Selbstreferentielles Pathos

Bei Wenders bin ich immer eingeschlafen – Frau Kinski nackt gabs im Tatort, oder?

In meiner WG (1977-1998) gab es einen Wenders-Fan. Wenn der sich an der TV-Fernbedienung durchsetzte, war für mich das Einschlafen in der gemütlichen Sperrmüll-Sitzgarnitur in unserem auch im Hochsommer gut gekühlten TV-Keller nicht zu verhindern. Für WMs und EMs ging ich in die Kneipe. Eine Frau Kinski nackt habe ich in irgendeinem Herrenmagazin als Jugendlicher gesehen, es war aber wohl eine Stiefmutter von Nastassja. Die Familie war offenbar sehr exhibitionistisch orientiert. Sie hatten wohl nichts anderes gelernt und brauchten das Geld. Und eine Hauptrolle im damals schon erfolgreichen Strassenfeger “Tatort” half gewiss aus dem Gröbsten raus.

Diesen Tatort habe ich jedenfalls bei vollem Bewusstsein gesehen. Er war nicht von Wenders, sondern von Petersen (1977). Ob Frau Kinski da nackt oder nur halbnackt war, habe ich vergessen. Von Herrn Wenders habe ich ansonsten nur “Buena Vista Social Club” gesehen (und auf LP gehört). Fand ich gut. Der Rest interessierte mich nicht.

Nun ist der Kerl 80 und bekam eine Ehrung. Und die erzeugte ein Rauschen im selbstreferentiellen Medienwald. Davon wiederum fühlt sich ein Mann verfolgt, der von Kino mehr Ahnung hat als ich, von Politik aber weniger. Herr Suchsland hatte schon bei der Berlinale als Weimer-Adjudant einen spektakulären politischen Verkehrsunfall verursacht. Nun fühlt er sich offenbar in ähnlicher Weise vom “Wokismus” verfolgt. Wenn wir diesen rechten Tarnbegriff mal zur Seite legen, sind es erwachsen gewordene Frauen, die ihm Angst machen.

Als Kino-Fachmann hat er u.a. auch gewichtige Argumente. An der Stelle musste ich dann aber laut loslachen: “In einer Demokratie ist nur ein Standpunkt möglich: Die Kunst ist frei und muss es bleiben. Der Kunst ist fast alles erlaubt. Der Künstler entscheidet. Sonst niemand. Er entscheidet allein nach seinen persönlichen Maßstäben.”

“Cancel Cuture” aus dem wahren Leben des Kapitals

Von materialistischer Analyse real existierender Produktionsverhälnisse will der sich feurig gebende Mann sich nicht irritieren lassen. Darum hier ein kleines Beispiel von “Cancel Culture” aus dem wahren Leben.

Kürzlich bestaunte ich den niederländischen Action-Film “Gangstas 4 Life” in der Mediathek. Nur für Erwachsene, wg. Sex&Crime (mehr Crime als Sex für meinen Geschmack). Ein harter Männerfilm der Herren Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Warum sie der ambitionierten Nora Gharib keinen stärkeren über eine reine Opferrolle hinausweisenden Part ins Männerdrehbuch schrieben, blieb mir beim Anschauen rätselhaft.

Offenbar beeindruckt von ihrem niederländischen Medienwirken lockte sie Hollywood (Warner Brothers, das sind die, die jetzt von Trump-Buddys gefressen wurden) über den Teich, um ihnen einen “Batgirl”-Blockbuster zu fabrizieren. Doch das Werk gefiel nicht. Und kommt nicht. Zu geringe – oder gar keine – Profiterwartung. Dä. Zwei Ikarusse in Hollywood abgestürzt, die Männer-Künstler mit marokkanisch-niederländischem Migrationshintergrund haben das nicht entschieden.

