  1. Options, Diminishing

This week, after several weeks of disturbing and difficult weeks, I saw a brand-new call to boycott another option for getting books out to readers. Calling for a boycott on Amazon is nothing new, but this latest call was to boycott Barnes & Noble. I read the article in question and I'm left wondering if all of the places that are out there are boycotted, what exactly is left? this is NOT how you will get rid of Trump and the fascists you have put in power.

  22. I think what is often misunderstood about boycotts is that it's not about personal virtue or needing to avoid everything unethical. It's about doing strategic damage to the worst bad actors. An effective boycott that manages to financially damage an especially big and bad bad actor also sends a message to the others that they could be next. Boycotts need to be limited to something that is discretionary or has alternatives for a large number of people. It's also fair to say that not all avoidance is a boycott.

For example, I have avoided the Amazon store  for so long that I don't think that I could really be counted as someone boycotting Amazon, even though I avoid them primarily for ethical reasons. At the same time, I do think that a permanent boycott can make sense in certain scenarios. One reason why I don't think my Amazon avoidance counts as a boycott is that I have such a laundry list of issues with them that even if they addressed one issue I can't see myself returning to them unless I literally had no other choice.

In contrast boycotts are focused on one issue. So it does make sense to permanently boycott a company if, due to the nature of the company, they are never going to stop the unethical behavior being boycotted. In order to boycott a company, a person does have to at least need or want a service that company provides, though. Either the person stops buying from the company, or if they haven't bought from it before, actively and consciously avoids it in favor of alternatives when the occasion arises that they have a need that company could fulfill. If you've never bought anything from Widgets Inc because they have nothing to sell that you need or want, then you are not boycotting them even if you also have ethical issues with them. In contrast, if someone who has never bought from Widgets decides to avoid them for a specific reason and then avoids future purchases from them to instead purchase the same or similar kind of widgets from Alternative Widget Co, then that person can be said to be  boycotting Widgets Inc.

A lot of boycotts are temporary, though. In this case, the goal is simply to make the company stop the targeted behavior, not to make them 'good'.

Boycotts are one tool in political activism that can be effective if used properly. But to do that, we have to understand how to use them and what purposes they are meant to achieve.
