, aber auch sehr heiß.
Kaffeestopp musste aber dennoch sein, frei nach @radlpit integraler Bestandteil und nicht verhandelbar, gut so!

I missed that you were talking about the BikeE! If we were in the US, it'd be little problem finding a used one on Craig's List or ebay to scavenge parts from.

It's worth asking for pointers during BikeNite to see if someone knows a source for parts. #BikeTooter #Recumbent

Vom Treffpunkt aus den Kanal entlang über #forchheim über #bamberg weiter Richtung #coburg .
Kurz vor Rattelsdorf an einem Weiher eine Pause mit #kaffee kochen und gemütlichem Schnack. Die Vespa war eher von Keksen etc. Geprägt.

Schön war´s wieder, das Wetter hat auch mitgespielt.

I think I knew about the Pony 4 when I was trying to decide on a quadricycle to buy, but I think perhaps the cost was an impediment at the time or maybe just getting it to the US during the pandemic supply line issues...

I took a test ride of one at #Spezi2026. Unfortunately, the boom wasn't adjusted well for me so I wasn't getting full extension of my legs. Still, it seems like a good quad and with Velove no longer selling to the public...
