"Guantanamera" (pronounced [ɡwantanaˈmeɾa]; #Spanish for 'The woman from #Guantánamo') is a #Cuban patriotic song with lyrics from a poem by the Cuban poet #JoséMartí. It is an expression of love for Cuba and of solidarity with the poor people of the world. The official writing credits have been given to #JoseítoFernández, who first popularized the song on radio as early as 1929 (although it is unclear when the first release as a record occurred). CHICAGO – An audience of over 100 workers, union activists, and organizers from more than a dozen unions attended a reception here for representatives of the Cuban Embassy in Washington. The event – sponsored by Building Relations with #Cuban #Labor (BRWCL) – was part of the annual #LaborNotes conference from June 12-14, that brought together 4,700 #union activists and organizers from across the country, and several delegations from other nations. Tanieris Diéguez, deputy head of the Cuban mission to the #UN, spoke of the impact of the U.S. blockade on the lives of the Cuban people. She emphasized that Cuba is a “country of peace” and is open to talk about cooperation with the #US, but only on the basis of respect for #Cuba’s national sovereignty. However, she added, we will “fight to defend our honor” against all acts of #US aggression.

Cuban #medical workers have served on international cooperation missions in more than 150 countries since the 1960s.

During Covid, a #Cuban medical brigade helped #Italians in Lombardy, which triggered #Calabria’s president Roberto Occhiuto to reach out to Cuba in 2022 to invite hundreds of #doctors to his region. Calabria is one of the poorest regions in Italy and its #healthcare has suffered greatly from staffing and other issues.

“Cuba will always be in my heart,” says an elderly Italian man whose life was saved by a Cuban doctor.
