  2. Eighteen months into my #careerBreak, the future of #work, for me, looks more like #volunteering. Finding constructive work with a group of like-minded people, even for no money, feels good.

  3. After a ten year career in product management I made the big pivot back into the development leadership track, and you know what? I’m having the most fun I've had in a long time!

  4. For nearly a year, I've been watching with quiet captivation as the tech world seeks "efficiency" with #AI. Are we in a #bubble? Yes. Will good AI products outlast it? Definitely.

  5. As my #careerBreak enters its ninth month, the working world has never seemed more alien to me. I'll need more introspection, more training, and more adjustment before even beginning to seriously pursue a new job.

  6. Six months into my #careerBreak, neither boredom nor exhaustion are setting in. I'm having a great time away from work, balancing commitments with relaxation and introspection.

  7. This is probably the most #coding I’ve done since starting my #careerBreak almost 4 months ago, and I did so via #raspberryPiConnect on an iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard. Didn’t work great; Safari kept interrupting the connection in the tab that had my remote terminal session.

  8. Three months into my #careerBreak, I’m deprogramming from work and keeping my body and mind busy as I learn new skills. So far, feeling good.

  9. Yup, it happened. Over nineteen months and two eclipses later and the career break is officially behind me. I still can’t believe that time came and went so quickly, but I can say honestly that I’m excited to start something new.

  10. During my #careerBreak, to make up for the lack of a regular paycheck, I’ve been building a fixed-income redemption ladder, using CDs and bonds. So far, the stability has been worth the slight time investment.

  11. In the first month of my #careerBreak, I'm learning that "decumulating" my net worth is okay. Saving money makes that possible, but saving money is not the goal.

  12. I quit my job at AWS, and I don't have another one lined up. Time for a #careerBreak, my first time in decades with more than a month between commitments. Here's to a happier and healthier future.

  13. As I'm easing into a proper #JobSearch, one of the most demoralizing things I'm seeing on places like LinkedIn is folks, currently unemployed and searching for work, trying to build a "brand". I'm not talking organic posts built on slow thought and inspiration, but forced writing that has content mill vibes.

After over a year long #CareerBreak, seeing this, all I can think is: dear god I don't have it in me to become a business bro influencer, and if that's what it takes, I'm in trouble...

  14. As I continue the process of learning to drive, and now need to start hunting for a new job, some thoughts on failure.

  15. Somehow, despite running a blog (sometimes quite intermittently) for the past twenty years, I never knew August 31st was World Blog Day. So it seemed as good a day as any to finally write a long-overdue post looking back on this break I’ve been on, and looking forward to what comes next.

  16. Well, six of twenty hours of manual driving lessons done (plus a bit of in-between practice) and the instructor has only had to use the “uhoh” break once, and only because I almost blew through a yield sign that was hidden behind a tree. Progress!

  17. If I’m asked what I accomplished on my break, the first thing I’ll list is using my iFixit kit to repair the shoulder buttons on my old Nintendo DS Lite (easy repair, corroded contacts in the micro switches). Why? Because it was there.

  18. So I’ve been plugging away at a little side project for kicks. I haven’t written code for a month, now, due to other issues and distractions but I have been _thinking_ about it, and it occurs to me how novel that is: without the pressure of deadlines I can actually spend time thinking about the problem, ensuring I build the right thing first, without the pressure to deliver the fast wrong answer.

  19. Three months into my career break and a couple of observations: 1) I thought I might eventually get bored. I absolutely have not. 2) Time flies. Fast. 3) I was concerned about becoming disconnected from people but in some ways the opposite is true as I’m so much more flexible that I can meet people where/when they are. 4) I am absolutely not ready to go back to work yet…

  20. Last day of #work before the start of my #careerbreak and Valve announces the Steam Summer Sale. It's like it was meant to be! #gaming

  21. Gotta admit I feel like the universe is telling me something when, on nearly the same day as my last day at work and the start of my #careerbreak, #reddit is effectively killing third party apps, including #rif, which I have used to kill far too much of my free time...

  22. After 21 years in my job at INVIDI I realized I needed a change, and in that moment of change, some space to reflect. #work #careerbreak #prodmgmt: b-ark.ca/2023/06/01/turning-th
