Это третья статья серии о том, почему акустика, которая хорошо измеряется, может плохо звучать. В первой части мы выяснили, что АЧХ суммирует энергию не спрашивая, вовремя ли та пришла. Во второй — что комната добавляет к звуку копии и резонансы, и провели границу честности эквалайзера: ниже частоты Шрёдера он чинит физику, выше — только график. Сегодня отправимся в самые низкие частоты спектра, где пересекаются темы предыдущих статей. Бас — это частоты, на которых колонка ещё не закончилась, а комната уже началась, и где одно-единственное конструктивное решение — каким образом нагрузить динамик — определяет характер звука сильнее, чем всё остальное железо вместе взятое. После перестановки и наведения порядка в комнате моя система впервые за годы зазвучала собранно — и, как это всегда бывает, новая расстановка только подчеркнула фундаментальную недостачу. Описать словами мое разочарование весьма непросто, ведь там, где бас ещё оставался — у самой настройки порта, — с ним вдобавок было что-то не так. Если раньше баса было много, но он был абсолютной кашей, то теперь стало отчетливо слышно, как бочка ударника набирала вес, но теряла резкость удара: щелчок и тело ноты будто расходились во времени. Кривая АЧХ там, у частоты настройки, ничего дурного не показывала — а слух показывал; у меня уже было правило на этот случай, ещё с прошлых стараний: если график в порядке, а слух недоволен, надо смотреть на время .

Это вторая статья серии о том, почему акустика, которая хорошо измеряется, может плохо звучать. В первой части мы разобрали АЧХ — главный график индустрии — и его фундаментальное ограничение: измерение суммирует всю энергию в точке, не различая, что пришло вовремя, а что с опозданием или вовсе лишнее. Закончилась та история закономерно для инженера, который поверил, что дело в железе: я купил лучшую акустику, которую мог себе позволить, поставил на то же место — и звук остался плохим. Просто стал другим. Сегодня — о втором участнике любой стереосистемы. Он не указан в спецификациях, не продаётся в салонах и достаётся вам бесплатно вместе с квартирой.

Я занимаюсь разработкой, и как большинство людей с техническим складом ума, когда что‑то работает не так — ищу способ это починить. Желательно программно. Более десяти лет назад я серьёзно занялся звуком. Мои попытки получить хорошее качество воспроизведения в комнате заставили меня пройти длительный путь проб, ошибок и исследований. Выяснение того, где именно была проблема и почему всё оказалось сложнее, чем я надеялся, потребовало огромного количества времени. Эта серия статей — результат того расследования. Это не туториал по измерениям акустики: таких достаточно. Скорее разбор того, что в подобных туториалах обычно остаётся за кадром. Мы пойдём всё глубже: от того, что показывают стандартные метрики, к тому, что они скрывают, и к тому, что с этим реально делать. Начнём с самого очевидного инструмента — амплитудно‑частотной характеристики (АЧХ) .

I have seen people very excited about the fact that Apple have added an Equaliser to the forthcoming AirPods “”””””””””””””””””””Pro””””””””””””””””””””” (emphasis mine) firmware. But guys it’s a THREE band EQ. Three. bands.
That is literally no better than the old “Bass / Mids / Treble” tone controls on low end hi fi of yore.
I’d love to know the rationale that led to that decision. It’s certainly not even close to being a technical limitation - anybody who knows the capabilities of the H2 etc chipsets that power the current crop of Pods knows that they could probably piss a 64 band linear phase EQ (quantum hardened natch) and twelve convolution reverbs. But seriously they are already EQing probably at multiple stages in the audio path (not to mention they also have the power of the main device at their disposal). And they SHO AIN’T limiting themselves to 3 bands. Even the built in EQ presets available in the Music.app System Settings are known to be at least 8 bands - probably 10 actually like the iTunes EQ.
ANYWAY so yeah it’s not a technical limitation; if they believe it’s a cognitive limitation on their p̶r̶i̶s̶o̶n̶e̶r̶s̶ customers’ part then that is … bad; what else could be the reason?
Seriously it’s worse than nothing, almost. As long as you only want to attenuate one of the bands you’re fine but they’re too wide to really do anything more complex than one band, or maybe bass and high but not mids.
Is it that they really think people are too stupid to handle any more than 3 bands? Graphic EQs are among the most intuitive audio tech there is. You move the thing up or down and a certain audio range is affected.
*tin foil hat replaced* maybe they’re trying to hide something… something that us m̶u̶g̶s̶ users having access to a more accurate EQ that maybe will be implemented on the H2 chip would reveal….? I’m choosing to believe this as it is the least evidenced, most paranoid option.
Just put a decent EQ that runs on the phone and stop bloody pissing about, you have bigger fish to fry ! #airpods #eq #beta
