  19. En el estado norteamericano de Illinois se encuentran los restos de Cahokia, un yacimiento arqueológico amerindio que fue una importante ciudad precolombina. Su historia se remonta al siglo VIII, o al menos eso sugieren los restos encontrados. Sus habitantes cultivaban maíz y trabajaban el cobre, y no fue hasta mediados del siglo X cuando se fundó el asentamiento de Cahokia, que atrajo a muchas personas de los alrededores, lo que lo convirtió en un importante centro de comercio. La ciudad estaba amurallada, y los edificios importantes estaban protegidos detrás de sus muros. Su declive llegó entre los años 1200 y 1400, cuando la población comenzó a abandonarlo, se piensa que por la sequía o por conflictos políticos. Protegidas por la UNESCO, sus pirámides verdes en los alrededores de la ciudad de San Luís esconden para siempre los misterios de la mayor civilización al norte del río Grande. Al más grande se le conoce como el Túmulo del Monje, y mide nada menos que 30,5 metros, sobre una base de 316 metros. Sin duda, fue un edificio importante.
