Upcycling: Old Mattress to Cat-Bed

Two years ago, i got a new (and better) mattress, my old one was one of those cheaper latex foam mattresses from Ikea. I didn´t want to throw it away, because i thought i still could use it for something, but for a long time, didn´t know for what. Until this summer. I had the idea to make it into a cat bed. After some measuring and a little bit of math, i went for it.

I wanted to use as much as possible, (that´s why the cat bed got a bit huge in the end), even the mattress cover and the handles. I even saved the really long zip, because you never know, when you need something like that. My first plan was to use the mattress cover as, well as cover and then make some kind of patchwork cover/slip on top of that. (After sewing the cover it changed, because those corners weren´t fun at all.

I neede a bottom piece, two side pieces and one back piece. The three pieces are sitting on top of the bottom piece. I tried to cut the foam with a stanley knife ( i don´t know if this term is used in other countries), but couldn´t cut it at all. So i just used an old scissors. It got a bit wonky and crooked, but in the end it was fine.

I cut the bottom piece 70 cm x 100 cm x 14, the two side pieces and the back piece were the same size 70 cm x 15 cm x 14 cm. (The mattress was 200 cm x 140 cm x 14 cm.)

I glued everything together with a very cheap textile glue, and it worked absolutely fine with this kind of foam. It just had to sit and dry for a few days. ( I just applied the glue with a brush.)

As you can see in the background, i could easily make another cat bed. But i only have a few scraps left over from the cover, so i need some other material.

Then i measured all the pieces i needed to cut from the mattress cover. The best tip i can give you, write what piece it is on the wrong side of it (like bottom piece or side piece), plus how much seam allowance you cut on.
Another good tip, draw an “overview” on a sheet of paper, like which piece should be sewn first to another piece and so on. This helps you a lot. What was still quite hard to sew, were the corners, but i managed in the end.

That´s why i decided not to sew a patchwork cover.

The end result doesn´t look very professional and perfect, but i´m happy with it and my cat is also very happy with it.

To easily remove the cover for washing, i closed it in the back with some velcro.

Mal ganz ehrlich: Chinesische Produkte sind einfach nur Schrott, bei #Elektrik und #Elektronik ist es #Elektroschrott im Neuzustand. #China kann nur günstig nach Vorgabe produzieren, aber keine funktionierenden Produkte selbst entwickeln.

Beispiel gefällig?
Ein (vermeintlich) simples #Firmware #Update bei einem #Wechselrichter von #Goodwe zu machen, ist ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit:

erwähnt mit keinem Wort, dass man den Wechselrichter dazu erst zerlegen und andere Teile einbauen muss (eigenen Bluetooth-Dongle) 🤷🤦🤡🤮
→ weiß ich jetzt erst nach Monaten des hin und her)

Daher zähneknirschend (Zugriff von Chinesen in mein Heimnetz) ein #Fernupdate beauftragt

leider konnte das Update bislang nicht erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden.
 Bitte prüfen Sie auch die Portfreigabe für den Port 20001 (TCP). Diesen Port nutzen wir für die Kommunikation mit dem Server.
Führen Sie bitte ebenfalls einen Neustart durch und stellen Sie sicher, dass die Internetverbindung korrekt eingerichtet ist.