Suchsland hätte durchaus schreiben dürfen, er weiss es mutmasslich besser als ich, unter welchen Produktionsverhältnissen der sog. “Neue Deutsche Film” – mit seinen von ihm richtig erwähnten starken Frauen – in den 60ern und 70ern entstehen konnte. Nicht nur, weil seine Protagonist*inn*en durchaus angemessenen Lärm um sich selbst gemacht haben. Sondern auch, weil das kapitalgebende Grosskapital sich billig zu bespielende Marktnischen ausrechnete, nebst dem Auffressen zeitgemässer kreativer Potenziale. In kaum einer Branche arbeite(te)n so viele unbezahlte Praktikant*inn*en, wie beim Ruhm und Ehre versprechenden Filmproduzieren. So gelang dem Kapital beides: das Ausrechnen und das Fressen. Und ist nicht nur lange her, sondern auch weitgehend politisch erledigt.

Der klügste der damaligen Akteur*inn*e*n, Alexander Kluge, wechselte zum subversiven Fernsehmachen. Das hat er gut gemacht. Er war nicht nur klug, sondern auch klug beraten. Nur ist er leider tot.

Und was noch nicht erledigt ist, erledigen jetzt die öffentlichen Anstalten.

Damals lief der Film im Eulenspiegel, auf der Steeler Straße. Nach der Vorstellung konnten wir draußen auf dem Bordstein sitzen, rauchen und schweigen. Kein Mensch kam raus und sagte: „War ganz okay.“ Alle waren berauscht. Weil alle wussten: Wir waren gerade Zeugen geworden. Nicht von einem Film. Sondern von etwas Echtem. (ARTE)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 461 on The List, submitted by dharmadischarge. This is one of three albums to come out of the studio sessions of a Havana-based project that brought 20-some mostly retired and local musicians together to celebrate Cuban music, with this release highlighting son cubano, bolero, descarga, danzón, guajira, and criolla. This is essentially the only studio album put out by the collective under this name, but it became a worldwide sensation.

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 461 on The List, submitted by dharmadischarge. Here’s a quick rundown:

• Point of origin(s): In 1996, a Havana-based project headed by British music producer and World Circuit record label executive Nick Gold was meant to result in a collaboration between Cuban and African musicians, plus American guitarist Ry Cooder.(1) In the end, the musicians from Africa were unable to make it to Havana, and instead three albums of Cuban music resulted from the ensemble of mostly local musicians, all released the following year: A Toda Cuba le Gusta, the first album under the collective name Afro-Cuban All Stars (led by Juan de Marcos González); Introducing… Rubén González, highlighting the ensemble’s fantastic piano player; and, the album we look at here, the first and only studio album under the collective name Buena Vista Social Club, named after the music venue in Havana that was popular in the 1940s. The lineups aren’t exactly the same across all three recordings, but on this album is: Luis Barzaga, Julio Alberto Fernández Colina, Ibrahim Ferrer, Carlos González, Juan de Marcos González, Rubén González, Manuel “Puntillita” Licea, Orlando “Cachaíto” López, Manuel “Guajiro” Mirabal, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo, Salvador Repilado Labrada, Julienne Oviedo Sánchez, Compay Segundo, Benito Suárez, Barbarito Torres, Alberto “Virgilio” Valdés, Lázaro Villa, and Ry Cooder and his son Joachim Cooder.

• Standout track: The first track “Chan Chan” is such a great vibe-setter so I’ll go with that, but also “Pueblo Nuevo”, one of the tracks that is primarily Rubén González on piano. Oh and, given our series title here, the self-titled track.
• Where are they now?/RIP: While this is the only studio album put out by the collective, the immediate, explosive success of this album made “Buena Vista Social Club” into essentially a brand name for the collective members who went on to release solo projects (indeed, the official website uses ™ behind the name). But, as many of the musicians had already retired long before making this album and had been “in their prime” in the 1940s and 50s – one member, Compay Segundo, was just shy of his 90th birthday in the recording sessions! – it’s likely no surprise that at least a handful of the musicians have since left us, some not too long after the release of this album, including Licea in 2000, Segundo and R. González in 2003, Ferrer in 2005, and López in 2009.
  There’s a LOT to dig into around this collective and the overall impact/importance of this album on the world’s interest in Cuban and Latin American music. A good place to start might be Wim Wenders’ 1999 documentary of the same name.
