Gave #matrix a try. Installed #synapse, #elementweb, #cinny on my RPi, and #fluffychat on mobile. SNI proxy on a VPS routes traffic to the home server to keep secret keys secret (yep, HTTPS everywhere makes no sense if everyone keeps their secrets in cloud)
What a bloatware! It's lame and messy. I'm afraid to show it to normies who I want to communicate with me.

- Don't remember all the specs but I know it's got 2 gig of ram and 80 gig storage. 4?... cores?
- Hosting #Matrix (#Synapse and #ElementWeb) and #Nextcloud on a #Yunohost base. Looking to add a #Mastodon / #Pleroma / something similar instance.
- 5 users.
- Runs nicely. Nextcloud can be a bit slow sometimes, but that's Nextcloud on pretty much any hardware. -
This room change messages look so spammy. Can I hide these messages?

I can see the rooms by visiting the roooms' public URLs. Mann this sucks.
I guess I'll use one of the rooms as a landing page that lists all the rooms in the space.

Some of the rooms in my space showed up in the suggested room section, but not all rooms, which is unfortunate.
Do I treat the matrix space as a Discord server?

How do I set my public Element space to preview the rooms as a guest?
I opened my space in incognito to sign in as a guest, and the space did not list the rooms.

Can I ask, as someone also running @matrix / Synapse / Element Web via @yunohost , do you run into many problems with video calls? I'm constantly having issues with calls not connecting, or more often not having sound on one or both sides. I'm not sure though if it has anything to do with the other party I usually call having a super old apple phone while I use Element for Android or Element Web.

Matrix certrainly has its rough edges, but I find it awesome that pretty much every major Linux community now has their dedicated space. All federated, of course.

Nachdem ich eine ziemliche Odysee hinter mir habe, Matrix als Docker Umgebung lauffähig zu installieren - und damit ja alles andere als allein bin, da die Matrix-Dokumentation und diverse Anleitungen so la la sind (weil nicht mehr aktuell oder sie setzen Wissen zwischen den Zeilen voraus) - habe ich, wie versprochen, meine funktionierene Docker-Konfiguration Schritt für Schritt dokumentiert.
Das Ganze setzt auf einen debian-basierten Server mit Docker, Docker-Compose und Apache-Webserver

Pubblico anche qui perché, perché no… Scocciandomi del fatto che non ci sia un #client #Matrix per #mobile che sia ben curato a tutto tondo, sia stabile che performante che ricco di funzioni, ed essendo fissati quelli di #Element con il non ottimizzare la versione #web #flagship del loro client (che è progettato solo per #desktop)… ho forkato appunto #ElementWeb, e ora vedrò cosa posso fare per mantenerlo, ma portandolo in una direzione più consona ai dispositivi mobili. 📱️
Qui 2 #screenshot dimostrative, per mostrare come appare la versione originale di questa #applicazione su un viewport (su browser desktop) molto stretto (a sinistra in entrambe), a confronto con il mio #fork che gira sul mio #telefono in verticale (sulla destra). Per creare veramente un’esperienza ideale servirà temo abbastanza #lavoro, ma in 2 #giorni scarsi ho già quantomeno reso la #app agibile su #smartphone, finalmente! ⚒️

My initial impression of #ElementX is a good one. And on this journey I figured out how to fix the emoijs on #ElementWeb. I much prefer system emojis everywhere.
I might start pulling other people along. My #Matrix exploration has been quite lonely so far.

I have #Element installed on everything, so I don't usually use #ElementWeb. Of course I've installed in on all my Matrix-servers, but that's solely as a service for those poor souls who don't have their own Element yet.
Unfortunately, it turns out that all my ElementWeb installs have somehow failed: after providing a username and password, all you'll ever get is an eternal spinner and the message "signing in..." Nothing happens after that, I don't see any errors logged.
And that's on 3 of my servers, so the error must be mine. Apparently this doesn't seem to be something that the whole world suffers from, or all those posts about it have been professionally hidden from my view. Or I'm pretty bad at searching, also plausible 😉
Does anyone recognise this? I'm sure it must be something simple...

I used @yunohost to install #Synapse and #ElementWeb for #Matrix, which by default install #Coturn, but it's been pretty shaky for video calls.
Issues are mainly with one person calling from #Element on a slightly older #iPhone. About 2/3 of the time, the call doesn't ring on one side, or connects without sound, or doesn't connect at all.
Any idea what community would make sense to troubleshoot this with? #Yunohost? Synapse? #Element? Coturn? Hard to know where to even start... 🤔

@Blase Love the idea of #Dendrite / #Conduit. My #Matrix instance is for my family, including some fairly low-tech family members, so reliability is the number 1 concern. If it breaks I may never get them back from #Facebook Messenger / #Skype etc.
I'm assuming that Synapse would be the most reliable as it seems to be the most developed...
That said, #Element video calls with my mother rarely seem to work, unless I use #ElementWeb instead of #ElementAndroid.

@matrix Does the ability to hide your read receipts exist yet? MSC2285 and Synapse pull request 10413 ( https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse/pull/10413 ) seem to suggest so, but they were merged for synapse v 1.40.0 and I still don't see a way of doing it in Synapse 1.59.7... Is it just that #ElementWeb and other clients don't have a configuration option for this yet, or am I missing something?

Auf entspannt mal eben Fix #ElementWeb aufgesetzt. Hätte ich mir doch etwas komplizierter vorgestellt.

Habe übrigens neulich mal eine #Matrix-Instanz für den persönlichen Gebrauch aufgesetzt (praktisch #Synapse + #ElementWeb + ein Einladungsformular für Bekannte und Familie, falls es so weit kommen sollte)
Läuft so weit und eine Aktualisierung auch schon erfolgreich durch und super zufrieden soweit, aber was mir echt auf die Nerven geht, sind die ganzen Integrationen von Drittquellen in dem Matrix-Setup mit Synapse & Element.
