In 79 AD, the #ancient #city of #Herculaneum was #overwhelmed and #buried by multiple #pyroclasticflows resulting from a devastating #eruption of Mount #Vesuvius. The city's everyday environment was abruptly #encased in #solidrock, allowing #organicmaterials to be #preserved better than in #Pompeii. These include the #Herculaneumpapyri (see ref).
